    Honesly, nowadays, I'd prefer if there were fewer quests in an MMO - but the quests there were actually mattered and were awesome. I'd rather long, drawn-out quest chains that are awesome from the beginning and end very epic and rewardingly.

    No, not just you. I am SO tired of mindless quests. :I

    Agreed, it's not quests that are the problem, it's 'jobs'.

    Rift is rammed full of 'jobs'.

    EQ2's heritage quests are a great example of what I would like to see in a themepark game (for now at least, until we evolve out of this WoW/ Aion/ Rift ghetto we have found ourself in).

    Teh, IMVPO even staff is permitted to their own opinion. ;)

    This idea that reviews are objective is just a myth anyway. So I advise the advanced reader to try to differ between what is opinion and what is fact. It's not so hard to read.

    That aside, I can't share the notion of the staff, however. (While I can respect that some see the game this way.) I agree it is beautiful. I can't understand why some say otherwise here. But I found the game quests utterly bland, the combat conservative, replayability zero and overall I felt quited bored around level 20+. And as I said many times, the respawn is WAAAAY too fast and hectic for my taste.

    I agree that the cities and hubs are lifeless. Alas an issue of many MMOs. Something WOW just has made SO much better.

    I think the environments are lovely in terms of art, no problems with saying that, but I think the models and gear design are crud.

    IMO ofc.

    "Rift is a WoW clone"

    Really? Really people? get over yourselves. 1: ui is like WAR, LOTRO 2: no mods, no macros to speak of yet 3: 4 specs and pvp trees that are separate from pve trees.

    sooooo how is it a wow clone again??? hmm hmm?

    Heh, funny, I was under the impression that no one is chained or tied up to any MMORPG let alone WoW, Aion or Rift.

    Meaning, there's Earthrise, DCUO, Ryzom, classic EQ, EVE, Xsyon, GW, CoX, VG, Darkfall, FE and a whole bunch of other non-WoW style/themepark MMO's around.

    Or to stay in the analogy, you don't have to live in the WoW/Aion/Rift ghetto, there's a lot of other different districts to stay in. I absolutely cannot wait for the information to come out on The Secret World, Kinda hoping this means it's getting a bit closer to being released

    The Secret World is the game I'm waiting for. Ragnar is the developer... I was in when the name started with an R!

    Rift has one thing many of the recent MMO releases did not.  A complete endgame at release.

    One you are level 50, there are 10 "expert" mode dungeons to do.  These are the same dungeons you went to while leveling, with different bosses, a slightly different layout/story and MUCH harder difficulty.  Plus, there are several 10 man "raid rifts" which are like mini raids you do in the open zones using a crafted lure to open the raid.  Also, there is currently one 20 man raid in the game.

    On top of that, Trion has two more raids already completed and slated for release within 60 days.  One is another tier 1 raid, and the other is Hammerknel, which is a tier 2 raid rumored to have a double digit amount of bosses and be quite large in size.

    If your looking for a new MMO, and like the traditional high fantasy type of game, give Rift a look.  The dev team at Trion is top notch, and knows that to keep their customers they need to keep the game fresh with content.  I know I sound fanboyish here, but seriously Trion does not mess around, and they have done nothing but impress throughout beta and into release.  If they can keep it up, Rift will be a major player in the market for quite some time.

    And no, I choose NOT to be there, hence me not playing this particular themepark MMO.

    I will indeed wait for another district to be opened in the sub genre that suits me, one that is built by passionate devs and not accountants.

    Good quests:

    - many of LOTRO's quests, especially the Book Quest

    - AoC in Tortage

    - WOW new "old World" post Cata, like Westfall or Redridge

    Just imvpo^^

    That's the problem, though, having a few raid dungeons  at launch isn't anything special as just about every mmo matures to encompass an endgame, but the critical point is that by selling the game on end-game you are basically saying that the game to get there isn't particularly worthwhile.  Aion was the same grind away then PvP siege at max level.

    Rift is a big well made chocolate cake. If you want chocolate cake and if you like chocolate cake then you won't be disappointed in Rift. It is moist and has a well made buttercream frosting and they have even added sprinkles and a few candles to make it a bit special.

    But no matter how well made a chocolate cake it might be if you are looking for beef stew then you are not going to be impressed and you are not going to be happy and at the end you will be unfullfilled and full of useless calories.

    Don't be fooled by the pictures of a chocolate cake on the cover of the Rift box as what is inside is just chocolate cake please go purchase a can of stew if that is what you are in the mood for. Don't blame us if you end up fat and with pimples after you consume your share of Rift.

