WoW Vs. EQ2

Ok, Me and my friend are going to play the same game... we've looked up stuff on wow and eq2 although i can't find much on it.

Obviously from the topic you know what i'm about to ask,
Should we get EQ2 or WoW

I know WoW Is kind of PvP based once you reach lvl 60

And EQ2 Doesn't even have PvP *Yet*

But Eq2 has amazing graphics.
And WoW... Doesn't.

*sigh* I dont know, its a tough decision because no matter which one we get we'll have fun for a while.

WoW has very impressive graphics, they are highly detailed and the colors are beautiful.
    But aside from graphics...
I played both and found WoW superior in PVE and PVP combat. EQ2 had better customization, but it was less noticeable than in WoW (hard to explain...)
EQ2 has a free trial called Trial of the Isle. I would suggest that. As for WoW, find someone with a key.
Good luck with your decision ::::28::
PS: If you pick WoW, play horde on Bleeding Hollow. My name is Niku ::::02::

i play on australian servers because racism is acceptable there
  • vintageonevintageone Member Posts: 60

I've played Both the games... that's why it's so hard to choose.

I've played the trail of the isle and i liked it so far but i wanted to see more.

with wow i have a friend who has it and is letting me play it over at his house until i decide.
    Thats also fun... *Sigh* Hmmm....
I like the smite and lightning spells you start out with in Eq2 they look amazing.

i hear that wow has bad lag does eq2??

WoW has year 2000 grpahics not 2005 graphics. they are outdated and have a very low poly count. i found that some combat in wow was fun but hte distance htings for rangd wepaons was gay and not roleplay like because there are no limits in distance in real roleplay. EQ2 has great long immersive quests wow didnt. wows quests were way to ismple and you got like 5 levels form some walk 2 inch quest.

    image

  • vintageonevintageone Member Posts: 60

Ok mabey not 5 lvls in one quest but after like 5 quests i grew 2 levels.

image Ahrrg i hate having to choose between a game...

Eq2 i know is immersive i played the TotI and That was a huge world and that's just newbie island i want to see more though.
Wow since i've been playing i got to lvl 16 tauren warrior on stormrage *On friends thing*

And it's been fun but it's kind of boring... No one will ever help me... everyones rotten to me. And they're all lvl 60 and defending the crossroads or what not. Same thing went for eq2 but that was because everyone was so excited they didn't want to quest at the time but i did quest with people to kill that orc that was awesome. i take it that was an instace... cool i don't care much for instances. i hear too that at lvl 60 it gets boring... just a bunch of pvp defending the land... oh boy... what fun... i like how eq2 Keeps Adding quests. I haven't seen any kind of quest updating or anything just this battlegrounds thing.. oh boy more pvp... heh hmm... i dunno...

Ive played both games and found WOW to be more fun. I found it easy to get into and even if you have very little time to play you can allways get something done. As far as graphics go, I didnt think they were that good before I played either. Once I started I liked them a whole lot better than EQ2.

Not sure what to tell you though, read both sites and see what aspects you like best. But Ill tell you one thing---there is a reason so many people are playing WOW.

  • JenuvielJenuviel Member Posts: 960

With regard to lag in WoW, that's only true if you play on one of the extremely high-population servers during peak hours. I'm on 100 Mbps cable and I'll get a ping of around 200 during peak hours, but it's really not even noticeable. Really, I wouldn't let lag factor into your decision at all. Choose the game engine you prefer. Lag will come and go in every MMO (EQ2 included), so make your choice based on features.

I think the biggest thing WoW has going for it is the ability to solo for most of the game. Granted, that might not be much of a draw for you, but it's nice not having to stand around looking for a pickup group when your friends aren't around. The endgame, of course, is pretty similar for both games; it's all about raiding. The one difference there, as you mentioned, is that WoW also has a pvp option. That's only a draw if you enjoy pvp, however, and not everyone does.

