Good information but I think the reviewer clearly had never played WAR. A lot of the things that excites him and he seems blown away by come directly from WAR.
Excellent review! Most likety the most thorough review I have read about Rift. It is very specific and very truthful. I like how they were stating goods and bads about a lot of information. I hope people will read this non bias review and understand that the game really is a gem in the MMO industry. If people don't like the game I hope they can see the potential of the game. I also hope that other developers can see what a game shouild be like on release. I think Rift is goign to be used as an example, almost a template, how MMO's can still be successful in the World of WoW. It is possible to make a game that people will enjoy, in large numbers, without turning back to WoW. I feel Rift is going to be used as an example as to how games should be released ,and what the general public is looking for in a gaming expereince. I'm not talking about style, content, or type of game, but rather how well it is played. I like TRion's honesty, and simplicity at the same time. They havne't given false hope to anything. They havne't promised things that hanvet happened. They kept it simple and release a well done game for people to enjoy. Rift should be used as a template, example, for future developers to keep in mind. If they do so I believe other developers can hope for success in their games. The MMO genre is not dead.
Rift has been good, its not really a bad game. And obviously its now a wow competitor. I have been playing a level 65 healing cleric and so far so good. I like the game play, graphics and all. Probably those who haven't touched wow, they would like Rift. More over, I like it enough that I'm following awesome Rift guides at http://www.riftreview.net . But yeah, must say, its not a wow killer, thats all >.<
As a somewhat neutral party, and having been a player of WoW, WAR and LoTRO, I can say that RIFT does in fact take all the good bits from those games. It also removes some of the bad things too, but I can't help but feel like all the fluff and shininess in the game is all that you can really expect. No real depth. No real purpose to continue logging in after hitting cap.
Sure, rifts are quite interesting and invasions coupled with them make the often shallow quests a bit more fun to do, but at the end of the day I'd like to know that what I have accomplished truly made some sort of difference in the world. For me, that is the greatest thing that I personally can take from an MMO (something I haven't really felt except for in the bane of my own existence, WoW)...
I'm also a hardcore RPer and enjoy immersing myself in my character and the world he lives in. I can't say it'd be hard to do that in Rift, but there's only so much my character can talk about or do. I can sit in a tavern (only seen one in Meridian) and talk about my latest exploits-taking down a death rift all by myself. I can make up actions like assassinating some Guardian prick who spit on my odd-looking mount, or how I think that same mount is mentally deficient because he runs in perpetual slow-motion...
To put it bluntly, Rift is a more serious, more mature and polished version of WoW (around WotLK, before Cata), with elements of WAR, and a hint of the Rings.
What really disappoints me is the clever, yet unappealing, masking of a somewhat simple and outdated character creation system. I can change my character's overall face shape and the texture, but I can't go in-depth and really tweak his looks. For all intents and purposes he looks like the next Eth who happens to set his skin color to the palest one. I actually tested it. I found my evil twin! Oh, but he was a bit shorter than my character so I guess that doesn't count, does it? Perhaps when they cloned him from me, they borked the bone-restructuring sequence which made him pop out without calves...
I want to see if Trion can pump more flare into Rift. I want to see if they'll make the character creator more advanced, maybe like Aion or Age of Conan. Maybe they'll add some sandbox elements in. They'd surely kill WoW (it's main competition) if they did that. Maybe player-housing as well...
Ah one can hope.
Just for shit's and giggles (and to extend this wall of text even further) here's my ratings:
I'm sorry that the game did not satisfy your roleplaying needs.
Did you know that the game has a dual dye system?
I would also like to see custom tabs at some point, but I'm not heavy into roleplaying (although I prefer immersive world in my rpgs) so it's not a problem so far.

That's just it. I haven't tried to roleplay yet but I can already see what it will be like. Either discussing rifts, various assassinations or my travels. Sure, I could try to find some companions to do this with, but even then with games that follow the themepark method it's hard to find another roleplayer who isn't claiming to be the "big bad hero of the whole world and then some"...
Thanks for sharing that review. Anywayz, no mather what others say, if you're looking for something to play and haven't tested RIFT yet, do it. It's your choice if you continue playing or not. If you do some research you can buy digital versions with decent discounts.

Very comprehensive and answers the question if it's worth it for me. I'll be picking this up Friday most likely!

Good information but I think the reviewer clearly had never played WAR. A lot of the things that excites him and he seems blown away by come directly from WAR.
And then this one was also completely laughable. The combat is clunkier than most MMOs and certainly nothing compared to a single player game.
Most of the rest of the review was pretty fair though.

That was damned informative. He was quite taken by the game and that showed yet at the same time the whole review has a fair and factual feel to it.
Good example of what a review of an MMO can be.

A level 65 cleric? How did you accomplish that feat when the cap is 50?
lvl hacks! lool

One nice touch when you're zoning somewhere, the zone message is directly related to how deep into the zone story you've progressed.