    I'm skeptical of this whole end-game business, but I'm an ex-DAOC player.  No game can even compare to DAOC's endgame, and I doubt Rift will be much different.  More of that gear grinding raiding bs I couldn't care less about, I'm afraid.  That said, I'm enjoying the levelling up bit.  I find it feels less repetitive than most MMOs (e.g. WoW and Aion)  and I love the character development system.

    My biggest complaints are the lack of RP fluff and diversity.  Too much of the armor looks the same, and most of it looks like crap.  No item remodelling or appearance slots.  Visual aesthetic stuff like that, but overall, I'm liking it more than any other MMO I've tried in a long time.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

    All that matters is that I am having a blast!  I can't stop playing this game.  The more I get into the soul trees the more badass my charecter is to play.  The graphics are so good turned all the way up that sometimes I just stopped and look around.  I've been playing a ton and can't wait to hit cap.  In fact I will most likely be making an alt as soon as I hit 50 to level slower in conjunction with doing end game stuff on my warrior.  SO MUCH FUN!!!

    and since Ryzom is going Freemium, a game that some people consider the ultimate sandbox, there really is no reason.

    But people will find issue with Ryzom as well.

    Oh no!! Not another positive Rift article! Haters and Trolls incomming!! ^^  I feel much the way about Rift myself.  Its an enjoyable, well polished game. I'm not looking for the One True Game(tm) as some here seem to be.  But I do wish all of those still engaged in that endless chase, the very best of luck.   I'm quite enjoying Rift. The rifts and invasions add quite a bit to the game, and make it feel more alive. Not to mention not having to spam chat for a group is really nice.

    My argument is that we haven't seen a sandbox title with a bit of depth since EVE.

    Given what these titles cost to produce, and the limited audience for them in the western markets, thats hardly surprising.  Lets face it, "sand box" games tend to attract more than their share of a certain type of player.  These players tend to get their jollies from ruining the play experience of other players. Thats just not good for a companies business model in the modern western markets.  Theme park games (like WoW and Rift) on the other hand, target a much larger section of the audience. Thus its hardly a surprise that the suits and investors focus on theme park games.

    It really isnt...

    But anyhow, using the analogy anyhow, a lot of people were in fact looking for choccy cake and after reading the box thought this was gonna be a luxury giant choccy cake that might last them a while.

    When they opened the box though they found out that the cake was tiny, undecorated, and tasted stale.

    A game that is a sandbox in design doesn't necessarily have to have FFA PvP.  SWG:Pre-NGE is often held up as a fantastic sandbox game, and it had no FFA PVP. I would guess that most people who like sandbox games aren't advocating for pre-Trammel UO style gameplay.

    You're (purposely?) missing the point: there's already a lot of different districts to be in, no need for waiting at all.

    As for saying that you're chained, these are your words: until we evolve out of this WoW/ Aion/ Rift ghetto we have found ourself in

    'you have found yourselves in?'

    Get real. There's all kinds of choice, saying that you've 'found yourself in a WoW/Aion/Rift ghetto' negates any active choosing from your side or looking for different MMO's, as if there are no other MMO's around.

    Which is a blatant lie, there are lots of all kinds of MMO's, you just chose not to seek them out if the situation happens that you 'find yourself in a WoW/Aion/Rift ghetto'. Simple as that.

    It’s interesting that people demand sandbox games but then don’t play them.  Then spend all their time on blogs posting comments on how theme park games suck.  I don’t classify Eve as sandbox; it is a very large single server theme park game…just my opinion.

    I have been able to be in the beta for Rift since day 1 but found nothing that commanded my attention.I have evolved personally away from just ranting because  because . I really have nothing positive to say about Rift.It's another new game.It doesn't bring to me what I am looking for, which is  a  game with a  great 24/7 faction vs faction  element.So I play Civilization 5 and wait for GW 2 ....End of nations....or Planetside 2.

    It quickly becomes possible to solo minor rifts 2 levels above your current level.

    In fact, I noticed a pattern here. I could always solo any mobs exactly 2 levels above me, but mobs 3 levels above me only occasionally, and only if I used every skill I had on a long cooldown. This seems intentional, but it felt awkward, because it was predictable. Always with the two level thing.

    WoW = McDonalds

    WAR = Burger King

    Rift = Carl's Jr.

    GW2 = TGIFriday's
