Firefall: PAX East Overview

Part Team Fortress 2, part MMO, Firefall is an "odd beast" according to MMORPG.com Lead Writer Bill Murphy. Bill had the chance to check out Firefall during PAX East and talk about the game with Lead Designer Scott Youngblood. See what Bill found out about Firefall in his latest article. Leave us your impressions when you're finished.

As our own Garrett Fuller hopped onto the machine and began to fire his way through one of the ongoing PvP matches that were running at the show, I had a chance to speak to Scott Youngblood about what I was watching. The booth was set up to have multiple 5v5 games running, and Garrett had just hopped in on the Blue Team playing as an Assault character (aptly named AngryPigeon) in one of the game’s many team-based PvP maps. Scott told me that there was definitely plenty of PvE content in the game where you can group up with your Army (guild/clan) mates, do missions, gather loot and resources, and advance your character and gear as well as that of your Army. And then from there you’ll take all that you’ve earned into the PvP areas of the game and put them to use for all to see and (hopefully) fear your Army.

Nice looking forward to this game. I like the co-op idea and the whole e-sports thing I hope they have it done right.

I'm liking the B2P/F2P trend that is starting here.

Certanly looks worth a look, like the art style too, dash of the more fantastic in with say, appleseed era Shirow?

Nice write up and a very cool game concept. Still a bit scared about the f2p factor though. You never really know how much the use of an item shop get stimulated or in what way it gives you advantages untill you've played the game.

(Being able to get everything you need in the game itself is cool, but we don't know how hard that will be yet).

I also played the game during PAX East.

I am NO FPS player by any means, but it was a blast to run around and pot shot at other players.

It felt like a combo of Halo gameplay but no-where near the twitch-level of Unreal Tournament, with a dose of Borderlands tossed in for visuals.

Been following this game for a long time. Can't wait to give it a whirl!

I too like this F2p/B2p trend, even if most of them don't do it right, it gives us a chance to see how the game feels for ourselves instead of depending on friend passes and invites.

However, If this wasn't free I probably wouldn't bother.   I'm never paying a monthly subscription for 'match making' and 'X vs X" arena/battlegrounds again.      My monthly payments are reserved for emerssive largescale open world MMORPGs, not lobby games.  thanks.

This is not a troll, flame, or anything else worth banning me over. It is simply my pure opinion, and I have a right to share it.

The PvE in this game is going to be an open persisten world......from my understanding the only instanced things will be the pvp.  They are trying to avoid what Global Agenda did and just make it an instances grinder.

Go watch the director video on the website, things will be happening to the world even when you are not online.

I attended PAX East and got to try it out at their booth.  It was really fun for the short time that I got to play .  I'm really looking forward to it.

Looks very promising.  I just hope they have a solid method of bringing in enough revenue to support themselves.  F2P means I'll definitely be giving it a shot when it releases, but will open my wallet only if they convince me they've earned my money.  So far, so good though.

As a player of almost all the best free to play mmos i think this game would be the best so far.

Its the kind of game that says play me and and feel pure wickedness,I'd go as far as saying it will blow the new up-coming gears of war 3 game out of the water and i see that as a huge complement since i love GOW.

Hadn't heard of this one but it sounds VERY interesting.

The insanity of this game is incredible.

    i personaly love it.

this game is a mix of. borderlands, TF2 and Global agenda.

the style is alot like borderlands where the action matches that of TF2 and the open world with jetpacks match that quite a bit of global agenda.

players intrested in FPS should devinately keep an eye out for this game.

Home is where the Heart is.

So basically it's another type of Global Agenda?  Makes sense

    Far from it.

I suggest looking into the game further, rather than just judging it based off of a single article.

The match-made content maybe.  As far as competitive shooters go, it's drawing more from Tribes than anything else.  But aside from having these tournaments and team based games, there's a fully persistent online world to play in when you're not PvP-ing.  It's going to be something unique, that's for sure.

Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.

So the only lobby part of the game with be the PvP, the PvE will be an ongoing persistant world?  If this is true I'm in!

  • LotusBunnyLotusBunny Member UncommonPosts: 20

    No.  Not even a little.

Having played it at PAX East, I can tell you it's nothing like that.

CS in a persistant world would be amazing.
