If you have a legit copy of windows you can download microsoft security essentials for free. I hear it's pretty decent, and doesn't hog up resources on your computer.

Avast is the best right now, but it's majorly annoying with pop-up spam. I use Microsoft Security Essentials.

Sadly, MSE is probably the best of the "free, easy to maintain security programs."  Now, I personally don't like it, even though I use it.

If you looking for free you should go with AVG antivirus, even though its free it still takes care of the job, and for firewall go with comodo firewall. imho the best free firewall in town http://www.comodo.com/

Have to agree with above.  Microsoft Security Essentials offers the best free security you can get on a Windows Machine.  Even for pay options it is one of the superior choices.  It essentially offers more protection then ESET NOD32, but comes with a smaller footprint.  NOD32 until MSE offered the smallest footprint and the best protection.

MSE also includes all the basics people should for security.  A typical anti-virus, a Hueristics based scanner, and a firewall.  Main problem is the same as pretty much all Microsoft products.  They have such a large portion of the market share that anyone who attempts to compromise a machine builds work arounds for it.

Microsoft Security Essentials is pretty good so far for me.Been using it for about 8 months now I guess.Doesnt give alot of false positives which is nice

edit* be careful about Kerpersky. Both me and my father had it (I had the name brand Kerpersky,he had Earthlink ISP antivirus which is run by Kapersky ) We both got viruses ,thats why I dont have it anymore even though I just resuscribed for another year at the time.I couldnt trust it anymore.
