So, it looks like either Trion's database has been compromised or a major fansite (Allakhazam) is filled with keyloggers. I'm currently scanning my PC, but I have to warn this site to watch the fuck out. If you notice your cash drop rapidly inbetween sessions ( I lost 40 plat ), then you've probably been hacked.

If nothing else, it lets you know that Rift is a very popular game. :-(
A friend of mine lost a bunch of plat. Trion is saying that most of the accounts they've come across (80%) have been due to key loggers.
Do you run your web browser with administrator privileges? Do you allow active scripting and flash animations to load automatically? All you have to do is visit a website that displays banner ads. Even a reputable website can display a malware banner ad from an advertising company that they have a contract with. It's not even the advertising company that's trying to get you, it's the hackers who have managed to pass themselves off as a legitimate business, even fronting a significant money to the advertising company to pay for the service.
Run your browser with restricted user permissions. I would suggest logging in with restricted user permissions, but then it gets to be a pain to update your games...it's safer, but you have to do more work to use your machine. If you have Mozilla, run 'No Script' and 'Flash Block'. This is in addition to regular system scans for regular old viruses and trojans.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I'm sure some were key loggers, however, Trion has no possible way to determine how a login was obtained so the 80% figure it completely PR.

Simple question I aske everyone: The same e-mail you use for Rift. Do you get those Blizzard
or Rift phishing e-mails in your spam folder?
If so then that e-mail is compromised and you are a target.
Not gotten any emails and I do run Firefox + Adblock + NoScript with Microsoft Security Essentials. Really, my PC should be a fortress of god damn safety.
That really sucks, I hope the peoples passwords are different ingame then they are for account details. Credit card info, etc.
That is a shame, I gave up WoW on the second hack to avoid going through the process of getting it fixed again. Now, Rift is getting hacked? Where have you gotten your information, not that I question it, only to assure that I do not drop good money on top of bad.
ok now there is a bug. Let me put it like this "conspiracy theory bug" that one of the files in the patch was corrupted for "some people" and it caused this.
Here is what you do. If you sure without a shadow of a doubt and have checked every little detail and changed your password, then open a ticket to Trion and select "hacked account". They will fix it for you and basically roll your account back to et you playing again.
Are these the people that use the same account name and password for world of warcraft?

I saw one guy claiming it took a hacker 30 seconds to clear all his plat. Now this screams
some type of bug and unless I am physically at his computer how do I know he did not try and
modify the client on his end and broke the thing?
Trion did fix his gripe pretty fast.
Just be smart, and safe when browsing the internetl It's not as bad as some are making it out to be, there have been a relatively small number of complaints about this in reality.
This made me LOL......
Really, you should probably educate your self a bit more on the pitfalls of Windows if you truly think your practices make your computer a "fortress of safety".
Also, if using Firefox (why wouldn't you be??) install ad-blocker and noscript addons, as well as ensuring all your malware and antivirus software is up-to-date.
We still don't know for sure how people are getting their accounts compromised, but its likely that they have tied the same email address to their Blizzard/ fan-sites as well as Trion's account management.
Sounds more like a bugged patch to me and not hacked clients.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I was thinking that many people may have compromised their account info during the months of beta test.
Registering on various sites to be eligible for beta key, or registering for competitions anywhere to win a key.
And when Rift came live, they used the same logins for actual live account.
Hackers just had to wait during the beta and first weeks of live and then collect what they want.
"WINDOWS IS UNSAFE WHEEWAWHEEWAW"
About the only thing safer is Linux. If any of you says Apple, you're an idiot. Apple has backdoors, they're just not exploited because most people cannot be arsed.
Pretty much this, phishing, is the number one cause.
Additionally, any instances of account breaches due to keyloggers are due to people downloading 3rd party damage parsers, or visiting rift fan-sites with infected banner ads. In other words, don't download 3rd party programs that aren't approved explicitly by Trion, and run an ad blocker and/or a script blocker for your web browser.
I will put 5$ on people registering for Beta keys. It is logical right? Use the same e-mail for your beta key to be delivered that you plan on registering with Rift.
Now I gave mine to Trion directly through their formal registration so I know mine is safe unless they get hacked *crosses fingers**
The forum reports regarding compromised accounts started with a trickle in beta that exploded during the last week. One common element between the hacked account reports presented in forum is significant plat loss... The charcter currency poor guys aren't reporting hacks.
It reminds me of what happened with SOE when some of their staff started targeting wealthy players and selling gold. I am not saying that is what's happening here though. Likely just a coincidence created by those with the most loss being the most likely to scream foul with a post.
I did have a few rejected download attempts with an ad at the zam soul builder a week back.
Never had any trouble surfing the Rift official forums. I kept my account email hidden there,.
I was leery of downloading any un-official ad ons.
I was never hacked.
However, I am not inclined to think everyone with a hacked account for the game is just stupid, gold buying, porn surfers, that share accounts with untrustworthy strangers.... Something is up.
You answered your own question. I highlighted it in red for you.
Just in case I'm reading that wrong, I was never hacked personally.
The zam site may be one source. But I am not sure it is the only source...
I have been getting those e-mails for years now. I have never been keylogged or had my account stolen in any way.
Heck I use free AVG anti-virus software, and that is it. I don't have some super network of virus protection.
Alls it takes is smart internet surfing. Be smart in what you open, what links you click, and what what files you choose to accept.
In 12 years I have never been hacked or lost an account. (Granted me saying this is probably going to curse me, or have someone personally target me now since I am bragging)
Just be careful people.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.
In the hacker contest a couple days ago...Safari and OSX got hacked in 5 seconds.
Sorry for Zam, but the one or two ads that were Malware on their site have screwed them in ad revenue. Noone in their right mind is going to whitelist their ads.
If i don't say it someone else will , STOP playing Theme Park MMOs!!!
Thay are bad for your health and they are not fun anymore...
I am having lots of fun! I'll ride around on my 2 tailed fox thing with horns and damn wel enjoy it. Thank you very much!
