Hello fellow mmorpgers
I figured I should look to the experienced to decide which MMO to go to. The more popular ones I've played aren't holding my attention much.
UO was my first mmo and I absolutely loved it pre-trammel
Tried Eve Online couldn't get into it, the leveling offline thing turned me off.
Bought the hype into AoC, pretty game but quite boring
Played WoW off and on for a long time. I think part of WoW's success is that so many friends and family can jump into it. But WoW lacks in a lot of other mmo areas.
Anyhow here's what I'm looking for, tell me if this game exists yet:
I like the fantasy/medieval games
I like pvp with some kind of a death penalty. I don't like instanced pvp. I like world pvp, unrestricted, except maybe in preselected safe zones/cities.
I like class diversity and character diversity. The more ways to customize your character the better. I want to feel like I'm molding my character and not the company that made it. I'd prefer class diversity over game balance hoping it's at least somewhat balanced.
I like the ideas of housing, crafting, and being able to build things in game, similar to UO and far away from WoW clicking on nodes.
I don't mind if the game is factionbased or guildbased
No item mall games for me
I don't want a game that revolves around instancing. The more open, the more immersive.
I want a game with an endgame that shines, so there's always something to look forward to, always something to do
I dont mind grinding for levels
Storylines and lore aren't that important to me, graphics don't have to be great either.
So...what do you suggest? Do you know a game that fits this criteria? I want to check it out, thanks for reading.

Its not released yet, but ArcheAge sounds like a game you'd like if you haven't looked into it yet.
Don't you love it when people's only suggestions are games in development?
Unfortunately I can't recommend a game myself. That death penalty narrows your choices considerably these days.
That would be The Chronicles of Spellborn. Ohh wait they shut it down, because people asks for something, but when it comes out they don't play it ... Are you sure u want that ?
Didn't that game shut down because the developers went bankrupt and Acclaim was a very crappy publisher?
Rift looks a little different and Guild Wars 2 has big plans. Here is an excellent review that might be able to pin point the game you are looking for: bestmmogame.com Here the games are categorized more properly and the write ups are to the point.
I have got your game!!!!! I was in your same boat. Xsyon. Looked at the game at first and i was like what the hell is this thing. But i took a chance. And its the BEST Chance i have took in a long time. Think UO meets Minecraft. I have been in the beta for about a month now and its great. So take it from an old school mmo player. UO was my fav until EA screwed it.
But if you get Xsyon now you get 2 months free. And the game is $40. And god knows you have had to waste more money trying to find the right game. So check it out, just read the features.

Wouldn't developers going bankrupt be a DIRECT result of not enough people playing it though?
With all you've mentioned you'll be luck y to find anything that fits all of what you want m8, Pre-NGE SWG had it all but that s gone. Thinking over all the games i've been looking at recently (i too am looking for something, except i'm just wanting a time passer till SW:TOR) back on track though the only thing that jumps to mind is Mortal Online, it doesn't include everything your looking for but then like i said earlier, you won't find anything with everything your lookign for anymore.
I think your wish list cannot be satisfied by any particular game in the market currently unless you are prepared to sacrifice a few things on it. Most theme park games of today don't incorporate some of your desires (e.g. building things in game, open world pvp, class diversity). Going out on a limb you would seem to be someone who prioritises (a) open world pvp with a death penalty, (b) character diversity (c) meaningful crafting, and (d) a minimal instanced world.
Based on my assumptions of your top desires then, I would say Eve contains the best open world and meaningful pvp of any game (including the loss of a LOT of money if your expensive ship gets blown up) and if you get yourself into a 0.0 alliance and live in nullsec you will pvp as a matter of your daily life in the game. You could also choose a life of piracy and actively chase pvp opportunities. Eve would also offer the ability to make stuff in the game world. It is also entirely non-instanced. The only downer is that it is not a fantasy/medieval game. I know you said you didn't like the "offline" levelling but if that's your only reason for disliking Eve then I would suggest you give it another go because of what it will offer you. If you do remember, though, that Eve is a slow burn game for the patient player so it may take time and investment before you get what you want out of the game. The sandbox nature too require a lot of self motivation to set your own goals and pursue them.
Trying to come up with a fantasy/medieval alternative that ticks your boxes is admittedly tough. If it wasn't in its death throes I would have suggested Vanguard although it probably wouldn't have delivered on the pvp front for you. There is also Rift which you might enjoy in part satisfaction of your desires, although pvp is largely instanced like in WoW, death isn't particularly meaningful and you can't craft more than the usual weapons, armour, pots etc. It does have the best character diversity of any fanrtasy/medieval game however with the soul class system offering many way to play and easy role changes at any moment (you can have a melee dps build, tank build, healing build etc. and swap at the click of a button).
Hope that helps.
What I heard was that they went bankrupt before the game released so Acclaim picked up to game to make it into a F2P MMO. Acclaim never did anything with the game but kept it in a perpetual "open beta" release then they sold the game to somebody when they went under, who then sold the game to someone else.
Thanks for replies, cept for that idiot Tyrantas.
you can try xsyon, wurm on pvp server, haven & hearth or darkfall
