I tried out the trial a couple weeks ago. I would say that it seems like a pretty fun game. Lots of freedom in what you do with your skills and whatnot. I chose a fighter but I was able to level my magic skills. The tutorial was pretty good at explaining everything. You can make your own skills and modify them, which I thought was pretty cool. Crafting seems pretty in depth as well. Graphically the game seems a tad old and the interace took me a bit to get used to. I would have probably kept playing it but there are too many other games that are holding my interest at the moment. I did not get far enough in the game and I am sure a long time player can give you the lowdown. The population was a tad low but maybe now they are going freemium (they are basically extended their already long trial) they will get some more players.
The game was a bitch to install for me though. Couldn't patch the damn game for a couple days and finally had to get help from their tech forums. Their tech mod over there had to post some files for me that finally worked. So if you have the same problem I did, which it seems quite a few did, just check out their official tech forums. Beyond that, I would say it's worth a shot, considering it is free to download and sign up for an account.

Interesting to hear that you had update problems, so did I, but I'm afraid I haven't as much pastience as you. I just uninstalled and let it go. If they can't be bothered to put up a trial that works, I can't be bothered to play it.
That said, I did give this game a couple of weeks of a try-out about 18 months ago and your comments are fairly much on the money. It has got some interesting features and it's quirky for a while, but the population is low, particularly in low levels, and it eventually struck me as a bit of a waste of time really.
You can die from gathering crafting materials. Literally, the act of gathering can KILL you. Stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life. Not to mention how ridiculously grindy it is, and how mobs usually roam about in packs that instantly swarm and kill you. The UI is also a miserable pile of failure.
The world and community are the only things that make this game worth playing, IMHO.

/Agreed. It's ridiculously easy to die in this game...

I have to disagree but I imagine it's because I'm one of those playes who prefers more danger in my games.
My thougth is that if you are gathering dangrous materials then there should be a chance of damage or even death.
I see this as a plus.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Anyone know how much of a hinderence the 125 skill limit will be? What will the limit prevent me from doing?
I'm 100% fine with paying a sub. I just want to be able to play the game for a few months to know if i want to stick around long enough to sub. I play other mmo's so subbing right off the bat isn't that great of an idea for me.

Oh I agree, if you're collecting dangerous materials then that fact should absolutely present itself in some form or another. The thing is, you can die from gathering stuff like tree sap in the starting areas. I think that's bit excessive. My jaw pretty much hit the floor when it happened. 'Death by tree sap', while funny (not at the time), is incredibly idiotic. Again, IMHO.

ah, but remember, there are poisonous plants in the world (the real world) and though in our world you won't find many people dying from them unless you ingest them, this is an alien world where I can easily conceive a plant having extremely dangerous qualities if one is not skilled at extracting it.
It's a good lesson to learn in a noob area.
But again, my taste leans toward having a far more dangerous world than most games offer.

125 would definitely allow you to see past the starting areas. The skill cap is 250, so it's half way there. Plenty of opportunities to specialize by 125, iirc. And since you can go down each branch of the major skill areas and take each to 125, it would actually take a ahile to hit the 125 limit in all of permutations of melee, magic, crafting and foraging.
I just started up again once I saw the "Freemium" annoucnement, and there are a few people in the starter area, Silan. Not a lot, but hopefully more will try it now.
I really like Ryzom, myself. My biggest complaint was the population was completely dead...hopefully free to play fixes it.
I love how the environment changes (seasons), how animals migrate, carnivores attack herbivores...herbivores interact with you. Its an amazing world.
Game is grindy, but crafting is rather good. Problem with crafting is a lack of variety of items (in terms of looks), plus side is the stats and stuff on the item vastly differ from each other.
Some dislike harvesting, but I like the danger to it. You actually need to think to harvest, not "lol click click click"...you get a lot of different harvesting abilities that do different things.
Ryzom is awesome for group play, I soloed a bit, and it was doable just much harder.
I won't comment on the community, because things change in free to play games...but it seemed a bit elitist, one complaint and they yell "GO BACK TO WOW"...but that happens in a lot of MMOs.

I've just started this one and am blogging about it for my Sandbox Challenge series. So far it seems like a nice little sandbox but I'm only 7 hours into it. First post out tomorrow w/updates weekly. Cheers all.
Keep in mind that the tutorial island is completely different than the rest of the game. It's like playing a modern sandbox game with quests that explain the lore.
Leaving for the mainland though is like stepping back in time to a more primitive game. It's heavily grindbased with extremely aggressive mobs.
Most old-time players are very nice and helpful. It's hard to do things on your own, so you'll have to cultivate some friendships.
Never criticize a "sandbox" game on mmorpg.com. You will be drowned in a wave of kool-aid drinking fanbois.

Good things:
1) Nice fiction"natural"world enviroment
2) Excellent Crafting
3) Great community
4)Interesting skill/spell use and custom creation
5) Very deep lore, perfect for heavy roleplayers
Bad things:
1)Too much "nature" in the world and hubs have bad design
2)Poor graphic performance
3)Low population
4)Lore is way too complicated and deep , even for light RPers
5) UI is simply...tragic
6) There should/could be more in-game music

hasnt this game been P2P then it went F2P for a while I guess at somepoint it went back to P2P now its going F2p again?!?
It's going freemium on march 9th basically ....a very extended trial where you can get 125 skill in your crap.
Hmm... mixed reviews I may check this out been looking around for a decent free sandboxy mmo to take up my time

Thanks. I'm almost done the starter area now. The community seems very friendly, and quite helpful so I'm looking forward to seeing what's ahead.
