I've been trying to find a new MMO since leaving LOTRO over 2 years ago (after Turbine ruined it with the Mines of Moria expansion).
I tried: Eve, Darkfall, WoW, TCoS, EQ2, AoC, Fallen Earth, Wizard 101, Earth Eternal, Vanguard, DDO.
Rift is looking damn fine. There were queues this weekend to get into Faeblight, which is an NA RP-PvE server. I'm seeing friendly, happy people and the community reminds me of LOTRO at its best.
I ran Darkening Deeps with a PUG tonight and we had a fantastic run. We wiped something like 10 times on the spider boss until we cracked it, working together to find a strategy. This sort of thing is why I play MMOs.
The AH is vibrant. The crafting as an amoursmith is actually useful and fun. I'm loving the collections, public grouping with invasions and rifts that spice up questing and exploring, and of course endlessly pondering the souls and soul tree. Trion continues to impress as a company.
As an MMO package it does it for me.
In fact I... I think I'm in love.
Seriously, I'll be surprised to see a "big" drop in players after the first month. At least on Faeblight.
Rift is, and is going to be, a popular MMO.

Faeblight community is indeed great. I have basically stopped coming to the forums check my posts if you do not believe me because I am busy playing. People who are playing are usually not bothered to come to the forums and say so .The net effect is that those who are not playing will tend to post about the game and give a very different impression.
Yeah, I think you are generally right - which is why I posted.
There is a disconnect between what I see here (a lot of negative posts dissing the game) and what I am seeing in game (happy gamers) though I'm not saying Rift is without fault or that *everybody* should love it.
I think all MMOs see a fairly substantial drop after the first month. Rift is one of those games where the devs had to keep throwing servers at the situation to get over the huge wait times to play. Im talking 5 hours+ at launch. I couldnt roll on my friends' server at first becaue I simply couldnt devote hours just waiting in line. Thankfully I can now log onto Greybriar.
Rift could be a contendor. I like it. I enjoy the fact that I hae options. Some days I dont quest. I just run rifts all day for planarite and planar goods. Some days I just run battle grounds all day. Some days I decide to catch up on quests for zone faction. Some days I concentrate on harvesting and crafting.
I am very pleased with this game. It is, imo, the first successfull mmo in quite a long time. I really loved WAR, but it had no end game. Rift atleast gives you lots of things to do.
I just simply dont thikn that Rift will have huge player drops.
Completely agree with the OP. I am on Shadefallen, the other RP PVE server, and its always medium to high pop. On top of that I've been a level 50 mage for 2 weeks now and I keep meaning to play my warrior, rogue, and cleric alts but I find myself getting sucked into my mage and endgame play more often than not and the night is over before I realize it. This is a good thing.
Last night we, as a guild, fully cleared Fallen Cascade expert. It was long, we wiped a few times, but a complete blast trying to figure out each boss. Very rewarding. Other times we do the daily group quests and hunt Rifts. Or we hop into Warfronts. We share artifacts with guild members and we all share crafting mats. I haven't been in a guild this good since Lotro as well. Community is definitely "good" in Rift. Even helping random strangers in quick public parties is never a hassle.
That is a good point about the random parties you join with strangers. A few friendships have started by joining a small public group formed to hold back that invasion trying to kill your general goods vendor, followed by the "well, what the hell, since we are already grouped...."
I don't know if I should believe you guys.
I like the game and all but believing there is a server with a good number of people and the community within is nice is hard to believe.
I was a RP back in WoW and my experience in RP (quite a few years) is quite negative. People tend to dictate what is right and what is wrong, controlling everything, leaving no chance of character development or allow their characters to play with their own personality. People take RP so serious that blame the people behind their characters for doing stuff INSTEAD of blaming the character for beying himself/herself. People always like to play the bigger rolls and lack the ability to roll SIMPLE (but yet MORE fun) roles, like a simple guard, trader, armorsmith, weaponsmith, etc and etc. They all want to be the chosen ones or the mad overlord of all times.
With that said, I even didn't bother to learn the lore deeply, because I don't want to get too much involved and let my "RP" side say "feed me" and get disapointed with the people that try to RP.

