There's always that one place in the games we play that is "just right" for hanging out in. In the Community Spotlight this week, Mike Bitton chose a thread on exactly that topic. Weigh in with your favorite MMO cities in the MMORPG.com Staff Blog thread or in the original thread on the forum.
These were the memorable cities I encountered:
- Kelethin (EQ): combined with the typical Kelethin music, this is one of the MMO cities that stuck with me in all the MMO years that followed
- Pandaemonium (Aion): it's large, and has a high fantasy atmosphere without a doubt.
- Tarantia (AoC): take all the areas together, and there's no denying that Tarantia does a good job giving the impression of a thriving, lively Hyborian city where a lot of adventure happens
- Stormwind (WoW): when I first started playing WoW, Stormwind managed to capture perfectly the atmosphere of WC3 for me, like I would've pictured WC3 to be if it was made into an MMO. Good memories.

thais ( tibia ) when i first came online, i chose this city becuase the attitude of players were friendly and helpful. fyi no way can u lure a giant spider to thias at all .
Jueno (FFXI) just getting to the city as a low level, with no chocobo, was an epic adventure in itself. Since hometown cities Auction house were not linked together, Jueno was where most items were sold. Also the city was broken down into 4 seperate zones where certain people would hangout. The JP's on the top zone (Ru'lude gardens) while NA's would hang in Lower Jueno. Later on through the years Upper Jueno would be where bazaars afk'd. And now Port Jueno is the gathering spot for many activities, such as Abyssea, Limbus, BCNM, KSNM.
Yeah, Jueno should have been there. Hell, I never played FFXI, and I know this town by its sole reputation of "awesome and unbelievable hard trip to reach it the first time", and its interest in terms of re-joining races in the game. When I read the poll title I immediately thought of Jueno. Let me state again that I never played that game. That must mean something.
Any dark, dreary, almost horror themed cities you guys know? I haven't really seen any yet, as far as I can recall.
I still think Hunter's Village (Lineage II) is my best ever. The whole atmosphere (graphically and ambient music) of it makes you really thing you're in a special place near to a magical forest.
Right? I've been to every one of those cities...
Especially Pandaemonium is nowhere near a lively city, it's basically one square, no appartment houses and a lot of meaningless shops, no real streets....
Stormwind is okayish I guess, at least it has the infrastructure of a city, its color coded quarters and complete lack of different social areas (like noble district, slums, etc...) makes it lacking.
Tarantia is also par, featuring common/noble district, and old tarantia. But it's also very iconic, almost artificially iconic and has almost no backalleys.
But these cities are absolutely NOT coming to my mind if I want to recall the best cities. New Targonor or Altdorf, or Inevitable City devastate all the above cities.
No clue why those were not on the list...
