It makes all the difficult decisions for you, it is simple, it looks good, it offers nothing new and complex to confuse people(except maybe the soul system).  It appeals to the masses.  It is the flavor of the month.  It had a good relatively bug free release.  It allowed everyone to pre-play in beta, giving them power-play options upon release.  It appeals to the vast majority of MMO players who began playing mmos after November 23rd, 2004.

Not too suprised it is currently doing well and people have many awesome things to say about it.

I played beta, was not too impressed, but then again I suppose I have high standards, or am looking for something that is on a different "Track". (pun intended)

Those who enjoy it, good for you!  I hope to find my own game in which I can enjoy again myself.  For MMO-games sake at least, show that the MMO community can stick with a game and not abandon it after a few months..(Must I list the overhyped mmos that were amazing and everyone loved at release and now are the red-headed stepchild?)

    I agree with you.

This is a solid game, but unfortunately 70% of people who are playing it now will abandon it in few months time for next big thing, or they'll just quit out of boredom.

It would be nice to think that at least this game will retain a good chunk of players, but having played Beta since phase 1, it doesn't look to me like it has lot of longevity.

I still think it has a lot in common with Warhammer although it is much better executed, but still is it gets boring after a while

    Its gameplay is rather predictable

Why don't you name an MMO that doesn't have gameplay that is predictable, AoC had great gameplay of course didn't like the idea of remembering combos. Also the next big thing ain't coming till winter 2011.

Almost all MMORPGs which came out after WoW have a predictable gameplay, that's why people won't stay subscribed for more than a couple of months

The gameplay is very linear and that's what causes the boredom in the medium term

Once the game is "beaten" people generally move on, and in those MMOs, beating the game is getting increasingly easy

Oh give me a break WoW been the same thing for 6+ years and sitting at 12 million subs.Fact is sad as it may be Rift is the first really good stable mmo that has came out in years.I think it will hold its on and maybe even grow in the coming months they can easily hold what they got just by keepin the content coming in a faster manner than WoW.ALOT of ppl even fanbois have had it with Actiblizzard after Cata and they are trying other things now.

Hmm have you ever played AoC, City of heroes or heck even DC U all of them have far better non *predictable* gameplay than WoW but latter has far more players. In MMO what you saying doesn't matter what so ever, people want predictability in MMOs.

I think a lot of it is the leveling factor.  Too many people rush to end game and grow bored with lack of content.

They run through 50 levels of content in 1 week, and expect there to be 200 levels of content at end game.  (I know you don't keep leveling at end game, but I am using 50 levels worth of content as a general "content" count.)

I have played many many many betas myself, since 2001 and onward.  I find them amazingly fun, but you know why?  Because everything is new to me.

Now I question whether I not I truely want to beta test a game.  It ruins the "new experience" for me.  I know everything, and it ruins my gameplay because everyone else knows everything.

Rift is immensely successful at the moment.  I did play the beta 2-6 for it.  My main gripe was the fact that when it released, everyone knew everything about it.  They knew how to power-game through it and reach max level.  They knew where the best hunting spots were, they knew where to gather the crafting materials.

Some may see this as a plus, but I find it annoying.  It reminds me of what I am playing now, The Everquest Progression server.  Everyone knows where the good spots are, where/what to farm and how to reach maximum level the fastest.

The raid mobs on the server, all of them, were down in the first week, and led to a lot of people having "elitist" attitudes because they felt they were better than others merely because they knew the game inside and out and knew where the best spots were, had plenty of time to play, and didn't care to talk/socialize with the rest of the mmo community.

I personally wish beta tests were more limited and closed doors, releasing little information until the actual game released, and everyone was on even playing ground, exploring, dieing, and discovering new things together.

So why I can understand the "need" for massive amounts of players to test the "stabibility" of a server, I do not feel the need to allow 200,000 people into beta testing.  Or even the need for open beta testing.

The only 2 main reasons I can understand would be to stress test servers, and massive free marketing (which I think backfires, as everyone plays the game the first time around, so when it actually releases, it is a 2nd playthrough and many people grow bored with the "this isn't new anymore" factor.

This is all my speculation, opinion, and views which I am entitled too.  Just curious as to what more of you think.  If you disagree that is fine, just try to reply in a somewhat mature manner.  I am not attempting to bash anyone or your MMO.

Cataclysm is what killed Wow for me. Here's a multi-million dollar company putting out meager same ole same ole content. On top of that the classes STILL are not balanced for PVP - in fact it's gotten worse.

Rift has less restictions on class construction which is one of my favorite things out the game. I'm a plate wearing Warrior beastmaster who can cast - I cancelled my Wow sub immediately.

If Rift can add more content which can keep people interested they have a real shot of taking Wow's #1 spot away from them. Time will tell and I hope Rift will at least prosper because it's a really really fun game.

Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