I tend to be a solo-pve player, so the choice was a no-brainer for me. If you prefer grouping, however, EQ2 might be the way to go. Both games have high production value and competent staff, so it really just comes down to style. WoW suits me for the time being, but your mileage may vary, as the saying goes. (And for the record, I really like the WoW graphics. =)

    I agree it's a tough decision.

WOW's graphics are pretty good. They look alot better in actual gameplay than they do in screenshots because you can see the effect more easily. EQ2's graphics are simply amazing but you need a pretty stout system to get the most out of them.

Graphics are less important than gameplay though. Characters are more customizable in EQ2 but it takes much longer to become powerfull. There are also alot more character classes in EQ2. WOW's characters are more straight forward from a gameplay standpoint. Combat is pretty similar in both. EQ2 has tons of quests and they are adding more stuff all the time.

Lets get to brass tacks: If you want a game you can play for a long time with tons of options and quests, fantastic graphics and a pretty mature community (most of the time) then play EQ2. If you want a game thats easy to get into and have fun right away, has fun crafting that you can do while you are leveling, and pvp (albeit somewhat flawed) then choose WOW.

Since there are 2 of you, your safest bet will be WOW as it is more accessable to more people than EQ2. I personaly had a blast with both of them.

  • vintageonevintageone Member Posts: 60

Yeah actually the graphics are fine... good in fact.
Actually i'm also looking at some game called Dark and light. but proabblay not.

I like being able to solo but i also like a challenge... thats something ppl said eq2 had was challenge... some people say the quests are a sinch in wow so far they are... all i have to do is kill 4 creature.. i heard that once yer 60 it's impossible to do quests without a group.
    I dunno...

People say eq2 is a challenge.
People say wow is not a challange. *Some say it is*
Wow is fun, but it seems to be a tad bit on the boring side... because i keep thinking about lvl 40-60 while im lvl 16 and the quests take me on the same ride... but i'm still enjoining what i'm playing.
Everquest 2 was fun also. The quests seemed cool, i liked how they *Said* the quests and how they got to be a pain when the tough ones came around like killing the last orc and the pirate ghost... That started to feel like Forced-Grouping like in FFXI but no... i heard a lot of ppl saying its not forced grouping...

Hmm i wish i could play both but i lack time and money.

Oh one more thing that's making me really get scared about EQ2 ,

    EQ1 HAD 10000000 Expansion packs....
Is EQ2 Going to do that too... If so i'm out .. and going to w0w...

Both WoW and EQ2 are a great game, worth the price and with regular major updates. The only problem inside of it is the server performance of the game..But for me, I prefer the graphics & sounds of WoW than EQ2..lolimage

Both Eq2 and WoW fall flat.  Out of the two, EQ2 is a little bit better but that is not saying muchl.

Cant really comment on EQ2 as I havent tried It yet but I may soon.  Still trying to decide between that or GW.

I did notice something really odd about WoW though. Maybe its just me or maybe its the fact I was a mage but the mobs/quests seemed to get much easier as the game progressed.  I remember being lvl 10-15 and having to run for my life if more then one mob came after me.  When I was in my 50s I'd go after 3 and easily kill them with solo attacks, and god knows how many I could take with a potion and a mana ruby using aoe spells.  It was also just weird that the fireball-fireball-frostnova-fireball-fireblast strat at lvl 15 simply becomes a fireball-fireball, and if i need to throw in a fireblast once I hit 60 and my criticals can 2 hit any non elite mob in the game.

I almost doubt WoW will have a long enough lifespan to survive an expansion. Most, if not all players that started this game at launch have 1 or more chars at level 60 already, and I know a lot of people are getting bored ::::21:: If it wasn't for the fact that I have absolutely nothing else to do, I'd have deleted after a month.

As far as WoW graphics go, they're pretty if you squint.. lots of color... but open your eyes and you can see that the models are pretty awful. In close combat (especially in parties), seeing what you're fighting is as good as impossible.

