Our MMORPG.com team is on the floor during the craziness that is the Game Developers' Conference. Drew Wood had the opportunity to check out Black Prophecy as it is embarking on the European open beta and has thoughts to share about what he saw. Check out Drew's Black Prophecy GDC Preview and let us know what you think in the comments below.
All comparisons aside, let me dive into the thick of what Black Prophecy is. When we look at Black Prophecy, you're looking at a Space-Combat (which means in your ships), action oriented MMORPG. The game is rooted in a deep background story, cut scenes, voice over and everything that we've come to expect from games that put the story forward first. The entirety of the game, aside from when you're collecting missions and the like, takes place in your ship, in space. The action is heavy, intense and, can occassionally, be a little confusing as there's simply so much going on on the screen at once. That being said, the game looks good. The graphics and the visuals are lovely, run very smoothly, and are dynamic and not exactly the same as anything else that is out there.

its cool that they are hitting open beta, here to the hope that open beta will hit the Americas
Played it a few days ago (Europa OB) and damn, it looks great. Controls feel great as well. Didn't really give the game any time yet as I am very busy with other games at the moment but def. keeping my out for this one.
so is it like GA but with space ships?
Playing: PO, EVE
Waiting for: WoD
Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO
Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.
Reminds me of a fleshed out EnB.
*grabs joystick and takes place in the cockpit*
Started to play earlier today and I LOVE IT TOO. Earlier in CB the game made me sick, and I hope now I can handle it. As Drew said - there's sometimes TOO MUCH on the screen to focus on, and then I'm just an old(er) guy playing an action MMO. Perhaps joystick over mouse will make the difference as well
Good to hear that gamigo / Reakktor will not aim the itemshop to buy your way to strength, but just to customize (and blueprints mist likely too). That'll make the make more awesome IMO!
This game feels good and is in a way like freelancer. The story is kinda taken and alterd, bit not alot, from Battlestar galactica. overall this game is worth the try (free anyways)
It might be an interesting MMO evolution of single/multi-player games like Freespace and Freelancer.
I was in the EU closed beta, even though I'm in the US. I love the game but most of the time I had terrible lag issues(which is understandable considering the servers are for EU).
I'm looking forward to the US open beta.
The game controls follows Freelancer, which i like. The game is beautiful even on medium settings. I cant comment on gameplay yet, just had a few hours on my belt.
" it might be very easy to look at the show and simply dismiss it as another incarnation following in EVE Online's footsteps."
HAHA! Name me ONE MMORPG which has done that? Only one I can think of is Perpetum but that is not even a space based MMORPG.
If anything this genre needs more Eve clones and less WoW clones.
My gaming blog
wanna play, but they don't send me the key >.<
In my mind I see ships right click on destroyed ships to auto loot them. Punching hot bars to do 'skills' which affect the random number generator, and raids where you have one ship 'tank' the npcs, another 'heal' the tank, and the rest 'dps'. And when thats done you go 'quest' and 'craft'.
Why cant there just be a actual xwing vs tie fighter PVP mmo? Where you spend most of your time on a carrier or station which your 'guild' owns, walking around like an avatar, and then when battle stations are called, you haul it down to your ship, launch it and go shoot stuff. Send out haulers to tractor in the wreckage for loot.
heh it made an "older" guy sick playing it; I'm guessing motion sickness. That's pretty damn immersive. I might have to check this one out.
been waiting for this for ages! thx goodness someone pick it up
Yeah, we need more Space Flying games and less Pointed-Ear-Freaks-With-Swords ones, we're getting tired of all that silly cloning crapolla
