Even if most of the guild are the usual MMO players, enough of them are just jerks to give the entire guild a bad name.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Yea, I played on EvE during the height of the GS/BoB stuff. I just avoid. The ones I always remember were the asshats.
On the other hand that thing they did in Star Trek was hilarious. The forum rage from what was essentially a harmless prank was incredible to behold.

I hear they feed on raw forum drama. Luckily for them that's real easy to achieve due to so many people taking offense and rage about almost anything.

Goon Squard were religious nuts in WoW or they pretended to be. They had add-ons that would
auto quote/report to gm's bible verses if you said any thing bad in general chat.
If you ever ran heroics or raids with them they cursed a lot a talk a ton of smack on other
guilds in WoW.
Goons are and always the biggest joke ever and the sad part is, they are proud of it.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
Pretty much this. Sadly, they weren't always this terrible. I was with them briefly in...Horizons or AC2, I forget. They were a huge guild back then, but there didn't seem to be so many idiots. Unfortunately, they take pride in being griefers now.

Not to mention that one thing they did in that one game. I'm sure those people were mad, but can you imagine what those other guys had to do in that one situation. Man, oh man! Do you follow? DO YOU FOLLOW?

Yeah, GS are pretty much the village idiots of any MMO they play. At least, every member I've had the displeasure of interacting with certainly was. It's best just to ignore them if at all possible, as they seem to thrive on attention.
If you had played EVE, you would understand the d-baggery of Goonsquad/Goonswarm. After their main opponent, Band of Brother (BoB) disbanded, they got bored and members starting griefing carebear corps in the middle of Empire space (mostly safe areas). GS alt corps would come warring these groups for no reason. Yeah, that's EVE, all no man's land and all. But griefing carebear corps? Really? That's just sooooo badass. /sarcasm.
Goon will always be the scum of any mmo that ever comes out. KOS!

They are on the opposing side so I don't really mind them. My brother doesn't either. They aren't terribly good so other than PVE griefing I don't see why you'd "hate" them.

Meh, I play Defiant with the Goons and haven't had any issue. Sure, there's been players standing on top of the quest givers but it wasn't the Goons involved. (really bad design on the part of Trion btw)
I do think they have requirements for their members to grief or scam people in order to work their way up higher in their hierarchy which might be the behavior you observed. (its not really a random act of insanity)

Don't flatter your self dude. Goon guild (or whatever) is one of 10000000 guilds out there.
Back in their early days on Somethingawful, the group that would become the goon squad was highly hilarious. Sadly as their fame grew during WoW its seems the off kilter clever ones left and only the "weaned on paint thinner" crowd remained.
To resort to hyperbole, they went from a witty quirky comedy group such as Monty Python, to being more like the druken, racist, lunatic at the corner pub who entertains his fellow drunks by stuffing handfuls of peanuts up his nose while lighting his own farts. Or a better description may be they went from being Landover Baptist (the mock, comedy religious site) to acting more like the Westbro Baptist Church.
