Never been off trial island yet, but think i'm going to cancel my sub to this game. Love many things about it, but rarely get into playing without some sort of bug or quest complication happening to jar me from the otherwise awesome experience. And by quest complication, I specifically mean either a bug, or as in the last crafting quest, following instructions to a tee only to realize the instructions of the quest are incorrect. (primarily stating to craft one of a certain item and place in one of several spots. One, being stated singularly and clearly, only to find a long while afterwards of running around and dying that I need 7 or 8 crafted, then they have to be the exact same quality.)
This is indicative of an unfinished game. And i'm not knocking Vanguard. I really want to love this game because it has so much more to offer than the rest. I've only heard once someone leaves trial island it gets a tad worse concerning bugs. So now i'm having buyer's remorse. Anyone care to talk me down from the ledge? Are the quests just poorly written and misleading sometimes, but fun if I stay open minded and don't read things too carefully? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

It's a shame you couldn't get into the game...but if you're having troubles, there's no sense in paying a monthly fee when you're truly not enjoying the game. If you do cancel, I would send what you wrote above directly to SOE. Not that they'll do anything about it, but they should know why you and many many others have left VG.
With all of that said, VG does offer a lot once you're off of the island. Bugs are present throughout the game but there are some fun quest as well as great dungeons and a huge world to explore with more content than you'll experience in the majority of mmo's on the market today.
SOE has let me down twice now. First with SWG (no need to go into that now) and now with VG as they have stopped updating the game. Despite this, I'll be looking forward to seeing what they do with Everquest Next. To quote our former president, George Bush:
"There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again"
It is quite strange. I can count on one of my hands how many bugs regarding quests i have found in the last 4 weeks since i subbed for VG.
Maybe we are not playing the same game? Or maybe my tolerance is above average after Darkfall and Mortal online?
Vanguard is truely not an AA MMO. It should be, but as most players don't like this type of gameplay nowadays it will never be a true AA. On another note: Shame that most old-school MMO players avoid Vanguard too, even if this is THE game for them. Im sure there are about 500k++ old school MMO players on the market at the moment only 1000 of them plays vanguard. Why all the posts on the forums for a "new" old school MMO when we have one, is a mystery for me.
Anyways, the above thing is a different story, back to topic: If you want polish, then Telon is not for you, its true. Rift i would say is better then. If you want adventure, keep your sub up. You will see what i mean. Be social, speak with players, try to get/organize groups. You will soon experience what is an MMORPG.
Wish you luck with the decision.
Last night I went back, and had some more difficulties, but nothing major. The community on this game though is too good for me to quit. I'm going to adjust is all. there's a certain grammer that mmorpgs seem to have, and Vanguard sometimes uses bad grammer in some parts. Doesn't mean it's a bad game at all. After trying out so many mmorpgs in a short amount of time, I've realized that a good community is far more important to me than being streamilned, and perfect. (Although Vanguard is not that bad, there's just a learning curve) Even after my original post, people are responding in nice ways, and being helpful without assuming anything. Thanks for the remarks. I've joined a guild now and they are helpful and friendly. No sarcasm. No snarkiness. Just really cool people.
Good to have ya around .
The thing with Vanguard is as you mentioned, you must have an extremely high tolerance for dealing with bugs and glitches to enjoy the game. I've bought multiple copies of VG for friends to get them off the trial isle and into the heart of the game so they can see the housing, real dungeons and group content. Everyone of my friends who tried it, loved it, but they refused to deal with all the bugs and glitches.
After playing polished games like Aion, WoW or Rift, I cannot blame anyone for not wanting to give SOE money to not fix bugs that have been in since early beta. VG turned 4 years old last month and still havent released a new expansion. That should have been 4 years worth of bug fixes, class balancing and the minor content updates they release. Sadly I can find more bugs on the trial isle (a single zone) than I experienced in the entire Cataclysm expansion.
Our VG guild moved to Rift. Not alone in that... come on over
But despite this, VG still has a lot going for it which speaks volumes of its strength as a true MMORPG with depth and content. It took the top raiding guild 4 years to finally get the content on farm status. Despite the neglect by its owner there is PLENTY to keep a new player occupied.
As for going to Rift like another poster suggested.... Well if you like the type of game Vanguard is, then you'll be sick of Rift inside of a month if not sooner. For me Rift was like going from living free and exploring the great outdoors to moving into a basement with no sunlight and no fresh air.
It has been VERY long since i played VG,but i do remember a problem with a certain crafting quest.I am not really sure i would call it a bug however, maybe misleading information is more accurate.
I will also say, that bugs were VERY few when i played at launch, the only two bugs i encountered were falling through the world 2x and got stuck once, but there was a command to get unstuck. So really i would not quit based on bugs at all,and yes i agree the game has more to offer than most especially quality of graphics/textures and game play.
My reasons were one of cheating and lack of players.I was in the early rush to compete in the crafting wars/sales and obvious cheating ruined that experience.I also did not like the aggro mechanics, but aside from my fave game FFXI,i do not think aggro meachnics in ANY of the other games are done any good at all.
So really i found very little wrong with Vanguard,i just like FFXI better, VG would be one of my top 5 games of all time for sure.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Heh, so very true. VG gives you options...presents opportunities to explore. I was disapointed in Rift. It's not a game I go for these days. As far as VG's community...for the most part, they are a mature and helpful bunch. I have enjoyed my time playing Vanguard over the past few years. Glad to see the OP decided to give it a shot. I think you'll enjoy the game! Have fun!
DON'T CANCEL....
Just switch it over to Everquest. These two time-locked server's are pheenominal. Alot of phun, great curtesy and a 2 week old brand new server.. (original content only). Kunark will be UNLOCKED at a later time, to simulate what it was like to play EQ back when it was released.
Many of the wow'refugee's have fallen in love with original everquest... some /ooc chennels are them praising the game.
Go relive it bro... phun as hell...

I can honestly say that Vanguard is my 2nd favorite MMO that I have ever played. The only reason I left was because my first MMO love called me back about a year ago, and that was Everquest. Still, I miss Vanguard at times.
For me the problem with Vanguard was the launch. I played it at launch, and enjoyed it until I started crafting. Which while intresting was just more frustrating that it was fun, and by that I mean it was just frustrating and no fun at all. Then there was the monster issues with the patches. One minute you would be hunting say, crocodiles and being able to handle two or three at a time. The next, you got, Server coming down for a quick patch. When the server came back up, the same monster would pretty much three shot you, and it would be just one of them.
For many old school gamers, this was the moment we gave up on Vanguard. It was a constant balancing sea saw in everything, every patch. One patch a mod was or recipy was to easy, the next it was insanly to hard. In a matter of days many players had, had enough.
