Hail fellow mmorpger's... i'm looking for a little insight on this game from other player's points of view. I've attended all the beta events so I have an understanding of the game and it's mechanics. I recently saw Rift on Amazon for $40 and thought this might be a good idea. Can some of you gentlemen/ladies give me your perspective on the game thus far?
Comments
For me, I had pre-ordered and cancelled my pre-order after playing it throughout beta. The reason being is that the class system was pretty novel and cool, but then they gutted it the last 3 patches before launch and it ruined an otherwise fairly open system by adding in massive perks for playing a pure class instead of being a hybrid. Destroying the very thing that set them apart.
I thought the combat was slow and akward akin to Warhammer Online.
The only redeeming quality of the game for me was the Rift system which was at least partially new but more of a Warhammer public quest thing.
In the end it seemed like as the patches roll out they were totally destroying some classes into literally unplayability and buffing others to the extreme despite beta feedback. Removing thing like attack power effects your white swings. The PvP, I thought was badly done.
In summation it's like a prettier Warhammer Online with better dungeons and for some that was enough but not for me.
Well at least you're honest. It feel's very familiar to other mmo's i've played but for some reason it maybe fun. Tough decision I suppose. I saw the trees and alot of the powerful abilities are at the top but that sort of make sense.
Graphics are solid
Non bads who know how to play their class are not qq'n. Game was originally built around pve, so excuse Trion if they do not have pefect balance in less then two weeks.
Exploration is encouraged
Reviews are everywhere
People see the game as a threat(yes you do haters) and see it as a step backwards in the genre, so you get a ton of hatred from SWToR and GW2 fans
End game is solid and is buffed up and not down based off recommendations from high end guilds who are pretty good at catching bugs
Ok all i'm hearing here are the positives from someone named "RiftFan." Sorry bro but all games regardless of how polished or amazing they are have some shittiness to them. The graphics aren't bad but aren't that great either. The pve is pretty solid but nothing new. Exploration is encouraged i'll agree to. I don't think you get any hate from either SWToR or GW2 fans.
I think the "hate" is generated by those who might consider it a wow clone such as those who play wow. I can't argue if end game is good or not since I haven't seen anyone post about it. Also I can understand the game based primarily around pve and I wasn't complaining about pvp at all. (BTW my comma key for some reason isn't working. Excuse my bad grammar)
Ask any of these guys what game they do like and I'll put 5$ they say SWToR or GW2. The game has it flaws and the most simple one is it plays like WoW.
If you hate WoW or EQ, then you will not like Rift. Achievements....instanced content...rep build...battlegrounds...professions. The game is solid and will not fail in a month and people are pretty angry.
It does have it's issues with balance because the game is not based around 1v1, so people used to Blizzard nerfs are simply not going to see them. It is based around team play.
Like I said go read any review on the internet and most of them are at 70-80/100 range for a reason. Go watch any of the hundreds(by now) of youtube videos.
This forum is under increased moderation for a reason because people would love to see this game fail.
Now that's more of a subjective argument 8). I do like all of what you mentioned just it all depends on how the devs deal with it. I couldn't stand the week long lockout timers wow had with some of their dungeons. I love pve especially when I see tons of people around me playing. A barren wasteland of an mmo doesn't appeal to me.
They put the raids up to 7 days. Instanced raid are only 20 man..some people hate this, but it means they are not forced to balance around 10 man and make 10 man gear.
The 10 man content is essentially open world and you can be wiped on a pvp server. You walk under a "raid rift located in the 50 zone" you open it and it spawns bosses that are raid difficulty. This is a new concept they are letting us test in live and debug.
Raid gear is raid gear. You get it from raids and not a vendor. Heroics offer token that allow you to get pre-raid gear. Tier 1 heroics are just repeats of the original dungeon. Tier 2 is all new section of the dungeon.
Questing is a negative. It the old formula gather x get y. It does fit more with the storyline, but same old formula.
Ah. So they still followed the same forumla as most games. It's not terribly bad seeing as if you don't have a lockout than people can just keep raiding over and over until everyone's geared. Just it's a pain when you reach endgame and all there's really left to do are those 7 day dungeons. I hit that point in wow and it sort of feels like this maybe the same.
There is stuff to do. The raid content is nowhere near casual friendly and that is a whole another set of qq come in a month when all the casuals start going in there.
The hard core guilds(only one right now out of quite A lot) blasted through all the content and each step of the way Trion was buffing the difficulty and tuning off of their feedback.
Huh?
Forum moderation has nothing to do with people wanting a game to succeed or fail. It may have something to do with frequent trolling, however. Trolling does not affect a game's success or failure. It's just generally done by negative people that have no control over anything at all.
Anyway....when a game succeeds we ALL succeed as gamers. It brings more options to the market. Regardless of whether you PERSONALLY like a game....it's success will bring more options. Now you may not choose to play it.....but the option still exists. You then continue to vote with your money. I can't see ANY motivation for someone WANTING a game to fail, so your comment really made no sense to me. What would you GAIN from a game failing?
To the OP:
There are reviews ALL over the web for this game ranking it anywhere from as low as 70 to as high as 90/100. I would say that sounds pretty solid. Read around and make an informed decision.

Ok so the endgame content is really hard so this eliminates a strong possbility of the majority qqing and having their way? That sounds pretty good don't get me wrong. I'm still on the fence about the game so if there's anymore input you could give it would be greatly appreciated. Maybe some specifics of what you like/dislike?
There are loads of other threads about this. Cruise the RIFT boards on this site. People have gone into a lot of specific detail in many threads.

Sounds pretty solid. Thank you for your help.
That is the best advice right there. There are some issues that blown out of proportion because hey if it applies to me it must apply to the other 500-700k people playing the game.
Mages do have weaknesses in pvp, but that has specifically been addressed and they have said they are buffing their survivability against warriors/rogues.
They got youtube vids on pretty much any class or anything you could be wondering about.
