Hello all,
As we speak im playing Darkfall, but sort of want to give Rift a try for some reason. I tend to like a large game with exploration, like DF,SWG or Vanguard so i just dont know if it will fit me. Cause i cant seem to make up my mind perhaps i could ask a few questions.
Any input would be appreciated!

There is a lot to explore and artifacts make it worth while. You can climb mountains on your mount and find artifacts way off the beaten path.. I sometimes just run around and look for them..gives you a reason to not just teleport everywhere once you have them.
There are also some quests that you won't be able to find unless you re-visit places you've already gone through, or explore places that normal quests won't take you to. I found that pretty cool. Keep in mind that Darkfall and Rift are drastically different games. I actually prefer Darkfalls sandbox style, but despise it's lack of directions and biased towards it's veteran players.
The game world is pretty small, relative to WoW or especially Darkfall. However, there's very little empty space. Instead of running for a couple minutes and running into something that you need to deal with, you run 30 seconds to a minute. There is plenty of exploration time-wise, but not physical size wise. If that makes sense. Part of the exploration would be artifact collecting. Those little shinies are everywhere and collecting them gets you...well...something. I'm not sure what you get to be honest. But they are shiny.
I have not run into any invisible walls and very few unclimbable mountains. Your mount can jump-climb a very steep incline. They are all somehow related to geckos.
If you are the kind of person who wants to have uninterrupted quest time, then you'll probably get angry at the invasions. They will disrupt your questing, going so far as to chase you down and kill you if they notice you. There is very little safe space in this game. However, if you like distractions and doing a variety of things then the rifts and invasions will probably be a lot of fun.

Rift is not a sandbox mmo (and I assume you are looking for one) -- it takes a lot of the common elements from major MMOs like WOW or Warhammer. Gameplay wise content is polished to a very high degree -- e.g. the rift system is very much like the Warhammer public quests but much more dynamic and better implemented into the game world and lore etc.
Rift -- for me -- is a very fun experience and I enjoy it a lot at the moment -- but if you prefere open world sandbox games it is not what you are looking for.
You can very easily avoid most invasion forces, you just can't stand in the middle of the road and go AFK during said invasion. The only time that I've ever lost quest time during Rift so far is taking back a NPC questing hub from the attackers. And there are always players around to re-capture it within a few minutes. To clarify, Rifts do not spawn in major quest areas. They generally spawn in minor quest areas (kill x boars) and invasions stick to roads and NPC quest hubs.
I'd think of it this way. Where you'll lose the open world FFA PvP, you'll gain open world dynamic PvE and faction PvP that can, at times, be just as dangerous. Granted, mob invasions aren't controlled by humans. But, they can still roll your face if you aren't paying attention.
Oh yeah, if you're paying attention you can avoid the elites. They won't get into the main city either (as far as I know). Interrupted questing is the one actual complaint that I've heard from people I've played with though. I put it down more to a person being very focused on doing one thing at a time. If you are that kind of person, it'll probably bother you.
Also, the other poster is correct - Rift is not a sandbox game. You can roll on a FFA PvP server if you want, but you won't get the other player's loot. You can take over one of their quest hubs though. :-) But it's not a sandbox.

Thanks for all the info!
Im really looking forward to ArchAge if it comes out in the US but im needing something besides DF till that day happens. Im going to keep looking into rift to possibly kill some time.

Have you looked into Eve. Seems a little funky at first but it's like sushi, an acquired taste that you can't get enough of once you're turned on to it.
I tried it twice actually. I just can get into it for some reason. It seems quite popular, just not for me i guess..

There seems plenty to do so far. As far as the size of the world is concerned the world map is centered around the west coast of one continent so there is tons of room for expansion as the game grows.
I knew what it was going to be like. I was bored, so I bought it and only played for 2 days. It would have been worth it if I was willing to play the free 30 days. That's how sad are mmos right now, went from years of game play to HOPING to get 30 days out of it. lol
I think there's enough information out there to make a choice to buy or not.
Yah I was on the same boat. It felt like the best game that I wasn't playing. Once you get into an active Corp and get involved in some PvP it completely changes the game.
I just made it out to null sec (0.0) and man the game is completely different down here. Constant danger, adrenaline - You have to be ready to defend your sovereignty. Intel channels, scouting, lots of fleets etc.
If you decide to give the game another go, join Eve University off the bat. They teach you a lot of the game including PvP which is very useful. Lots of good Corps will be more than happy to receive you after Eve Uni as well as there being plenty of people to fleet with in Eve Uni even if it's for simple missions. Playing with other people makes this game so much better.
My gf might be dragging me into Rift. I played the beta and the game definitely seems like it has potential. The combat seemed kind of clunky to me and bland, but maybe I'm just bored of the 'traditional' combat system.
Small world with very little in the way of exploration compared to something like Darkfall. If that is what you really want in a game I wouldn't bother with Rift, there are other reasons to play it but not that.
You can avoid them but the mob density is just obnoxious and mobs attack even if they are a lot lower level than you and knock you off your mount as well, so traveling outside of the roads is just annoying in general.
