Best MMORPGs for crafters

I've played a fairly broad selection of MMORPGs over the years (UO, EQ, SB, SWG, DAoC), and I've found that the thing I love most is crafting.  I love adventuring, too, and PvP on occasion, as well as RPing with a good group, but due to my schedule, I have become a fan of soloing more than grouping, and I really enjoy spending a large chunk of that soloing time crafting.

Obviously, some of the games I've played aren't the greatest home for a crafter-at-heart.  I am currently playing DAoC, and well...crafting is a sideline, not a true full-time profession.  I enjoy the game, but I'm not playing it as I would like to, as it's not really built for that.

I am really itching to craft, and I'm not sure where to go.  I've been following a few upcoming games, but none have really encouraged me regarding their crafting systems, except Wish.  (*cry*)   DDO looks like it will be fun, but not for crafting.  Dark and Light intrigued me for a time, but I am not sold on it.   Perhaps I'm not looking at the right games.

My question:  Which upcoming MMORPGs do you think a craftswoman should consider?  And are there any current games that might be worth a look?  (Please exclude EQ2.  I really don't want to play another Sony/Verant offering, for various reasons.)  I am more interested in fantasy than sci-fi, but I don't rule out  sci-fi titles.  I just want a stable game with a mature element to be found somewhere it its community and a development team that has its head on straight, with tolerable graphics and an extensive crafting system where crafting is a viable profession, which is fun in the long-term.  "Just."  ;)  Am I searching for a Grail that doesn't exist and won't in the forseeable future?

Thanks in advance for any input.  :)

Hands down the best crafting game I have played is Horizons.  But be warned that the rest of Horizon's is awful.  Combat is beyond terrible.  Horizon's is essentially a crafting only game.  But it is very good at what it does.  Some of the highlight's of Horizon's crafting is building, harvesting, wearable crafting armor and the ability to switch between crafting professions.

In regards to upcoming games Vanguard looks to be the best crafting game.  Or at least it places the greatest emphasis on crafting.  Here is a link to learn more.

I think it's understood that it's a fight between SWG and Ryzom at this point.

Horizons: I think having crafting be the main element worth exploring in the game would be nearly as bad to me as having the crafting element lacking.

SWG: I played it for a year. The crafting was fun. The adventuring was fine. But I led a guild and was a mayor...hence I ended up playing the game for others, dropping my crafting, never leaving the City Hall...and the game doesn't feel like SW to me. Hence, I no longer play. ;)

Vanguard looks very promising! I will definitely give it a closer look.

Saga of Ryzom is another I know very little about. I'll give it a look, too.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe one of the main developers from Verant (actually, maybe more than one) is on the development team for Vanguard.
  • star wars galaxies hands down beats any other mmo in crafting. Most of the best items are player crafted and you can tell the better crafters apart from eachother through this game. It is easily the best game for crafters.

Yes and no.  Vanguard is being made by Brad Mcquaid and many otehrs who made the EQ1 not EQ2.

Yes Brad is 1 of the major devs from Verant.  There is no no part on the previous statement,  however, the original guy who say yes and no prolly meant that many persons from Verant are not in Vanguard(or Sigil).

I am waiting to pass judgment on Vanguard, if I need to raid(or tradeskill, maybe, I am not all that extremist on the tradeskill, but I am not inclined to believe I will enjoy it, not even after reading their promises) in this game, I will not even try it.  So their specific servers rules better be explicit about the ''NO RAIDING'' on some, yet need all the best group tools, having a server with less group uberness is not an option I will accept...I am a spoiled customer.  image

The no part is Vanguard is made up of developers from EQ1 not EQ2 as you implied in your post.

Like it or not, Horizons has the greatest crafting system of any mmorpg out there today. I'd consider trying it.
