I am sooo on the fence about buying Rift! Half of me wants to rush out and snatch up a box, while the other half of me tells me it's another waste of $50....just like AOC, WAR, AION ect. Not that those said games are bad at all, I actually really enjoyed my time in all of them. AOC was (and I guess still is) an awesome game...but coming from Funcom I expected something super deep and complex, but there was just npcs with "!" over their heads telling me where to go. Also, the game would just randomly crash then i would have to re-download a 1gb patch, but I wasn't mad. It;s my fault for buying something I know nothing about the day it comes out. I had a fun month I suppose. Warhammer...ahh warhammer...the be all and end all of the mmo world. I was super stoked because I thought it was going to be in space with space marines and alien orks...turned out to be another fantasy realm. Ok still all good, played the beta and loved it! pre ordered me and my gf a copy (over $100!!), and we played it like fiends...up until tier 2, then tier 3 came along and that was that. Still a great time while it lasted. I remeber playing WoW and there was a guild called ...I bet they feel pretty silly. Then Aoin comes along, it's the big WoW killer, of course nothing will ever "kill" WoW, but Aion was it. Picked up Aion the day of it's launch, was super exicted like yeaaaaa pvp and stuff wooo..........ummm more NPCs with "!" over their head. My gf really took a liking to Aion so I ended up buying her a copy (another $50!). We actually played Aoin for a good 4-5 months, cool and awesome game for sure. I even bought lotro at launch, it was sold out everywhere so I found one wal mart with a collectors edition for $65. I got it, with high hopes for a real rpg with stats up the ass...but same thing , NPCs with a "!" over their head, and when I level up - no choice as to where my points go (this was before aoin, aoc and war of course).
The days of Anarchy Online, Asherons Call, and Ultima Online seem a thing of the past. The days of where you could log in and be in a virtual world, not just a gear grinding e-peen contest. The days before the acution house (one of the worst things to happen to the genre I think sometimes), where you could meet some random person you met from the trade chanel, and get together in a dark alley somewhere and only hope that they weren't trying to rip you off. You could wheel and deal with people, and the sense of getting a good deal, or the sense of "i think I just got flim-flammed" was a real and tangible thing, and really immersed you into this virtual world even further. Social nuances were once a big and very important part of the games. I realize that people who started with WoW will never understand this concept, having never been a part of it, and like to call us sandbox criers old school and gay, and tell us that we need to get over it and get with the times. But, there was something great about the pre-wow mmos, something you really can't put a finger on..but it was there. Will it ever happen again? Hopefully so, but probably not. Those of us who were a part of it remember it fondly, and rightfully so.
Anyways, this has turned into a drunken rant when I just wanted to ask a quick question...wtf did i want to ask??
Ohhh....does Rift have a buddy key?
If I buy Rift can I give a buddy a buddy key, and can he download the game and try it out for a few days?
If the answer is yes, then Rift is being purchased tomorrow (after I kill the hangover lol), if no..then it's DC universe and ddo for me.
Rift - yay or nay?
Comments
In the title I meant off not of.....see kids, don't drink and drive your computer around the internet.
I do not play it myself. However, I participated in all the beta events. In my opinion, it's a great game, and certainly not the same case as the games you mentioned. IF you like these kind of MMORPGs (Fantasy themed, EQ/WoW/LotRO combat) but tired of those games due to whatever, I recommend Rift.
Why do I not play it? I am tired of the combat and gear over skill mechanic. I do find Rift a great game, but it's not for me anymore.
If your not sure and the money is a problem, wait a bit, price will drop eventually and there will probably be a free trial in a few months.
I did the same thing with Aion and FF, bought em, played em for a months and then got bored and went back to DAoC or WoW.
Rift is essentially no different to WoW, Warhammer or any other fantasy mmo release in the last few years except it takes the best of the rest and combines them brilliantly, it's polished and looks great.
I bought it, im playing it and loving it but i know it'll not hold my attention forever.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
its just a fun game, and hands down smoothest launch i have ever been in. i've seen 0 buggs and no problems with lag. closest thing to a bug i've seen is they disabled the runebreaking ability for like a day and a 1/2 i think it was, because they found out some people was exploiting with it some how. idk how or what they was doing just know i couldn't break stuff till they fixed it.
they didn't try to reinvent the wheel, wich alot of people here think a new MMO has to do or its "teh sux". they have alot of fun classes to play and i really like that when my alt itis kicks in and i'm playin my assassin i can switch out his role to the ranger build i have set up and it feels like i'm on an alt, even tho i'm still playing my main.i wanna do an instance, but wanna tank i'll switch his role to the riftstalker build i have set up and tank on my rogue.
Why didn't you just play the Open Beta.........
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
RIFT doesn't really give much of a first impression. The first few levels will feel exactly like what we've already done before... you need to give it a little bit more time. Once you get into the open world and start exploring what your class options are, start grouping with other players...the game starts to shine. Nobody can guarantee that you'll love RIFT, but i've bought all the same games as the OP and this has been my favorite so far.
No buddy keys that I'm aware of. It's a highly polished extension of the "themepark" arm. If you've played WoW, you'll have a very good idea of what Rift is all about. Add in the addition of constant Rift events and some skill tree freedom, and you have Rift.
