I'm in a pickle and I can't figure my way out of it.
I currently play FFXI and I run a new linkshell thats gotten alot of praise and support from the members here. I love the game, and I am having a blast with them. However, the servers are down right now due to the stuff happening over in Japan. Its supposed to be for a week, maybe longer. I love the game, and the people I am playing with and won't be quitting that anytime soon, but I have a soft spot in me for PVP something FFXI doesn't do very well, and I'm looking for something to fill that void. I enjoy mostly world PVP, but I can do the occassional instanced PVP. I did try the beta, and it did remind me alot of WoW, but in a way I was telling myself not to like it. I have friends pressuring me to play, and I'm just at a loss for what to do. I played wow for almost years and quit at Cataclysm. Was always more of a PVPer than a raider, but I didn't do the competitive PVP but more the world spontaneous variety.
Should I click buy, or is this not the right game?

It all comes down on how much you value your (real) life I guess. But do think about those you will leave behind.
My brand new bloggity blog.
I'll just say that PvP and more importantly World PvP are not on the strong side of this game. Is there ganking to be had? Absolutely, but it's all meaningless and inconsequential.
Just know what you're getting into and you should be fine. It's very similar to WoW and other themeparks. I would actually say it's closer to WAR than WoW tbh, but that's just me.
I hated the game in beta but I'm now actually having a decent amount of fun now.
There are two factors I think have swayed my opinion -
1) It's not beta anymore. I think playing anything beta, knowing there's a shorter cap and that my character will be wiped makes me feel less attached to my character and I end up not liking the game regardless of how good it is.
2) Playing with my gf - Playing any game with others always cranks it up a notch.
Having said that, I'm enjoying the game after hating it in Beta.
I will make it easier and less bias from someone who neither plays the game, but also could care less if you buy it or not. Grab a coin, preferably a penny since it's cheaper, and then flip it in the air. If it lands on heads, buy it.

Honoestly I would say no if you are looking for PvP. Rift does a lot of things pretty well from a PvE perspective, but the PvP in this game is severely lacking IMO.

Are you level 50 to say pvp is extremely lacking? You're just talking about war fronts or you have actually done mass scale pvp and taken towns? Pvp is not lacking in this game at all other than the fact that warfronts are a little bland.
Personally I would say donate the money to the Red Cross to help the people suffering in Japan and find a F2P or Beta to try out instead. Otherwise Rift has alot of people that are enjoying the game, PvP may not be it's shining point though.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

It's a great game, and definitely one of the, if not THE best game i've played in a long time. I've tried most games, but none of them got me hooked like i once was in UO/AO/DAoC.. except this one So yea, imo, i'd say give it a try.
EDIT: Oh and hi! It's Draco from your LS.
pvp in Rift is a joke...if its pvp you want then dont buy Rift

Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.
Buy it, pvp is not lacking in this game. I play games almost exclusively for pvp. Its turned out to be the best game I have tried so far. Time will tell if it gets old but the more I learn the more I like.
any other PVPers want to give their take on rifts PVP

I have really been enjoying Rift so far, but the PvP is extremely lackluster! There isn't much too it. Level 50 Warfronts are quite boring and that's about the extent of your PvP ventures!
I've loved it so far on the PVE end of the game, but as above the PVP is well...crap, really didn't do anything for me at all. World PVP can be great fun but warfronts not so much, after about 4 warfronts I was bored of them as there just wasn't anything fun about them..simple capture and defend objectives. Others may find it fun and are perfectly entitled to do so, but I didn't
Hey hey! I'm a ranger too... and I picked not because of the pets, but because I like beying an expert with bows and ranged physical damage... together with Sabotage (insane damage for now at least) and bard (a few buffs are nice). And rangers aren't the only ones with pets... warrior cat wins in terms of cuteness... or if you consider druid's pets (they aren't really pets like animals, but okay), they have a fairy... A FAIRY! Nuff said.

Asking us if you should buy or not it is not up to us...
Watch the reviews and then think about it... the PROFESSIONAL reviews (and even some of them are dangerous). Find points in common between them, think about what the game offers and then think what it lacks for your taste. Problem solved.
But if you want to be my "bwest fuwend in the wule wurld", you will buy the game... just kidding, do what you think it is right... but if your still enjoying your current game... why don't you continue to play it until you get tired and THEN you decide to buy this or not?