I'm having a great time on Keenblade - Guardian and Greybriar - Defiant. The population is healthy. The community is helpful and mature. The game is great and Trion is all-over any issues that arise.
I'm in OTG (Old Timers Guild). If you are 25 or older check out our website and see if we offer what you're looking for in a guild.
Rift is done right and it's here to stay!
See you in game.

Just because it's an RP server doesn't mean you HAVE to RP. Finding a guild that suits your playstyle is key here. I just roll on RP servers more often than not because it's usually an "older" playerbase and more "mature" than the other alternatives. Dont' get me wrong, there are still immature people in general chat(mostly 1-9 chat which you can leave) and young people playing, but from experience, it's generally a better server choice. WoW I think is an anomaly and shouldn't be considered as evidence for anything, hehe.
One of the greater misconceptions of forum opinions.
The first question you must ask is when does a person post in a forum.
If it comes to trading playing time with forum time, then you're correct, and in fact, I rarely trade valuable playing time for forum time unless I'm not having fun (or angry about something) and come to post on a forum.
However, that said, many people like myself actually forgo some other unpleasant activity and post at forums when we're trapped at work, (or are out shopping with the wife) and can't play.
Therefore I have a large volume of forum posts, yet I assure you only a very small portion of those posts (10% or less) were made when I could have been playing.
If you were to look at my post history you'd see my volume way up on M-F's and way down over the weekend or holidays.
But to not totally derail this thread, I agree with the OP, things look pretty good and in my guild (one of largest on server) there's little talk of anyone being unhappy or planning on not going forward past the first month.
I can see myself lasting 2 or 3 for sure, then it will matter what there really is to do at 50 (I don't raid).

Well im in sunrest RP/ pVP server always at nay hour is from medium to high pop, in dispase of all the negative threadas an complainings and whinings, im too think that the drop of player after the free month wouldnt be big, because at any hour its dificult to find a low pop server, and on primetiems all the servers are from medium to full pop.
Of course thet would be adrop on poo after april 3rd, but wouldnt be big and wouldnt be necesary server merges at least for a copupl of months or so.
Some criticis are right, its wowifies, its a theme park , could b e repetitive, but so far its pretty fun to me, and i think that its fun and fresh air for a lot of players.
I'm on the Greybriar PVE server and find it to be filled with talented helpful players. I like the casualness this game offers. My Guild is very helpful. If i wasn't working I would be playing Rift. Since i am working I get to post here on the forums. I believe Rift will last a long time for those not in a hurry to the end game.. Trion has a lot of work ahead to keep the Rift community alive and prospering for years to come.. I plan to be here as long as Rift continues to keep me happy and contented...
Only Rugby releases the stress of Life.
11pm CST and most servers are still medium/high/full with queue's. For people that supposed to be doing a mass exodus on April 3rd they sure are getting their money's worth.
Anyone want to reverse that doom and gloom prophesy yet?
I'm not a fan of the game personally, but it's great that you like it and I hope it turns out to be what you want and need GL2U.

no because its still has the "new game" appeal. 4-5 months down the road no one will care about rift. Dont get me wrong I think its a good game for what it does, but time and time again this formula has been done. All have ended with the same result.

See that is actually where you are wrong. Time and time again, we have been delivered crap for 60 bucks plus 15 a month that is buiggy, unplayable, and lag tastic. This time we have been given a bug free at launch, beautiful, lag free with 100 people on the screen, new PVE experience. Doesnt hurt that the game has a certain fun factor and crack addiciton in the form of planarite and favor.
Rift is not going anywhere in 5 months, I hate to say it but we can already start saving our pennies for the first expansion that will release sooner than later, Ill give it one year before level cap is raised.
It seems everyone was all looking forward to Tera, Star Wars, and GW2. Now I bet those guys are freakign the fuck out already seeing a huge market share invested in Rift. GW2 will do ok as it is buy to play, but they better really deliver.
Under this theory GW2 and SWToR will fail. There is really no real logic here except it is new and will fail. There needs to be more content to your theory to be taken seriously.
I have nothing bad to say about Rift. Glad some people are finding a home. I'm already playing a few MMOs that I'm happy with. The only thing keeping me out of Rift is the subscription model.
now heres where your wrong. The fact that rift actually released in really good shape compared to the others is irrelevent.
These type of games dont last because the majority of their audience doesnt stay with games. They play for a while do a little raiding do a little pvp then they are ready to jump ship, and they will be jumping ship to play the "next" mmo. Tera, SWTOR, GWII, will be yanking rift players left and right.
Again I have nothing against rift, its just the way MMO's these days work.