A good game for what it is, nothing groundbreaking other than the fact that it ran PERFECTLY from day one. The MMO world could learn a lot from how Rift launched.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
Thank you for the responses guys. The reason I ask about the buddy key is becaause my best frined is a complete WoW addict. He used to be anti pc games until I introduced him to AO, which I basically had to force on him. While we were playing AO, I started playing WoW, and him and the rest of our AO mates would constantly rip me a new one about playing WoW. I'd log on after not playing for days and it would be all, "where have you been man??" and then before I could even answer "oh he's playing that little bitch girlie game world of fagcraft!!!" I completely agreed with them, but I had met a female on WoW and was playing with her so got hooked in that sense. My friend would call me on the phone almost daily and just go off on me how I "pussied out" and started playing a little kid game. I was like dude yea it's an ok game, but this chick I'm playing with is fine so fuck off lol.
So me and that chick kinda died off, so I ended up back on AO.
I again out of a drunken idea decided to play WoW again on a pvp server, this time go horde...and roll my most hated class...a rogue.
I played aliance previously, and developed a deep and disturbing hatred for gnomes.
I though to myself...man is it really possible to just run around and kill these people..and it was.
I didn't care about gear, or levels or anything...I just wanted to kill gnomes. And I did kill gnomes, slaughter them in thousands...I would usually leave dwarves or humans alone, but gnomes must die.
So I exicedely called friend and told him about this, I said "man this game is sick, you can just go invisible and pop out and kill gnomes" He was all like "but I kinda like gnomes" and I was all like "yea me to but wait until you see these gnomes you will want to kill them!!"
So I sent him a few sceenshots of gnomes, the next day he was installing the game and we were powereleving him into gnome land so the slaughter could commence. And it did, we killed countless gnomes, we made level-capped gnome killing friends. It was drunken fun, we gave the gnomes hell.
Where was I going with this? I dunno I'm drunk....so there's a story...
Well because I didn't care enough to do so. I kinda just wrote it off as another bleh whatever game, but the overwhelmingly positive response to Rift is intriguing to say the least.
Did you ever try Xsyon ???
I think, thats the game what you are looking for.
( Maybe MO or Darkfall, but both actually have e-peen contests )
Money isn't that big of an issue, but 50 bucks is still 50 bucks, ya know? Plus I'm relocating to a different city in June, and I don't even want to think about how much that's going to cost *cry*. Gotta start saving me thinks...
I'm allowing myself one (and only one) game purchase this month....it's down to 3:
Rift, Civilization 5, or Capcom vs. marvel for xbox
desicions decisions....
speaking of Rift, wouldn't an mmo based on Rifts be awesome??
Thanks for the advice Never tried xsyon, but heard it's the next thing (i try not too get too hyped about games so didn't read too much about it). I played Darkfall and it was...how to say..awesome? The only thing about Darkfall is that I felt like i was playing catch up the whole time. Mortal Online I would like to try, but again...I'm trying to get something my friend will play with me, and he won't touch games like that.
If you enjoyed your time in all of these games I'd say it wasn't a waste of 50 bucks then was it?
The retail price of an MMO is peanuts, it's less than a tank of gas. (Hell these days it's ALOT less). I don't understand the mentality of people who are willing to throw down 59.99 for the "new" Call of Duty game that is suspiciously similar to the "old" Call of Duty game that came out a year ago, but make the decision of buying a new MMO like they are buying a new car or something. They will post on forums about it, ask their friends, wait for free trials, read dozens of reviews and watch youtube videos first.
!@#$ me. Just buy it if you want to play it. You've probably wasted money on things alot worse and gotten alot less enjoyment out of them.
Well of those 3, Rift is the only one that has a subscription per month attached to it, so if you're watching your money and opt for Rift, then you need to take that into consideration, as it's roughly $15 a month after the first free 30days (live in the UK so don't know what the exact monthly cost is in dollars).
Intriguing you are considering MvC, out of the 3 you listed that is probably the weakest as far as longetivety goes in my humble opinion, great game when you have mates around but gets very boring if you plan on buying it for singleplayer entertainment. Civ 5 on the otherhand is a great singleplayer game that can get repetitive but hey, you got nukes in it! I have Civ 5 myself and can spend hours upon hours playing it and then not play it for a week, it's just that sort of game. It does have a multiplayer mode but i've yet to try it online.
One other thing, you mention about moving house, will your new house have internet from the get-go, or will you be waiting for a few months to have it installed? If you are waiting for a few months to have it installed, is it worth getting Rift before you move? If it were me and it was the latter I probably wouldn't bother getting it until i've sorted out my new house with internet but that's just me
Currently playing SWTOR and it's MUCH better than it was at launch.
I bought it yesterday, level 15 now. Currently it is not easy to log out. The tutorial levels until 6-7 were boring as hell, but then with the additional Rifts I have tons of fun.
It reminds me a bit of the movie "Matrix": World is peaceful, people solo their quests around you. Suddenly some rifts open and the hell breaks out, the people around you join an open raid with a single mouseclick, then even more people come to help and a big battle occurs. When the rift is succesfully closed, everyone disbands and goes back to their own "work".
It makes me think a bit about GW2; as they wanna do it completely without quests but one instanced questchain.
