I believe that EQ2 is the best MMO out there right now. How does Rift compare? It sounds fun and Rifts seem exciting, but I'm afraid I will get sick of rifts after a very short while (since I have read they happen far too often for most people).
Rift. If for no other reason than being able to use your abilities in any order you please, without being penalized for it (EQ2's combo system). Then there is the constant zoning in EQ2 as well as a graphics engine that produces plastic manakin like avatars. Then there's the EQ2 ability upgrade system that means your powers pretty much suck unless you get them upgraded to master level, so gaining new powers isn't necessarily fun unless you can afford to buy or have wasted godawful hours making ability upgrades by the time you get those new abilities. In and of itself, EQ is an okay game, but Rift is a lot more fun and frankly, much more attractive visually.
It's not the rifts themselves that exasperate some people, such as myself, but rather the invasion events that pretty much shut down quest hubs, healers, respawn points and so forth. Not that they can't be fun to do, but for some of us, they happen a bit too often when we just want to do other things instead.
if you really enjoy your current MMO (eq2 im assuming) I suggest not playing Rift, especially if you cant convince your friends who might be playing the game to come join you.
The dynamic events in the game plus the ability to swap into complete opposite roles on the fly will make going back to the game you love very hard. They dont seem like much, but they add an entirely new dimension to you game that other MMO's lack.
Its definitely not without its down sides, such as repetitive armor appearances, guild banks etc. but when your in the game and realize that it just came out weeks ago you start to realize that even the best games were at this stage at some point and most of them were much worse off then where rift is right now.
so, no..rift doesnt compare to EQ2.. not at all really. but its fun as hell.
Have a year script for EQ2, all i do is login and research the next spell. i dont play anymore, rift is much much better. well that is unless you love running all over the map to talk to someone then run all over again to turn in the quest.
