Schooling

A very odd question, yet one that has been seen before.

Were I to want to change vocations and get into game design, where/what should I do to begin? Should I enlist in a school such as ITT tech, or what have you, to learn? Or should I just get a C++ book and begin self-learning code and its applications? Both?

Thanks!

    Game design degrees are worthless.

An IT position managing networks is a good start if you're thinking about a 2 year.

Game design-type degrees are only worth something if you get a Masters or better in the field, preferrably from a quality school.  I have a good high-school buddy in the businees and it took him years of advanced education to get a job for a major developer.

The other thing, many large games have "teams" of people.  This means not one person does everything.  In fact, games that are smaller, often only have one or two designers but often don't do well either - like a small business going out of business.  The "Minecrafts" out there are the exception, not the rule.

You'de more than likely end up learning one skill-set and become a master of that skill - graphic artist, 3d modeling, engine design, and anything in between - while earning a degree in the field.
