Why is 3D not really that 3D?

When I was a kid I would see movies where stuff would pop out at you and you would try to touch them b/c they looked so real and as if they where right in front of you, now it's just like a foreground and a background. Why is this?

Because, it's not really 3D. They are terribly converted 3D movies.

Real 3D will pop out at you if they want it to. Avatar in theaters was really 3D, so was My Bloody Valentine, Coraline, and some others.

Resident Evil wasn't, neither was Clash of the Titans, Alice in Wonderland, and most of Tron.

Personally, I've gotten to the point where I refuse to see a movie in theaters, unless it has a 2D version. With Tron being an exception. (which is why most of my list is pretty old) I got tired of the fake 3D crap and even the ones that are 3D, I got sick of wearing those stupid uncomfortable glasses.

    To the Movie Producers:

Just let me watch your movie, shove that 3D crap up your ass.

wonder if the new nintendo 3ds is 'real 3d'. I cant understand how that would work without glasses like you have in the movies

3d came and went in the early 80's and it will go away again soon enough.

It works, but if you have the 3D turned up to high (yes, you can set a level of 3D), you can get a massive headache.

I was talking to my tv repair guy about this the other day. I didn't realize there was actually about 5 different types of 3D. The stuff they are marketing now is just as you described. It doesn't pop out at you instead it just makes people appear in a foreground and you see the depth in the bacground. This 3D blows. Funny thing is they were talking about this on the radio today also. The radio guys said the same thing, give us real 3D or shove this crap up your...

I remember watching a movie when I was a kid and the camera went through a tree and everyone in the theatre put their hands up to shield their faces from being poked by the tree. It was awesome and the only kind of 3D I like.

To the poster who said avatar and bloody valintine were 3D, sorry bud, they were the shit 3D of foreground background depth on screen. I saw them both and felt totally ripped off for paying extra for the 3D experience. Those are the last 3D movies I will watch unless someone brings back the "hit you in the face 3D".

    God I hope so.

I got to play a 3d compatible PS3 game on a really expensive 3D tv, and it was cool for about 40 minutes, then I got carsick. Can't imagine people trying to play it like that for anything over an hour, and daily. You'll go crosseyed or develop migranes.

Apparently the same issue is affecting the 3DS as well.

Did neither of you guys watch Avatar?

I swatted at the lighting bugs a couple times instinctively. I felt pretty stupid aftwards, but I did it twice. lol

In My Bloody Valentine, the guy put a shotgun in your face. Everyone in the theater moved their heads back.

Maybe your theaters just sucked? Mine are pretty bad here, so I doubt that.

Well the only thing that seemed to come off the screen in Avatar was the floating things, other than that everything else just looked to be foreground/background. As far as Valentine it just didn't look good at all. It's possible my theatres got different versions or something. We weren't given the typical 3D glasses with the two colors we were given the ones that just look like sunglasses. The tv guy said that those were the ones just for foreground/background confirming my suspicions.

Also, it is possible it is my own personal eyesight and the 3D just doesn't work for me.
