the crafting system is just like wow. but unlike wow they didnt make it too 'grindy' i am able to level my professions while leveling. without too much effort of buying ore/logs/etc.
You can basically have 3 professions at once. Any combo you want. 2 gathering and 1 crafting or vice versa
Nope. No fishing, cooking, engineering, first aid, etc. (as far as i know). Just 3 gathering professions and 6 crafting professions... and all items crafted are mostly for fighting such as outfitter (cloth/leather armor), Armorsmith (chain/plate), weaponsmith, etc.
No fishing or cooking..as of yet. have no idea if they will add them in the future. Only professions I know of...mining(smelting)..butchery(skinning/some aspects of leather working) ..outfitting.(tailor and leather working..armor creation)...foraging..(wood and plants ..that i know of)...armorcraft(metal)...weapon craft (metal and wood). These are all the ones I've experimented with so far.
If you've done WOW (and most other) crafting then you've done this. One thing of note...At several points in my advancement..I have been able to craft leather armor pieces for my rogue that have been better that any quest reward/PVE loot drop that I was currently wearing. I made them even better by adding bonus to armor stats with the special crafting ingredients. Can't remember what they are called..but there is..at least at novice and skilled levels..a slot at the bottom of the crafting window where you can add an essence or crystal(?) that will add a bonus to dex +1 to +(?) for example. You can purchase stat bonus crafting materials with planarites (currency obtained from Rift battles) from merchants in crafting areas. They have various levels ..like novice...skilled...etc...etc.
I picked up Artisan, Mining and Outfitter on my mage. I'm completely blocked by not having any access to wood over than the moronic auction house with idiot prices from gougers. A single stick of wood costs 5-10x as much as a semi-rare Planar Essence item...
Both Artisan and Outfitter make extensive use of wood/leather for nearly everything (even basic starting items) and I'm stuck having to buy it from selfish children.
So yeah, skip crafting, it's a mess. It's also identical to WoW, so you're not missing anything.
I agree that it is like WOW crafting and that you're not missing anything. I disagree that it is a mess though. Just like other games there are complimentary professions. I usually choose 2 complimentary professions..butchery and outfitting. ( You can get all the leather you need with butchering and cloth needed for other outfitter recipes can be readily had from various mob drops. Then I usually take a gathering profession..in this case mining because metal bars are always a good seller on th AH and thus a good way to supplement income for anything you may need to buy on AH or elsewhere. I don't gouge people tho..I'll agree some of the AH prices are ridiculous.Maybe it will settle down after a while once the economy adjusts...but there are always overcharging tools in any mmo. Otherwise, I enjoy crafting for the leather armor I can make myself and as a time-out i.e....click "craft all " to turn 200 pieces of soft hide to soft leather and go to the bathroom..lol. Not the best crafting ever..but usable.
Another nice part about crafting is each profession has the ability to break down items of the same type. So my mage outfitter (cloth/leather armor) gets a green leather drop she can't wear. No problem I can salvage it and break it down into parts. Kinda like disenchanting in WoW.
Another cool thing with Rift's crafting system is you have to level mining by actually MINING. You can't just buy a stack of ore and smelt your way to the top. Other big thing like DrowNoble mentioned above is being able to salvage items within your crafting ability (weaponcrafters can break down weapons and armorsmiths can break down armor - nice touch.)
Like everything else about Rift, crafting is very similar yet somehow refined - and that's a good thing!

Should have gone with Runecrafting instead of Artificer. Artificer needs foraging and mining. I believe Outfitter can do with just Butchering, but it could probably use mining as well.
Might consider leveling another character or joining a guild if you want to be able to do two creation professions at once.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Perhaps it will be added later, but there are other things that buff you other than grinding for food materials every day.
By the way, you get to choose 3 professions so you can pick 2 gathering profs plus one crafting or whatever combination you want.
If you like fishing, you should check out Vindictus...you fish with a crossbow.
