Everything coming out or that has been out, including the F2Ps, are all literally WoW clones.
I have been playing MMOs since Ragnarok Online, and nothing has given me the memories that Final Fantasy XI did, which was a clone off EQ. By the way, if anyone in here comes mentioning DAOC, that game sucked big time.
Now with all that said, I picked up Oblivion again for some odd reason, modded it, then went onto Dragon Age: Origins and started modding it and the more and more I play those games.....
Well, I realized, MMORPGs REALLY suck gameplay wise =/
Damn, took me a long time, I suppose the only reason why I ever stuck around was for friends.

I hear ya. Been through the same sine wave. I decided I would only play call of duty til sw:tor. maybe things may change after sw:tor. maybe not
Xsyon, Earthrise, Black Prophecy, GW2, ArcheAge, Firefall, Planetside Next, even a DCUO aren't WoW clones.
If you find that no MMORPG around is fun to you anymore, you might just be burnt out on the genre or certain gameplay features that are connected with MMORPG's.
Here's the thing: if you don't enjoy MMORPG's anymore or even hate them, you don't have to play MMORPG's. Like with everything, it's good to step back from it for a longer period of time, do other stuff that's more enjoyable, and check back on a later date to see if you still feel the same towards all MMO's.
The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:

I haven't been playing them either. Just free trials or betas. SC2 is fun. Doing the CS:S thing too. If Monster Hunter Freedom Online was available in english in NA i'd probably play that but its only in Japan or something... you can play but its in japanese i think. Just waiting for a mmo that takes player skill i guess. Played Ryzom today that game is cool. f2p now. breaks from MMOs are okay. maybe try the kind of stuff which got you into gaming in the first place?
die.
I stopped SC2 in November because I had to focus on school. I was in the world's top 1000 along, and recently played a little bit and immediately hit Masters.
I've always hated Monster Hunter <_<
But yeah, MMOs are skill-less pieces of garbage right now. I seriously blame StarCraft 2. Every since I started that game in phase 1 beta, I just started hating more and more on MMOs because I seriously believe they make you stupid.
Oblivion is a single player wow clone
I can't take this thread you made serious, so normal answer or even slighstest discussion becouse of what you said here is not worth to much of my time and don't wanne waste your time eather why for quality answer or discussion, this topic to low quality in my humble opinion.
Games played:AC1-Darktide'99-2000-AC2-Darktide/dawnsong2003-2005,Lineage2-2005-2006 and now Darkfall-2009.....
In between WoW few months AoC few months and some f2p also all very short few weeks.
Are you the OP but different name?
Oh wait........:P

I don't hate MMORPGs per say, but I am very much starting to hate the direction they're going.
I came to the genre because I liked the idea of having a virtual world to live and explore in. However, since WoW arrived on the scene, it's success has moved the genre away from this model. Even back when I was playing Vanilla WoW, I never really felt like I was being railroaded the way I do when playing the current version of the game or it's many knockoffs. Over time I has become less about a living, breathing, world and more about running the player on rails from one attraction to the next.
Maybe it's simply a case of rose-colored glasses, but looking back at vanilla WoW I can't see how the gameplay was terribly different than it is now. Yet, at the time, I didn't feel like I was being guided along a path - I felt that the world was wide open, that I could do basically what I wanted. Perhaps part of the reason why I haven't played Cata is because I'm afraid of the answer it may give me - that WoW and the genre are going where they need to, but it's my own expectations that can no longer be satisfied.
There are plenty of MMOs out there that'll give you the sense of 'virtual world' if you more into the sandboxy type gameplay.
EVE, Mortal Online, Ryzom, Darkfall etc
To the OP, if a friend said 'i hate FPS now since everything is a COD:Black Ops clone' what would you say?

Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
Not really. I love Mmos. They are pretty fun
What it gets on my nerves are the "fanboys" and the community some Mmos have.
Only minority wants a world to explore no hold hands building slowly a character and have real adventures and most developers and publishers know this so its all tailor made for those who wanne rush through mmo's with alot fluff limited freedom and all instanced for solo or small groups so your in weeks at end game and have all the top gear you want.
People realy can't enjoy a wonderfull world where you actually have to think what your doing and explore with greta adventure, so you get WoW-TOR-GW-RIFT-AoC-WAR mmorpgs im affraid for next 10 years i think there even more simplified.

If things go according to Richard Garriott's plans, then things will be simplified to someting inbetween farmville and cityville.
Maybe it's good for business... I know a guy that didn't want to play WoW because he thought it was too complicated.
Yeah man im on a MMO burn out myself.. Passed up DCUO hopeing for Rift, then i played Rifts beta and got bored so i decided to pass on that.. Only other game that i have sub too is EvE and even then i really only find myself logging into update skills..
So pretty much jus been streaming anime + playing Star Craft II, especially since both those things are free.. I'll wait for SWTOR, by then ill have a few months (maybe even a year) of no MMORPG gameing and the genre might feel fresh to me.
Currently Playing:
Rift + Starcraft II + Gears Of War 3 Beta
I'm kinda bored. No active subscriptions at the moment but I am playing STO because I have a lifetime membership and because it's something to do. Sometimes it's fun.
I've been dabbling in Last Chaos and liking it. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a grinder, but the gear system is done quite well.
90% of the population on these forums hates MMORPGs. They just haven't come to terms with it yet.
Miserable bastards....All of you!
Joined 2004 - I can't believe I've been a MMORPG.com member for 20 years! Get off my lawn!
Playing Rift, DCU:O, EvE and rarely World of Tanks.
Heh.
Blame it on Everquest.
The two biggest MMOs when this whole thing started were Ultima Online and Everquest.
UO, the better game, was difficult and harsh (making the "winning" feeling of it that much more rewarding). Everquest was easy and created purely to addict the consumer (a treadmill game).
All the low lives became addicted to Everquest and made it the more profitable game. Blizzard saw this and modeled its game after EQ and not UO.
Thus, EVERY high budget game has done the same.
Until a company with a large budget mimics UO's innovation - MMOs will always suck and cater mainly to low lives who are easily addicted to leveling their characters and don't care about actual gameplay or the potential that MMOs can have.
I don't remember Uo being harsh.
Playing Rift 2 days a out of the week but i spend more of my free gaming time on the xbox 360.
Design a sandbox that isn't such a chore and we wouldn't be seeing the genre moving in the direction it is. No one is willing to make a sandbox game that isn't a grindy second job that punishes you for every single mistake you make and punishes you for not being hardcore.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
Not'chyet...
And MMo's are what they are.
And let's be honest MMO's as well as other PC games won't change radically until software code (aka programming) runs parallel with hardware. Plus remember there is a bus load more of code in MMO's than standard PC games.
So basically don't anticipate "this is the greatest thing since sliced bread" gaming for at least 8-10 years down the road. Perhaps longer.
If the current trend continues, I don't see myself playing mmos anymore in the upcoming years.
At the moment EQ1 keeps me busy, along with several single player rpgs, and of course Monster Hunter Tri
