i got to level 7.  what attracted me was how the dungeon and raid mechanics are actually part of the open world.  i always wished WoW had large npc siege forces that would invade cities that you would have to fend off with other players around you.  so far the experience has been excellent.

but what i really want to say is that my initial first impressions were, "i am playing WoW."

-the UI is nearly identicle in positioning and look.

-press "N" for same looking talent tree, "C" for same looking character tab.

-stats on gear and character seem to be identicle, crit ratings, block values, etc etc.

-gear; trash whites, quest greens, i am sure there are blues as well, not sure what epic gear color is

-lesser healing potion has same name and even similar icon, same with lesser mana potion...

-combat appears identicle.  cooldown icons in how they look and act is the same as WoW.

-quest system is the same.

the game is great, don't get me wrong.  it is definately worth playing if you played WoW.  but i can't help but think that not only is the game not original enough in how it presents itself, but the copy and paste systems from WoW are so prelavent that it would not be surprising if blizzard files a lawsuit for copyright infringement or similar.

Well when Meridian 59's developers get some lawsuit money then I guess I'll see your point.

Until then I'll just have to await "Rift is a WoW clone arglebargle!!1!1!!" thread #789 ...

I cannot even begin to comprehend how ignorant someone has to be to think Rift is that much like WoW. Have you played any other MMO's out there? All of them play the same, interface is the same, questing is pretty much the same, etc. Other than that, what is it about Rift that reminds people of WoW.

I'm not a fanboy. I tried betas and it didn't hook me. I might try it later but atm i'm hooked on EQ2 again. But I'm prtty fed up with people saying this about game that they are just like WoW.

If you feel like humoring me, be specific about what Blizzard should sue Trion for. Otherwise, I hope you get banned for trolling.

In how it looks Rift is very similar to WoW, except for the slightly more realistic models and artwork.

When you get down to how it plays and feels it's much closer to Warhammer Online, which makes sense.

Yeah let them do that, then we can sit back and wait for every other developer from whom Blizzard stole everything  to create theire little lovechild to sue them.

It's Purple like in WoW ... and if I recall many more MMO's.

As for copyright infringement I think they can only sue if Trion violates Blizzard's intellectual property. Wich I think is improbable since the lore and story is not at all the same.

Sidenote, Blizzard settled or lost (I am not sure) a lawsuit from Gamesworkshop for Starcraft's IP (Intellectual property). GW claimed that Starcraft was copied from Warhammer 40k and they proved their point.

Besides the UI and the feel of it, the game is NOTHING like WoW (I played WoW for 5 yrs) so I don't think it's gonna be an issue.

By this logic the first forum poster ever can sue all of us for also making forum posts that include a username, message, subject and signature.

Yes, RIFT looks like WoW. Just like I look like Brad Pitt. I've also got 2 legs, 10 fingers, 1 head, 2 eyes etc. Unfortunately the world doesn't work that way and if I want to get laid I can't rely purely on my rugged good looks.

RIFT looks like WoW because the WoW interface works for that type of themepark MMO. So the RIFT devs looked at what works and went with that. Don't fix what isn't broken. It's like making a car that you have to drive by whiggling your tongue in complicated patterns because all the other companies were already using steering wheels.

If you want to play a game that is so unlike WoW that there's nothing more unlike WoW then I suggest you do a negation on the machine code of WoW ( take all the binary numbers that compose the WoW game files, turn every '1' into a '0' and every '0' into a '1' ). You're now playing the game that's the least like WoW and probably crashing your PC at the same time, congratulations!

Ever notice Rift plays like the game you just got done playing. I have heard Rift is like

    LOTR...WoW...EQ...EQ2..Vanguard!?!?...WAR...Aion.

You got hand it to the guy who did not decide to reinvent the wheel here because he proved

something by doing this. The reason you hear Rift vs WoW is beause they outnumber the Rift

vs EQ...or Rift vs WAR crowd.

    Yes.

    Everybody, close your eyes.

Let's pretend it doesn't look like WoW. Let's pretend it doesn't play like WoW. Let's think of a million reason why it's different than WoW. Let's call everyone a troll / flamer for saying Rift is almost identical to WoW.

    Now open your eyes.

Oh my god, it actually is a WoW2

It's perfectly fine if you wish to think of the game as almost identical.  That is your opinion.  But to ask for a lawsuit? lol. Come on. That's baiting and we all know it.

I don't think anyone here ever really considers the source or post history when they reply. Latch on to some key words and blindly fire a few vollies into the fray.

I think he exaggerates with the health potions and stuff. But still, of course he is right that it is a lot like wow. Rogues with energy that use abilities to create up to 5 combo points to then use a finisher, just as an example... *shrugs*

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

They were already sued by Palladium Games for stealing all the lore from another game called RIFTS.

I don't see how having similar, or exactly the same, UI makes it WoW. If that is the depth of your interest in a game, you should stop playing all games forever. Oh, and if you don't like that the hotkeys are the same, remap them.

  • xcutionrxcutionr Member Posts: 63

I don't think anyone is saying it doesn't look like WoW. What people are saying is that all these games look the same so why are WoW fans complaing. I guarantee if this game was called WoW2 you would be defending this game to the death.
