Hi,

I'm currently conducting a research project (for my own purposes, no schoolwork here folks) delving into the good, the bad, and the just plain ugly, of <insert> your favourite massively multiplayer online game <here>.

I shall begin with a small list, and feel free to expand that list into your own experience(s).

  • Anarchy online

  • Saga of Ryzom

  • Ultima Online

  • World of Warcraft

  • Eve Online

  • Warhammer Age of Reckoning

  • Age of Conan

  • 2 Moons

  • 4 Story

  • 9 Moons

  • A Tale In The Desert (I, II, III and/or IV)

  • Star Wars Galaxies (pre-CU, pre-NGE, anything since)

  • Aion

  • Final Fantasy (XI and XIV)

  • Asheron's Call (I and II)

  • Crime Craft

  • Minecraft

  • Everquest (I and II)

  • Rift

And let's leave it there for now.  Please remember to post something you liked, and something you didn't like about the game you're responding to.  And if you have time, include something about the "immersion" factor, or "ambience" of the gaming world.  I particulary like Ryzom for its ambience, and FFXIV was the prettiest gaming engine I've ever seen.

Thanks so much for anyone who responds to this, in advance.  I'm most interested in hearing/reading what people have to say.

Ultima Online - I had only played for a very... VERY brief time to see what it was like. I had heard so many great things about it and wanted to see for myself. Lo and behold, being a spoiled MMO gamer, I couldn't get past the wonky interface and controls enough to really immerse myself into it. I wish I could've played this long ago, because I definitely did not give it the attention it deserves.

World of Warcraft - Ugh... It's a trap. With Catacylsm the game is nothing more than a glorified Facebook app (full of very angry people), streamlined into extremely simplistic, soloable, shallow content on a conveyer belt. Any sense of wonder I had when I first started playing is now gone, replaced with... what we have today. Boring, uninspired PvE content, and PvP content led by people who seem to know nothing about PvP at ALL.

Warhammer - Played for two days, then uninstalled. Felt as though it was a complete waste of my time and money. I thought the environments and character models were disgusting. The questing was boring, and so was the repetitious RvR content. No sense of ambience or immersion, I felt as though I was playing an indie F2P game. The amount of hype put into the game, and WoW-killer arrogance of the devs in general set my standards far too high.

FFXI - I had a decent amount of fun when I did play. The game is very player unfriendly, however. Setting the game up, installing it, and creating my account took ages. But it's an old game, so that's waivable. I loved loved LOVED the Job system, as well as the Races and the Mog House system. The combat system was alright; not bad, but not perfect. I did enjoy it's slow paced nature for what it's worth. The UI fits nicely with the game, but the controls take some getting used to if you grew up on WASD. The environments had my biggest gripe; they have what I refer to as bathtub syndrome, meaning they are just little bits of closed off areas with narrow exits leading to the next shallow little area.

FFXIV - Got into the beta, waited FOREVER for the download + install + patching, played for ten minutes. Never again.

Minecraft - Short addiction. I made a few things, but the game didn't stand out too much for me. Fun for a little while.

Everquest I - Installed, looked and felt ghastly, didn't feel comfortable at all, uninstalled.

World of Warcraft - The world of Azeroth is the most beautifully designed fantasy world I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The zones are interesting and have great geography and a really tight art style that works well and brings the atmosphere together in a consistent but varied way. No other MMO has achieved this for me in quite the same way. On the flip side the endgame content is tiresome and the quests can be very repetitive, the crafting is bland and housing would be a nice addition.

Minecraft - This game is addictive in a really great way. I love the freedom to make of the game whatever you want, and the detail in the geography and the variety of materials there are to play with. The night time cycle with monsters is a genius mechanic that sets the game apart from other building sandboxes. However I would appreciate a more complex monster AI that prompts more interaction with them, such as monsters that build structures and attack yours.

    Always read the small print.

I played FFXIV for a couple of months, and took a look originally in Open Beta.  I too found that it was slow paced, and instead of getting frustated by impatience, I simply found myself kicking back and enjoying the game for what it was worth.  A very beautiful gaming world with oodles of role play potential.  I think it's a shame it's dying in the ass so badly atm.  Now with the earthquake in Japan, they decided to be good citizens and shut their gaming servers down to conserve electricity, I think a week of downtime will see the game go downhill rapidly.  It's a real shame.

I'm /so/ glad someone /finally/ said they like the artistic style of WoW.  It's genius.  What people don't seem to get is that IT'S MEANT TO BE CARTOONY YOU NUMBNUTS.  Yeah, I played WoW after I played Ryzom, and I quite liked some of the areas ingame.

Yeah WoW has the best visual design of any MMO. I just wish they'd do what CCP did with Eve and do a complete revamp of the graphics engine to add detail. The cartoony style has aged well but it is starting to show its polygons in this modern graphical age.

Ultima Online - enjoyed it until my character was getting ganked at random.  Returned the game.  If they had created PvE-only server, I might have played it for a long time.

Everquest - had a great time for about 8 months in 1999 with it and could go on for hours talking about strengths and weaknesses.  A summary would be that it is a harsher, more primitive form of World of Warcraft.  Forced grouping was one of its greatest strengths and also one of its greatest weaknesses.

Dark Age of Camelot - slightly-softened EverQuest PvE combined with realm PvP.  The PvP there was the first time I saw potential in MMO PvP.  Sadly, Dark Age of Camelot never really pursued that potential, leaving us with zerg rush PvP.

Asheron's Call - There's not much I can say that's good about the game.  Nor all that much that was bad about it.  Nothing about it was engaging for me.  It was just Something To Do.

World of Warcraft - Very well executed EverQuest.  A light grind with bright imagery.  Weak on natural community-building.

EVE Online - Excellent economic model and illustrates how a game can pursue many different types of entertainment (i.e. pursue different professions).  Miner, hauler, salvager, mission runner, arbitrage, manufacturer, pirate, etc.  The PvP-centric attitude in the game netted a paranoia in the game that I didn't care for.  The time-based skill advancement approach was appreciated relative to grind-based skill advancement.

My most memorable experiences were in EverQuest.  It was my first MMO, and I was surrounded by people for whom it was the first.  The novelty of it was tremendous, and the game itself had a certain aura - partly because the world was so crowded and because we had to interact with each other.

The best MMOs I've played are World of Warcraft and EVE Online.  World of Warcraft was spit and polish, and EVE Online was rougher, but had more interesting gameplay.  I don't play MMOs anymore because they refuse to put in sufficient depth to the gameplay.  The focus remains on equipment and character skills.