RIFT is geard towards casual gamers which is the vast majority of the gaming market. So if you like to be lazy and take your time enjoying a game. RIFT works.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
1st off - ITT: Paragus QFT
2ndly: I played Rift through CB into Headstart and if the PVP is anything like it was in beta, I would say no.
Why?: They still don't have the balance right in the classes and the queu system for battlegrounds/warfronts w/e you want to call it. Most ppl do it for daily quest and then get out. You will come up against the same premade again and again. That is just roflstompage as the pugs don't have an effective way to communicate and we all know how important communication is in PVP.
If you decide to pull the trigger anyway: I have friends @ Seastone (PvP server) that will take you in Guardian side in a heartbeat. They have vent and all that. Let me know, since we are in the same FFXI LS. I spoke with them, they are ready for a new member.
Me...I am just going to catch up on some schoolwork and RL social activities until Titan comes back online. When that will be, I don't know.
Wow pvp used to be southshore fighting and town raids, then it moved into the battlegrounds, and from there it moved into the arena, and from there I stopped playing because I couldn't stand it any more.
rift pvp is like what I wish wow had done a long time ago. the battlegrounds exist, sure, but the emphasis is on actually being outside in the game world instead of closed in a small box with a theme like capture the flag. Every town or camp in every zone can be taken over and destroyed by enemy factions, or even by npc factions. there are dynamic events and raid-like content which spawns everywhere that give people reason to actually be out in the game world instead of in the main city waiting for an instance queue.
in a typical wow server you have a huuuuge empty map while 2000 people sit in a capital city waiting for a pvp queue
in rift you have the entire population of the server running around in the game world fighting eachother, fighting dynamic content, taking over eachother's camps etc, and for those who can't find the action, the queue times are still faster then wow.
I am a pvper, and I have my new favorite mmo in rift.
one thing I would like to point out: the skill system in rift is much more complicated then your average mmo, and by this i mean you have much more choice in customizing your character. I think that there are a lot of people who get frustrated with the difficulty of building a decent spec and instead declare pvp to be "a joke" for these people i am sorry that there is no cookie cutter specs available yet, but not too sorry.
pretty much this^^
half the fun in this game is finding a spec that works for you and not going oh lets go to wowhead and see what the FotM is atm.
open world events on a PVP server in this game lets you have several options, imagine seeing the oposite faction trying to close a rift and you call your guildies/ friends and charge in and help them close it then turn on them at the last moment and decimate them leaving their corpses strewn amongst those of the rift mobs.
I see people cryassing about it isnt balanced! Well it isnt suposed to be, this isnt a 1v1 kinda deal, learn to work as a team and do your part and you will do fine . heck I play a Lock /Chloro/ Necro ( I never was fond of caster classes until now) and I can fear a warrior and burn him down as well as keep myself and others healed while I kill him.
people rely too much on "balance" instead of teamwork and learning the classes/roles anymore ,,, There will always be someone better or more powerful than you, but if you work together as a team you are legion .....
The only problem I have had is the multi-class system. It doesn't make sense for a Reaver and a Paladin to be combined! They have completely different natures. I know you don't have to but they suggest that pairing!!
Ink, are you playing RIFT?

No Ray. I'm going to wait it out, lurk some forums and nail down midterms. I have spring break coming soon and hopefully the servers will be back up. If not I was considering a little EVE instead, get my sci-fi groove on. But I can get you into a good pvp guild right away in Rift. I think some of the guys are playing Rift now, not sure what servers.
I agree with some of the other posters, pvp is very bad. It does pve really good for this type of mmo, which i enjoy. But ya, pvp is just bad imo. I'll probably sub for a month or so, but the lacking pvp is the games biggest weakness, and without it i find mmos often grow stale quick, but this is not a pvp mmo.
Warfronts are okay though the only one that is really fun (IMO) is Black Garden. Quick in and quick out. The rest I go to for quests or if the queues aren't popping for BG. As far as the rest of the game goes, it's fun and stable but I would summarize it as such: I played Beta up to level 20 so I wouldn't spoil the 'newness'. Now in my 40s on 2 characters, I log in, try to get through a few quests, then stop to eat, clean up after winter etc. I am sorry to say it but for a good game the quest chains (after doing a few in any given new area) are boring.
So to the OP, PvP isn't great though there are fun moments. PvE is fun at first then dull, at least for me. I think it's a good game and certainly a well cared for game but not a sustainable game (again not for me). I hope Rift does well and the players who do like it, continue to support it over time.
I'm not so much into battleground type PVP as I am world pvp. Is rift still "bad' in that regard?

A little unbalanced (1v1 particularly), but the world PVP shines during the PVPvPVE moments when you're having to face both an incoming rift invasion and the opposing faction.
