Thanks to forum poster powerbait for this link leading us to an interesting little tidbit of info from the team over at Rift. While they don't get into any specifics, it is nice to see that this is a moving, breathing thing.
We’re already hard at work on Rift’s first major update and soon we will need your help! We will be temporarily opening the Alpha test shard for all players with an active subscription very soon, here you will be able to have a firsthand look at all the new content and improvements we have in the wings.

Cool deal. But this alpha shard is another name for a PTS or public test server correct? The use of the word "alpha" in testing usually implies something else.
if it's really just one shard the queue will explode
@Worstluck: They call them "Alpha Server" because it's the old alpha server, which used for closed alpha phase. If you have a alpha char from this phase you ccould login with your characters :P

Is that a screenshot of a Rift you can enter? I've heard rumour of these - and they sound awesomely cool. If anyone knows more, please share!!
Alpha is to Trion and Rift is their trunk test server. It is the ongoing development server where they implement changes and test fixes, new additions, and content. During beta they would spin off approved builds into the beta servers for the events while the "Alpha" moved on continuing it's progress. Now that the game is launched, things have not changed and it still acts as the ongoing development server, just now they will start letting in more people that are subscribed to help out.
It's almost out of this world to see developers of an MMO that's only just released work on their first content patch after only a few days, instead of spending weeks/months fixing things, which has become the industry standard for launching as of late...
they were working on the content patch before it was released
rift was ready ages ago.. its like they have released the game 'late'.
Trion do seam to be very on the ball . Isn't it great to see a new mmo doing well for a change and generally speaking getting possative reviews and good world of mouth . Lets hope they keep it up .
When I was playing the beta I was thinking someones finally getting it right . Even if it is a little generic it plays well and its fun . Thats all I ask for in a game .