These type of games dont last because the majority of their audience doesnt stay with games. I guess these type of games mean fantasy based mmos. I guess you play Eve and only games like Eve are real games. Only your game is an actual mmo that can keep a healthy population. My guess is whatever game you think is a real game actually has a much lower market share than Rift does. My guess is Rift has more people on 4 of its servers than most of the other mmos have combined.
I like rift too and i have played every single AAA mmo you can think of. I will bet that Tera, starwars, gw2 will be just as cliche as rift and perform alot worse.
OMG RIFT IS A THEMEPARK!!!!!
Tera perhaps, but I seriously doubt it beats GW2 or TOR. TOR inparticular is a Starwars game made by a well known and well respected company; those two things practically guarentee it will do better than Rift, even if only marginially so, unless it really sucks horribly.
Given all its hype and the large number of GW1 fans, GW2 would also have to fail pretty hard to get beat by Rift.
Ultimately we have to wait till the sixth month mark to get a true idea of Rift's long term success. Personally, I think Rift is likely to be around for a long time, with at least as many players as LOTR, and likely more.
Don't tell people the RP servers are doing well or all the idiots will roll on them. Apart from that good to hear you are doing fine.
I think the PVE servers will by and large retain a healthy population, though the PVP ones I'm not so sure.
Outside of Warfronts pvp is pretty freaking fun. Warfronts just prove you can stack a team. 10v10 and get a good result.
In open world most of these "OP classes" or classes labeled OP get owned. Any class is OP when it is 2v1 and they have a healer which is the case most of the time.
Real pvp'rs can not complain because this game is basically 100% reward. There are no real penalties for pvp deaths, so people who cry just amaze me.
I was a nay sayer about this game, and I got curious after hearing what many people were saying about this game. Looked at the soul builders, but never went into beta. On a whim I decided to pick up the game and join my old guild in the RP Shadefallen server.
I have to agree with the OP, and all those others that claim to enjoy the game. It is very polished and fun, regardless of what I am doing.
The game is very reward heavy, and death penalty is not enough from detracting you from taking risks. You level very quickly, and have much stuff to do even at end game... HOWEVER... I am unsure how the game will fare down the line because of these very things. High rewards and quick leveling means that it will be very easy to max out your characters. Once you have one of each archtype at max level and have bought all 4 roles and craft... there will be nothing left to do. Then, due to the quickness of leveling and how rewards are given, next expansion, unless they add more than 10 levels, and make the rewards greater than the epics of the prior level (which will imply mudflation), the game will be done all that more quickly...
The game is great as it stands right now, and if no one has tried it, I highly suggest they do, and that they play "vanilla Rift" before the next few expacs come out and ultimately sour this sweet game.
Had the game kept its polish, playstyle and fun factor WHILE making the climb to the top a bit slower, then this game would also have a solid future, but the speed at which this game runs will be its demise IMO.
This does not apply to me personally - I'm slow, I'm now level 27 and started playing during headstart so I'm not going to run out of content for a long time - but I think you have a very valid point.
It will be interesting to see what Trion do. They know where the bulk of the population is sitting and there are already rumours of content being added.
Looking at the map I was a little dissapointed to see that I had only a few more zones as a Guardian to explore BUT I feel that way because the zones keep getting better and better. Gloamwood was brilliant and now I am loving Scarlet Gorge. Both these zones have a strong 3D feel to them with Trion using vertical space very well.
