Hear, hear. A player skill system would be preferred. Grinding through a character skill system once was enjoyable (EverQuest). Waiting through a character skill system once was tolerable (EVE Online). Since then, any vestiges of interest that I had in character skill systems has faded away.
I would just be lucky to find a game that had character options I actually enjoyed playing. More important than system, most MMOs I play have options that are so boring I can't even get into my character or the game.
All men think they're fascinating. In my case, it's justified
I would like to see more games how Asheron's Call (Before expansions) did... how it uses exp aquired and even though you reach a level cap, it takes a long time of exp gathering to max your skills to the cap... that is uses exp and not skill points...
I chose "Class + Skill Based System ---Level Capped" because that was similar to the original EQ. You had spells or skill that only your class (in general) had access to. You progressed through those based on your level, which was capped, but also, you had skills such as Sense Heading, that progressed the more you used them. And you also had alternate advancement points later on. I like the combination.
I would like a striclty skill-based system where players can dictate their abilities freely from a broad range of skills, but I also like a good variety of races to choose from, where the choice has meaning; FFA being the opposite of this.
I also like the idea of skill decay.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

It sounds like you are talking about old-school shooter games like Quake 2.

Skill based - uncapped with skill loss via decay and death penalty.

I think OP knows what I mean.
