There always seems to be a shortage of tanks. Is it because the class is not enjoyable? Or is it because it's often annoying to be the leader of a group (whether officially or unofficially)?
Me, I have always preferred to play a healer or mage-type class. I have, however, tanked in WoW during TBC and I enjoyed the mechanics of druid tanking at that time.
So I am curious. Which tank classes are your favorite (from any MMO) and why?

I think the reason there aren't many tanking players is because DPS and to a lesser extent Healing is much more laid back than Tanking in general. Whenever I DPS/Heal I'm usually thinking about something else, or micro managing something. When I Tank, I have to FOCUS on my tanking otherwise people start complaining.
My favorite tank class would probably be a WoW Paladin (for EZ Mode tanking) or a Warrior for fun, more challenging tanking.
enforcer in anarchy online ,couple years ago,it used to be challenging and therefore fun.
Generation P
Paladin in FFXI was alot of fun.
Warden in LOTRO for my favorite. It has a lot of tanking options-single target, AE, defensive, dps, heals and so on. Also it's pretty heavy on the key strokes to get it done.
I've played tanks from EQ-WoW. Never tried the druid WoW tank though.
not sure if it counts but my favorite tank was the 55 monk in Guild Wars.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
Level 65 Warden on Laurelin rp server plus 65 Guardian and Hobbit Burgalar.
I'd have to say Brute from City of Villains, and now Heroes.
They were my favorite because they made you insane.
If you haven't played a brute, a brute does more damage the more they attack and get hit. This resulted in Brute Brain, Brute Rage, and some other less flattering descriptions.
It would push teams to the limit to fight whole rooms with others supporting in complex ways, buffing, DPSing key targets, sometimes healing, controlling.

I think the Guardian in Guild Wars 2 should be fun, its really caught my fancy, but most like myself havn't played it yet. I usually dont play tanks in MMOs, the idea never really struck me as a preferable role. But the Guardian has grabbed my attention like a Big Nog MMA grapple. I dont usually find MMO classes to really fit my personal tastes, so I'll make alts like nobodies business and compromise untill I'm content. The Guardian really touches everything on what interest me, it will be my first time tanking in a fantasy MMO but, my enjoyment of WHAT I'm playing always outweighs the idea of HOW I'm playing. I guess it can't be my favorite tank class becuase I've never played it before, but I've never played a class I've been so dead set on sticking with. It definatly stands out from any other class choice I've seen in a MMO and has dashed its way into my favorite choice of any MMO class.
That being said, my favorite tank that I've playing in a MMO so far was my many differnt ships that i tanked with in EVE =P. Nothing really pisses off a mob and tops the aggro meter quite like shooting at it with nukes.
plural.
nukes.
edited for clarity.
All the tank classes in Vanguard are really well done.
I also liked the Warrior and Paladin in WoW.

Warriors from WOW. Tried a fair amount of tanking classes in other games, but none really hit the right tempo of fun that Warriors had.
I want to enjoy Justicars and Riftstalkers in RIFT (due to being tanking Clerics and Rogues), but thus far they're a bit lacking (partly because the overall combat system isn't quite to WOW's level of polish...but what MMORPG's combat is?)

Arms warrior in WoW during TBC.
I hate having to have a tank drawing aggro by taunting then me being just another useless dps warrior so I tanked by out dps-ing everybody else.
Not really a fan of class based games but Commando in SWG back before the GCW officer reactive heal and mine spamming 'fixes' was pretty loltastic.

Pre ED and Global Defense Nerf , my controller illusion/rad City of Heroes , Tanking was never as fun after that .
Controll Mobs , Summon Pets , Run in with aura to Hold them , selfheal ... Debuffing .
Single Target long holds for aggro on bosses ...
Generally Chaos extreme ,all in one army , That people said WTF !!!! You are kidding me .
Ones that quickly come to mind for me are,
1. Dark Templar - Age of Conan - my favorite tank in any game I'd say
2. Black Orc - Warhammer Online
3. Savage/Warrior - DaoC
4. Bruiser/Monk - EQ2
5. Retribution Paladin - WoW
I've played a lot of MMORPGs as a tank, and it feels identical in most of them, save a few.
My favorite would have to be E/Me in Guild Wars. I took an (earth)Elementalist / Mesmer into Hero battles, and stood toe to toe with the other team while half my team caped objectives while i was using knock-down, blind, wards, and mantra of earth with Stone striker.
In RYL my tank style was completly pasive because i hit like truck dispite being a constitution warrior.
In EVE Online evasion tanking is king.
Just a few thoughts on tanking.
For me, it's the EQ1 Shadow Knight. I played a couple of other (non-tanking) classes before SK, but once I started playing one, it was pretty much the only class for me.
Aion templar was ALOT of fun to play, it was more like they dual wielded a sword and shield with all the shield attacks they had and reactive abilities just made them more fun for me.
tanked the most on an EQOA Shadow Knight (Death Knight master class).
My favorite tank of all time was the Ninja in FFXI. It was a tank that was meant to keep aggro but NEVER get hit. Not only do you evasion tank, you look awesome while doing it.

I normally don't make tank characters. Although, when I played Wow I had a feral druid and a arms warrior. But over all my favortie tank character was a SK ( Shadow Knight) in EQ2. Not only was it fun to tank in groups but was also a fun toon to level with.
my sword/shield armsman in daoc. the polearms armsman was best at inflicting damage, but the s/s was by far more flexible since for me the main role of a tank is to acquire agro and keep the enemy engaged. i used to enjoy hearing the sound of my shield blocking an enemy over and over.

Ret Paladins are a DPS spec. Prot Paladins are tanks.
Aside from that, Teras Kasi Master in PreCU SWG.
Iron Breaker, Warhammer.

I hate the game & everyone at Mythic for ruining it but man oh man was the IB a fun class! DPS was 'ok' but the CC those guys had made the class sooooooo much fun. Hold The Line was a great ability & I could probably punt people off cliffs or into lava for days on end & still giggle everytime.
I haven't played Vanguard enough, so might change my opinon, but considering purely class mechanics, abilties and pace of gameplay, I have to say WoW's warrior. There's many fun situational abilities, the priority rotation is (at least was in WotLK) interesting. The mobility abilities charge, intercept and intervene (heroic leap now too, I think) are so useful and fun, going through the battlefield ping pong style. Great balance of cooldowns as well. Just perfect tank, and takes some skill if to be played to full potential in chaotic situations. Bear always felt like second class warrior and paladin too passive and simple.
