A few questions...

SlickShoesSlickShoes Member UncommonPosts: 1,019

Hi,

I managed to try the beta for a short time but my computer really was not up to it, I am buying this game once my new computer arrives later this week but as i dont have an active account i cant ask any questions on the official forums yet!

1: Is there a Ranger like play style, not like hunter from WoW, one that uses bows and ranged attacks but does NOT have a pet?

2:Is levelling as a tank(preferably paladin) horribly slow or pretty do able? I enjoy playing tanks but dont really want to level as a tank if im going to be killing and 1/4 the speed of everyone else. I am aware tanks will probably always level a bit slower and can live with that but not horribly slow.

Thats pretty much it, everything else about the game seems straight forward enough just wondered about those two things. Thanks for any help!

Regarding range play, yes, check marksman on the builder tool below:

    http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html

Ultimately, you'll be using talents from both trees (even if you go 51 points on marksman and 15 on the ranger)

Since the second role slot is very cheap I would recommend keeping one for dps and one for tanking when needed. I have no personal experience regarding paladin's levelling process. As a warrior you have access to all dps, tanking and support souls at all times, so you don't need to pigeonhole yourself to a specific type of gameplay. Instead, you can switch and adapt depending on the occassion.

You are precisely the kind of player that will LOVE the soul system in Rift. Both of your questions are non-questions when you understand the soul system. Have fun!

    In terms of levelling.

I found my tank/pally more easy to level than my ranger/marksman. My tank can kill mobs easy but my ranger had less surivability because the pet doesn't hold aggro very well and I found myself aggroing off my pet after the third ranged attack. So imo, i find levelling the tank easier than the ranger in terms of quests and mobs.

It is the opposite with pvp. My ranger/marksman excells at pvp and is lot more fun than my pally tank.

    Regards

    Melmoth

ps I chose a tank for PVE and a ranger for PVP, but I will create switch builds later.

You don't even need to roll a warrior to tank. Just use your second role on your rogue for the Rogue's tanking soul, Riftstalker.

If you prefer traditional sword-and-board tanking, the warrior class is nicely split between tanking souls and dps souls. I have Riftblade (kind of a battle-mage I guess) and Paladin (the most traditional tanking style) on my warrior.

You'll have three of the eight PvE souls for your class by the end of the starting area, and can buy a second 'spec' very easily and cheaply soon after. At level 13 you'll be able to do a series of easy quests to unlock the other five souls.

Justicar for Cleric is kind of good for tanking too, ain't it?

Oups, messed my souls. Justicar indeed, not Inquisitor. Inquisitor is a caster with preference on DoT damage.

Wish i could give you my copy. You'll get bored after a week unless you enjoy the repetitive task of Rifts and uninteresting quests. Doesn't matter about PC power either as game looks pants even in Ultra.

Wish you played in beta, so we wouldn't have to suffer due to your poor purchase decision. Really.

Each to their own, but how come you Still hang around Rift forums talking trash? You didn't enjoy it? It's too bad, but tough cookies.. Get over it already. No one game is for everyone.

Thanks for the replies guys, I am pretty happy to hear that the ranger without a pet is a viable class choice! And that Paladins are good enough at normal questing too.

I had done some reading on the souls thing so the way i understand it would be: After the starting area i have chosen 3 souls to put my points in when i level up, i can choose one of those or 3 or 2 its up to me. Then later i can purchase a secondary spec slot and either use the 3 souls i have or do quests to get more and use them as opposed to the three i initially picked.

So i have two specs and in those two specs i have the choice between 8 different roles that i can mix and match?

Actually, eventually you can have 4 specs and all the souls to mix and match. I don't know if this is based on level, funds, or whatever but I do know each class eventually has access to all the souls and 4 specs.

Thanks again, sounds ideal! Now i just have to get reading on what souls match up well so that i dont make a complete hash of it when my computer arrives!
