General: Shadow Cities: Like Nothing Ever Seen

At last week's GDC, MMORPG.com columnist Drew Wood met with the founders of Grey Area. Mikko Hämäläinen and Ville Vesterinen are working with their team to make an iOS MMO unlike anything you've ever seen before. Called Shadow Cities, the game is called a "location-based MMO". You need to read this one, folks. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Literally, this is taking place in your backyard and is, again literally, a Global battle. If you are in San Francisco, for example, and you have friends in Glasgow, Scotland, you could build a Beacon in Union Square and your Scottish friends could jump through the Beacon and join you in the fight for Union Square, and vice-versa. Your ultimate goal is to conquer neighborhoods in the name of your chosen faction.

That sounds like a pretty interesting game.  I love the "Drive-by casting" bit!

    Sadly I don't have such a device :(

Yes, please port it to Android.  It might be fun to mess with on a rainy day.

It's always fun to have something like this, via the touch of a finger. I'm rather interested, thanks for sharing!

Looks cool I'm afraid I'll get kicked out if I try. Happened with LARP, they said I hit too hard!! Freaking padded PVC weapons??!! isn't that the point?

  • Parallel Kingdom has been up and running on iOS and Android for a while now, so Shadow Cities definitely isn't the first but I like the look of it a little more.  PK is pretty much just google maps with icons stuck on top of it.

Sounds like fun but I'm not a cell phone person.  Have fun you all.

Overall sounds pretty cool. I can definately see this sort of game genre ramping up quickly with the advancement of smart phone generations. Afterall smartphones are nothing more than small mobile computers with internet access that can easily communitcate with other people. As these phones get more powerfull the games will become richer.

Highly dull game actually after playing few times. There is other games available that do much better job using location base.

Playing the game and having a lot of fun.. The devs are still planning on adding a lot of stuff but it's still already pretty addictive.. The community is great (at least on the animators side).. Great game...

... But why isn't it in the Game List.. ?

Innovative using the GPS function. The concept does not grab me of conquering locales but interested in how it pans out.

Released in App Store today in US. Interested to hear ppl's remarks?

Good effort on the devs for being innovative & gl !
