After all, Blizzard chose for low polygon count and texture detail for its graphics for a reason.
Yep, they did. They choose it so you can play their game even with an old computer.
Increase the poly count, double texture resolution, completely change the color scheme and art direction with more realistic textures and designs, which will obviously increase the system specs, and you have a new MMORPG with "realistic" graphics like Rift but also with the smooth gameplay and animations of WoW.

Sure. But as said, I don't think they're able to manage and dynamic content on this enormous scale, and the high res graphical quality and hundreds of players and mobs fighting lagless in a close spot all happen together at the same time.
You may think that they can, but I very much doubt it, not without a reworking of its engine from the ground up, which is what the comparison was about.

Rifts graphics are good in parts and awful is other parts, they use fog/mist etc to cover the bad parts. The terrain is barren & bland in most area's and the area's can look very depressing. I am not a fan of the colour palette used in the game but in some areas the game looks fantastic, The Codex and the cities looks good (but could be grander) and some of the towns look great. Just not sold on the rest of it yet.

Rifts graphics are mediocre, definitely not great.