I don't really know EQ2 (I like what I hear so far), but the original's expansion hysteria is enough to put me off for now.

Well I can say I was in kind of the same dilemma. I do like to hop into a game have fun for half and hour and get back to do something else. I guess everyone does like their game to allow them to do something else beside their virtual existence ;)

But I do also like immersive crafting and detailed character development.

In the end you need to choose which is more important to you. EQ will eat up a lot of time if you want it to be fun. The quests can be very time consuming, the loading times and travel will also take more time than in WoW. The options you have in customizing your character both visually and skillwise are much deeper than in WoW.
But for it to be fun you WILL have to dedicate more time to the game than you would need in WoW.

The graphics are really a matter of taste. WoW's pro is that it is fluent and smooth while EQ2 does lag and stutter (fps lag not network lag) like a rusty engine unless you have a 3.4 GHz 64 bit CPU and a 500$ graphics card. I do like the details in EQ2 gfx, the fine textures and the little things like smoke, water ripples, cloth simulation but if you look at the whole image I must say that EQ2 looks rather poor and artificial. WoW's graphics designers I simply better and did a great job in creating a visually believable world. It just fits and looks fitting and not simply made up from parts. On the other hand of course WoW uses an extremely simplified visual style which many like and many don't, so it is a matter of taste.

If you have much time, like details and most of all like to quest and interact with friendly people who have a love for Roleplaying, then EQ2 is your thing.

If you want an easy to get in but still vivid MMORPG where you mainly want to solo with less weight on grouping and roleplaying then WoW is better. Especially if you plan on playing rather casually than every day.

  • Takata5Takata5 Member Posts: 336

I currently play both games as well but its still too early for me to decide weather I like EQ2 better than WoW. I'm find I'm taking a bit longer to level than most other players in WoW. My toon is only lvl 21.

I do like WoW graphics better than EQ2. They are brigther and more colourful. I don't know why everyone says they're so cartoonish. Also being a former EQ1 player I'll probably like EQ2 better, but thats just because its more suited to my taste. If your a casual gamer then WoW should be the game for you and your friend. There are tons of quests you can do and since you'll be with your friend you shouldn't have any problems doing them no matter what your class is. My toon in EQ2 is lvl 10 and has both soloed and found groups.  I think you'll have some quests that are easy, and some that are hard to do by yourself. I personally perfer to group when I play MMO's.

As for lag issues, I don't get much of any in either games but I guess thats because of mostly the system that I run on.  I run a AMD64 Athlon 3000, ASUS 128mb video card and 1 gig of ram. I can run around zones that have 100 people in it with no lag issues at all:) And the video card doesn't have to cost $500. Shop around and look for the best deals. But do make sure its at least 128mb.

WoW is also geared more toward pvp. So you might want to look into that if your into pvp. But EQ2 is comming with thier own pvp in the next expansion. So best course of action would be to play both games if you can afford to. Then decide on which one you like better.

Another good point about EQ2 is the mentoring system.  Since the OP is playing with a friend, if one of you out-levels the other, the higher level player can "mentor" the lower level player thereby effectively becoming the same level as the lowby.  For example, if you are level 30 and your friend  is level 20, you can mentor him/her and become level 20 also.

As far as soloing is concerned, EQ2 was transformed into a very solo friendly game.  You can easily solo all the way up to the level cap of 50.

SOE doesnt take the EQ franchise seriously, its just a way to milk the MMO playerbase :P. WoW doesnt have much of an end game and the content patches are coming in slowly(3 month wait for one of them), plus WoW doesnt have much of a diversity of things to do(no real social game, everythings combat and end game is mostly group combat). I dont think either games have the lasting power. I played World of Warcraft for 6 months, got to the point where I would rather sit and do nothing than log in.

