Friday March 4th update: bounty hunter, PAX East and Deceived novel

MMO.MaverickMMO.Maverick Member CommonPosts: 7,619

I guess there are some people who'll never be satisfied with the BW friday updates for SWTOR, but I thought myself that this friday's updates were interesting ones.

First there's of course the expected Bounty Hunter update, with info about the bounty hunter classes, the Mako companion and the D5 Mantis.

Also, of course, the Bounty Hunter class video

I've got to say, the graphics are starting to look better and better, to the point of awesome in some cases. Also the animation is starting to look more natural and fluid.

Some BH screenshots:

Next to that, there's the news about the Deceived novel:

In Deceived, you’ll learn the story of Darth Malgus and his rise to power. Delve into the dark secrets and history that shaped one of the most powerful Sith Lords the Old Republic would ever know…

The news article also has a Darth Malgus video trailer, with to my surprise some new footage in it (at the end).

And then there's the PAX East news that can be found here.

It has details about the PAX East. One of the things is that a mid level Flashpoint (= SWTOR dungeon) can be played

'visitors to Booth 912 will be among the first in the world to play the mid-game Republic Flashpoint, Taral V! Taking the role of a Trooper, Smuggler, Jedi Knight or Jedi Consular, you’ll team up with other players in an extended hands-on gameplay experience'

Also all 8 of the Republican classes can be played, and all the Origin Worlds at the convention.

So, what were you people's thoughts about the friday update of this week?

I want a goddamn release date, at the least wanted to know if they'll be announcing the release date at PAX. I am sick to death of looking at screenies, storyline updates and videos now. Saying that, the BH update is epic. You know, id love to play BH at launch, and i was a Master Bounty Hunter in SWG, but you just know every kid and his dog will be playing a Bounty Hunter. :(

I think it'll be ok, look here at the class preferences

I'm really psyched about PAX east... I'm really hoping for a decent reveal or two.. looking forward to hearing all of the feedback.  Those BH screenshots are top notch also..

  • just thought i would put this in here before people start asking about player bounties.

As always with an MMORPG, things may change in the future, but player bounties are not planned for the launch of The Old Republic.

so no player bounties planned for launch if ever

Well, if I pick this game up I know I'm pretty much committed to a class on each side... Damn it Bioware, why did you have to go and make the Sith side just as hard as the Republic? :P  Now I have four classes I'm on the fence for when it comes to pwning those force users. :P

Those screens look really nice. Really, really nice.

1st and 3rd pics are good.

The second is really bad. The helmet not only does not fit the rest of the gear but it look like and inversed plate with a mask.

Pray for a social clothing tab...

I actually liked the helmet on the 2nd pic much better than the 1st. Its very detailed and the top part of the helmet gives it a kind of cowboyish feel to it.  I'd wear it.

Well I'm glad you like it but it does not belong to this suit for sure.

(edit) Not a big fan of the Lawrence or Arabia's one either but at least it does fit the rest of his gear.

Heh, I'm not surprised, I'd expected you to make at least 1 negative comment, I expected even more, there's always a choice of negative comments to make image  ('where's the pvp news?' 'where's news about the endgame content?' 'still no release date? This means TOR'll release later this year, if at all in 2011' etc etc)

Me, I liked the 2nd pic because it was different from the common armor looks that are associated with bounty hunter: cloth instead of hard armor, and a different helmet and face plate.

Besides that, the texture detail and overall character/gear detail is in all the pics a step up from earlier TOR character pics that had far less detail in their looks. Which makes me positive about their gradual improving of the graphics - and animation, for that matter - towards launch.

Yeah, I think they could have had a better suit.. I find that they do this with some of the low level bounty hunter costumes.  The starter costumes especially you seem to have very cloth based gear with a helmet that seems very high tech.  You see it in some of the earlier BH videos.   I guess if all the early sets were high tech plate looking armor then the visual progression might get a little boring.

  • kegtapkegtap Member Posts: 261

2nd pic is used for the mercenary spec on the swtor site.

    mercenary

If the best defense is a good offense, the Mercenary’s got the most

intimidating defense in the galaxy. Heavily-modded blasters and deadly heatseeking missiles make the Mercenary a mobile heavy weapons

platform. There’s no problem extra firepower can’t solve, and no one

who knows what he’s doing gets between a Mercenary and his target.

so the other 2 pics must be the powertech spec as it looks like they get the heavy armor.

    powertech

A Powertech wears heavy plating like a second skin and never

balks at taking on the newest prototype technology if it means greater protection and upgraded safeguards. The best in armor shielding, smart defensive tactics and high-powered flamethrowers combine to make the Powertech an impenetrable one-man blockade, from which few enemies

    escape unscathed.

I am really strating to like this class.

I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.

You are right the clothie gear is appreciated. The helemet is well... I don't like it but I can see people liking it. And I'm glad some do so it'll add diversity to the game! There's some animation on the social clothing tab on TOR forums so I'm in the fight the evil mood ^_^

I don't see any improvement in the character details, just different gear but I can be wrong. And yes I expect animations, especially movement ones being improved until launch too.

Well, if you compare it with pics from last year, these 3 and some of the others are looking a lot better.

If I'd seen these pictures the first time when I learnt about SWTOR and saw screenshots, I wouldn't have had the qualms and complaints about the TOR graphics as I did last year.

If the state of the environment graphics and character graphics are already at the level of the BH pics and the Coruscant ones, then it's looking good enough for launch for me.

likely has to do with bounties you go after during quests and the story

    Hey,

Since 'bounties' is a loaded term for some people, let me clarify - and you can quote me on this:

"You will be doing plenty of bounty hunting as part of the story and the quests in the game."

Well, these were the kinda pictures I saw first when I read about SWTOR, which I found kinda 'meh':

I have a much more positive impression of the graphics ingame with pictures like in the OP and these ones:

Well, at least to me I found these other images more acceptable to my taste than the earlier first ones I saw of SWTOR.

This is how I see it happening as well. Player bounties just leads to too many headaches. Even with a complete opt in system players will still complain and this always leads to each class asking for the other to be nerfed; which leads to tension and anger between players.

The animation and graphics quality looks really good for me.

I don't really care about graphics but this looks mighty fine compared to the initial screenshots we had.

Really looking forward to the heaps of 'impressions/previews/first look/pre-release stuff' articles on the PAX East demo.

Seems pretty much the exact same thing to me but it's a close up.

Same belt buckle, same bandoleer, same pocket belt.. The only difference I see is in the helmet and the lighting.

In the new one the helmet top has a red/brownish dye at the top versus a metallic blueish in the old one. And in the new one the sides of the helmet have a metallic tint while in the old one they have a red/brownish tint.

Now the interesting part as we already saw it in the BH video is it hints at gear dyes ;)
