An interesting info bit from the PAX presentation panel, namely about the onleiners that you see the avatars say in a number of the earlier skills videos when they finish an opponent. (like 'and stay down' etc)
Look at the video here, and skip to 5m15s, there it starts.
Apparently it won't be possible that you can turn it off, but there will be a slider (yay) with which you can determine how often those oneliners are being used.
Also, did anyone notice the audible panting of the human and charr thieves when they were running in the skills videos?
It's a small detail, but to me it made the scene more natural and lively.
Also, it made me aware for the first time that in other MMO's your avatar is completely silent when running.
It's those little things that only when they're added makes you realise in an 'of course' epiphany that they should be present and were missing before.

They really do seem to be spending a lot of attention on background noise and chatter.
It's really just an audio flourish, rather than something absolutely necessary for the game, but I'm going to whip out the dreaded 'i' word and say that it definitely adds immersion to the world.
Things seem more real when there's people talking in the background, and when there's little touches like heavy breathing or different running sounds.
I thought he said you could turn it off ? Have you seen some of the things the new mercenary heroes in GW1 say. Its VERY funny espicaly the insanse one. I'm all for npc's speaking to me instead of reading a wall of text .I also like the little touchs Anet is puting into the world to make it seem more alive. It get so dull when you go into a town and the nps never move, say or DO anything.

Nope, he definitely said that right now you can't turn it off, there's only a slider.
Hopefully the slider ranges from 'almost never' to 'relatively often', not a slider that goes from 'all the time' to '90% of the time'.
If its done well then people shudnt noitce it, i dont think many people had. Not enough mmos seem to do this apart from the occasional grunt/urgh when you cast a spell or attack or get damaged. Looks promising
Ahh ok thanks for the info Yes I hope the slider goes like that too. Bound to get boring after a few years

I hope the slider works, of course there is always the mute button.
Yeah, it certainly adds to the immersion factor when your character talks, shouts or just makes general noises (panting), because it's what we do all the time. Be it gloating, taunting or raging, we do it all and I'm glad my characters will be able to do it to.
As for toning it down... I guessing we'll be able to reduce the remarks to just the occasional status reminder (e.g. low energy).
400 for every class... and thats only at release.. i bet more are added over time... thats a huge quantity and i don't think it will ever get boring as long as you don't overdo it with the slider...
The whole idea of background noises and character sounds during running and other actions could add a lot of flavour and immersion to this game.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
400 for every class.
So 200 per sex...
5 races also.
So 40 for each class race/sex combo. 10 for starting a fight, 10 for big crits, 10 for low on health, and 10 for killing something? Or something along those lines.
nice break down
now it make sense to me
edited: the dev say 400 line for each player in the video...not class so i'm back to mind boggling amaze
Why do you assume each sex will have different comments ? or each race for that matter. I think its safer to assume that each class will have 400 one lines no matter which race or sex are.

I actually had the person who answered this on the panel message me on GW2 Guru (I guess he doesn't have an account here, haha), to correct me. I feel really embarrassed, I misheard him in the video! (I had to listen to it a few times to figure out exactly how I misheard him)
'On MMORPG, in the 400 player VO lines thred, you said that I said you can't turn off the player VO, but I said that you could. Just figured I would clarify. Also in that thread people think 400 lines means per race/sex. In fact those 400ish lines are duped on each race/sex and so it is actually about 400 different things you can say, and a total of about 4000 actual recorded lines of vo. Just thought I would clarify.
Jon'
Well, now we know. That's pretty official and very specific. I'm always shocked how many of the ArenaNet people seem to be sneaking around quietly listening to people on GW2Guru, now I realize they're sneakily listening to us EVERYWHERE. Scary!
Really nice but I missed reading if those VO lines are only audible to the character's client or for everyone around him too? Anyone knowy?

I'm wondering if how you choose your character's story (charm, smarts, dignity, aggressiveness, etc.) if that effects what you say or your voice?
I would think someone who is said to be aggressive will have a more scratchy, deeper voice, than someone who gets around on charm.
Just a thought.

Hopefully you can't hear everybody around you. Imagine how messy that would be on a 300v300v300 fight. No matter HOW low you throttled it down, it would be 900x more than you usually hear it by yourself.
Yeah but not if only the characters that get the killing blows have the option to speak up. It would be cool to occasionaly hear your friends say VO lines imo.

Thanks, that's nice to hear.
Also, yeah.. apparently Regina wasn't kidding when she said, they got eyes everywhere lol.
Eat me!
Lol, Big Brother is watching you!
Anyway, nice of him to fill in the details, I was under the impression that the voiced oneliners were determined by class, but it appears to be by race and gender.

Well, if you listen to the oneliners that have been used, it makes sense. They say things like 'How stunning of me', and that could work for any class... just whenever they use an attack that does stunning.
They seem to be conditional upon various effects and results, rather than upon specific moves.
Of course, that would mean they have lines for 400 different things that can happen to each person. That's pretty nice! I mean, past the conditions, I'm not even sure what all they would have to say.
Wouldn't it be immersion breaking if your male character have a woman voice? I would
But race shouldn't matter, or class, maybe some VO will be class specific, but I don't think all of them are mutally exclusive to only each class with no crossover.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Obviously the voice will be different between male and female, and between the races. I was saying why would the comment be different.

Could go either way really. They could use gender specific comments or general comments.
Either is a valid theory until we hear one way or another. Many games use gender specific comments, some are more comical in nature and some try and take a more serious approach. Many games use generic comments and again range from comical to serious.
I could see GW2 going either way at the moment.
i played daoc where there was background(chatter nonsense) noise. this sounds really cool.

I'd assume there's a lot of noise in huge battles, from equipment and also from people especially in a VO heavy game. But yeah, hopefully not from every small scratch.
Anyway, heavy panting + charr = Awful smell? I can see people diving in nearby ponds and waterfalls every now and then just to shake off that unseen debuff "sweaty feeling" when entering camps etc :P
If they're panting heavily, and covered in fur, they're probably not sweating, they're cooling through their tongue. (... and possibly cooling from their horns, since they don't seem to have any other purpose other than heat sinks. Not like you gore people) So no sweaty smell. In fact, diving into a pool might make you smell worse! Get that wet fur smell.