In the first few weeks after its release, EQ2 was chumbate, and someone would have to be dense to pick it over WoW.  However, I've been hearing about how much better EQ2 has become lately and it's starting to peak my interest again, so I may give it another go.  Yes, I know this goes against what I said about never touching it again after SOE tried to take advantage of WoW's constant server problems, but I don't like to remain so narrow.  If anything I'm curious to see just how good the improvements to EQ2 really are.

PS: Can someone tell me if the Froglok race is available to play yet?  Last I checked, which was a while ago, they were yet to be unlocked.

  • Takata5Takata5 Member Posts: 336
Yes the froglok race is available to play, but you have to do a quest to unlock them.  I haven't done the quest cause I don't want to touch those ugly froggies, :p

I would rate WoW's graphics much higher than EQ's.  Graphics are mroe than polygon count.  WoW's artwork and attention to details makes thier graphics imho much more immersive and superior to EQ2's.  EQ2's art work is low quality and the game looks dull and lacks atmosphere.  The difference in quality is quite noticeable when switching games.

EQ2's graphical limitations are inidicative of its biggest failing.  It lacks a atmosphere and character.  It is dull and the game has no soul.  I think this goes a long way in decribing why EQ lacks that certain "fun factor"  that games like WOW and EQ1 possess.

Well i come from a background in SCIFI so i really really really like EvE online.I never had time to dedicate to a corp like they wanted me to.

So for me i play WoW and love it.To this day i cant beleive it is true.I HATE fantasy games.Particularly EQ and EQ2.But in general most of them.

But there is something about WoW that has me hooked. The ease of play? The easily accomplished and rewarding quests? The PvP?

Its hard to put my finger on it.But its the same obsessive feel i had when i played my 1st mmo.I couldnt wait to get home and log in.The game is fun solo or in groups doesnt matter. Its simplistic wich is cool when you just want to get in a half hour or so.

Your buddy and you will have a blast.Easy leveling and pretty simple gameplay.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

I have played both EQ2 and WoW...  Here are my two cents.   EQ2 is definately better than WoW in many different ways.  EQ2 is more diverse in every aspect.  Personally, I definately disliked WoW, but, that is just my opinion.
  • MegazarMegazar Member Posts: 5

the biggest thing that turned me off about eq2 was the HO's. I didn't like it in ffxi, and I didn't like it in eq2.

  • BlackStriderBlackStrider Member Posts: 11

I own EQ2, and I think it is the better of the two, because the graphics are superior, the gameplay is extremely more flexible and the crafting and questing of EQ2 is generally of a higher quality::::01::

*btw, new to the forum ::::19::*

  • BlackstarBlackstar Member Posts: 50

EQ2 has more detailed graphics but they are still boring unimaginative graphics.  They lack significant variation.  While you can actually see every single armor ring in a chain mail vest, every vest looks the same, with minor color variation.  Every saber looks like every other saber, either with a silver pommel or a gold pommel.  One caster's robe looks like the next.  Everything is highly detailed, but there is little in the way of variation.  WoW just looks more vibrant and alive, especially the Night Elf zones.  There are more starting zones, more towns and villages, etc.  WoW is just magical, EQ2 is not.

Both games are easy to level in, in either game you can get to max by soloing.  EQ2 quests are much more involved, but not as rewarding.  The quests are a bit more challenging in EQ2 and lack the "I am a noob" question marks and exclamation points that you see in WoW.

What EQ2 has that WoW lacks are voice-overs.  They are a mixed bag.  It's fun to hear an npc give a witty response....the first time...but not the second....third...fourth....thousandth.   The voice overs can get annoyingly repetitive, however that is something that can be tweaked and improved.

Finally EQ2 is very linear.  There are only two starting cities and everyone ends up doing the exact same quests by their 25th level.  Everyone of a particular class has the exact same weapons and gear.  Everyone experiences in the exact same dungeons and kill the exact same boss mobs.  Everyone's adventure is pretty much the same.
