Animations in RIFT are simply unacceptable to me. This is the first time since WAR where I've sat down and wondered why the combat feels clunky, before noticeing that the animations are cheap-looking. It's sad too, because beneath that is a game with a great class system, and one that I personally prefer over other fantasy MMOs.
Gameplay is everything, and if a game doesn't have combat that feels right, it doesn't stand a chance. My 2 cents.

animations are kind of hit and miss in this game
^
Actually, you're right. Some of the casting animations, for example, are fantastic. Some of the mounts also move well, which I noted as positive. However, running, jumping, meleeing, and more is just funky! It hurts the experience...
not trying to bash you or trolling....
but you have in your sign WoW as playing and RIFT as retired already....
Me, as a non-rift player would never give you too much credit for anything related to Rift. It seems you are just trying to call negativity towards the game.
edit: but as i played the beta, i agree that some animations are not good enough, but its not THAT bad... it is something to be improved though.
Combat animations are the weakest part of Rift for me. I found out it also depends on classes. For some souls they were fine to me though not exceptionnal, for others they just turned me down from playing the soul.
Check my blog on mmorpg.com.
Some casters do have fairly good casting animations. It's melee really that gets the shaft. Even then, dual wield does alright sometimes. Sword & Board and 2handed weapons (particularly warrior) left something to be desired. That's just my 2 cents pre lvl 20.
I honestly didn't notice any problems at all with the animations. I don't really see them as being amazing, but they aren't bad by any means in my opinion.
The combat/melee animation looks kinda .... lackluster
i really think animation is the weakest link in RIFT, they are just bad compare to other aspect of the game
Sadly that's true. I mean they ain't horrendous, but if you compare them to those in games such as Dragonage Origins...
Still: as long as in MMORPGs it is possible that a house-sized giant hits a human with a 100 ton hammer, and the human simply stands there as if nothing happened, you can't talk about great animations in any case. There is just not enough interaction. Apart from a slight knockback at times or a dodging motions, there is simply not enough going on.
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)
I believe it's the same engine as Warhammer. I agree with you, something about it just does not feel fluent. However in time if they tweak the engine a little bit this could be resolved. I think this is something that more experienced mmo players notice after playing on many different engines, as long as the content is there, I can deal but it is a speedbumb for me and does slightly take away from the game a bit.
actually the OP is right about some animations being weak and clunky, but hey.... i havent seen a perfect game since i was born.... rift have a lot of good things that trion maybe use them to hide some of the weak mechanics like melee animations.... too bad it is not working and most ppl notice it right away.....
I bought RIFT four days ago, quit yesterday and went back to WoW for my first time since early December. I give major props to RIFT, as in my opinion it's the best MMO since 2004, and I've tried them all! For me, the issue when I play is that I constantly ask myself "Why not just play WoW?". WoW has way more players meaning I can talk to more people about it, it has better support, better animations, etc. That's my reasoning. I'm not calling out negative attention to RIFT, I'm just really upset that Trion didn't try harder to make the combat more fluid. I'd way rather be playing a different game than WoW...
Agreed. I have a Necromancer/Warlock and the animations are pretty darn good actually. However, melee, reactive movements, and several of the mounts just look awkward!
I've made several posts regarding RIFT's combat animations, and have even put up youtube vids comparing it to others. Combat animations are the weakpoint with RIFT. It initially turned me off and stated publically that I would not be playing RIFT. Ironically I play RIFT now and have been able to get past this flaw.
I actually think the running and jumping animations are very good
Especially when one runs and jumps from a small height. It is very fluid.
Two handed melee isn't so decent though. Mounts are pretty good.
casting seems decent.

Thank you.
The animation I cannot stand out of all of them (their are some that are decent, but none that are particularly amazing) is the elf death animation. My soul dies alittle bit every time.
That being said, I can be a bit nitpicky with art and animation, seeing as that's what I got my degree in, so take my two cents with a grain of salt lmao. I don't think teh general public scrutinizes these things as much as I do haha.
agreed, the pets charge is what cracks me up, no movement in their bodies its just a floating corpse that slams into you.
Still the animation is so much better than in SWTOR. Lol the gameplay videos make me laugh
Yeah animations aren't the best when compared to WoW (but still better than WAR) which i think benefited greatly from the engine and $$ blizz spent on warcraft adventures (which they used on WoW). Trion likely didn't have money to work on animations especially for the pets, hopefully with $$ they got trion uses it to improve some animations and hopefully even allow us to train other pets.
You clearly haven't been watching the newest SWTOR videos then. Not to mention you are comparing a released product to some premature youtube videos.
I agree, but I don't think it's to be cheap.
I think it this is one of the reasons why we can have 200 players on screen and yet have a minimal amount of additional lag. I also think this was done on purpose so the game would feel smooth even at 10-12fps. This is what I get and it feels like a game running at 20fps.
But ya, the animations ARE lacking a bit, though it doesn't take away from the game for me.
Casting is probably the best animations out of the bunch in Rift. Mounts are ok but it's all relative (for example, they are better than LotRO but much worse than AoC).
I don't think the animations are a game breaker by any means but improved animations would make the combat more visceral and interesting.
I guess I am the minority - compared to all the other mmo's, except maybe aoc, I think these are the best animations on the mmo market..... oh well, I often stand alone with my opinion.
You can compare the animations to WoW, but if WoW had the speed of combat that Rift does, they would seem clunky as well. Animations have always been the downfall to any fast-paced game. When you're doing 1-4 abilities (including auto-attack) a second, nothing you can do will make the animations work, except slowing the game down...I think people are just nit-picking now. If animations are really THAT high on the list of "must-haves" in a game, then you should not play MMOs.
Make a list of the top 5 things you must have in order to play a game, animations isn't in it...
