Cool looking gear vs Miniscule stat upgrade?

gessekai332gessekai332 Member UncommonPosts: 861

After getting to lvl 50 i have discovered that lot of the endgame gear that you will spend hrs upon hrs trying to obtain, provide a pretty weak stat upgrade taken into account how much effort it requires to get it. At first glance +40 physical crit sounds like a hell of a lot, but its only a 1.5% increase in crit chance. The gear also doesnt look that amazing either. Given the choice would you rather grind for a piece of gear that makes you look like you are high level, or gear that boosts your stats up by just a tiny amount?

Most memorable games: AoC(Tryanny PvP), RIFT, GW, GW2, Ragnarok Online, Aion, FFXI, FFXIV, Secret World, League of Legends (Silver II rank)

I rather have the way it is right now... hard work equals reward.

Thank god there ain't no "sparkle sparkle" looking gear, just normal looking.

Thank you for your opinion though. I know a game that CONTAINS the things you wish based on your post, not much grind, easy granded gear and "good looking/sparkle sparkle appeal" (of course, it won't be good looking when you see half a million people looking exactly the same like you). If you want to know the game, please tell me here and I will answer.

Thank you again for your opinion and contribution to this community.

Rift armors are basically plan, dull and frumpy:

Even at high levels you basically look homeless, so might as well grind for that 1.5%.

i think you misunderstood my post. I never said that grinding for gear is a bad thing. i have been playing mmo's for over a decade now- its one of the main components of an mmo so I wouldnt be playing one that didn't have it. The purpose of the thread was to ask the question whether most people would like to grind for looks or grind for relatively small increases in stats(which this game does worse than most others).  Also, just because you grind for looks doesnt mean everyone will look the same in the end. Thats only the problem in games that skimp out on their art departments and are too lazy to create variety in gear looks. If you look at guild wars for example, it still has a relatively healthy population of people for a game so old, that grind purely for gear that makes them look nice (with no actual stat change). And in that game, they have so many different elite armor sets out there that you dont run into the problem of having everyone looking exactly like you.

This kind of mentality is how I think today's mmo's should provide the "carrot" to their players. Make them grind to obtain variety or different choices rather than grinding to get to a certain tier of a equipment just so you can grind to get another certain tier of equipment. When this happens, you just get people that will try to skip everything early in the first place, b/c it is a waste of time, and just go for the final item instead. I feel like we need to go back to the time where when you grinded for something, you knew your hard work was well used and wont become obsolete in a couple of days.

I'm so glad I didn't bother buying Rift. I like flashy arrmor that is ridiculously overdone for end game gear (at least), and I would take a stat loss to wear cooler looking gear as long as it didn't completely cripple my ability to play the game.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

Oh, then I must say that I grind for NEITHER of those things. I grind for the fun of it, for the challenge, not for the gear itself or stupid stats.

Oh and for those that think "good looking armor means your the best player, so the gear must look sparkle or else it sucks", who told you that you must have better gear than the NPC's? You looked at the NPC's?

    - "The NPC's have better gear looking than me"

WELL, who told you that your most important than the NPC's around you? People forget that, in a MMO, it ain't your duty to be the main hero or "choosen" one. Your just a "add" in that world... like a single soldier in a army. No one is going to give sparkle sparkle gear to a soldier... they will give them boots, pants, a shirt, bullet proof/protection gear and a gun. Good to go. The Generals/etc are the ones that have the sparkling medals and wardrobe. Those generals/etc ARE the NPC's. Your a soldier. You will never be a general/etc. I think the feeling of beying "the choosen one" is wrong in a MMO environment, when millions of other characters(players) have that title. That is why I like this MMO's gear. Simple and no sparkle.

    - "The NPC's told me I was a choosen one, by the Gods, your argument is invalid"

Yeah... if your a guardian and grabbed that statement, did you noticed the numerous dead bodies outside? Yeah, they will ALL be choosen ones. Oh and screw that lady that jumps for each new player that enters saying "OH lordy lord bless ya! Horray the prophecies crappy crap your special". If you notice, she says that 100 times a minute, just create a random char in the guardians, sit down and enjoy the esteric woman, yelling at each new player and literally walking away to jump again at a new one.

If your a defiant and grabbed a "close" statement, then you did noticed the other capsules with more "choosen ones" beying reborn with souls from other guardian choosen ones and a few NPC's estracting more souls from many choosen ones.

Your a soldier and you will like it.

Hmm may work on other games, but here I'm the Ascended, therefore I am the HERO! Give me the best looking gear!

I personally don't think any of these are models are bad or frumpy end game. My heart bleeds for WOW people who need bigger shoulderpads and rediculously long swords. I guess i'm just simplistic. *shrug*

That's exactly what I've been saying for a while now. For some reason, someone got it into their head that players need gear with better stats as a carrot to keep them playing. Well, Guild Wars has proved otherwise, and very solidly.

I personally like how most of the armor looks (yes some of it is ugly, but most of it looks good).  Plus every small bit of stats helps, hell an extra 3 endurance just from the collector's edition run gives me an extra ~60hp.  Not much, but it has saved me more than once lol (tanking 30+ invasion mobs at once or tanking a zone boss).

But people usually have vastly different tastes, so it is a win-lose situation for armor designers most of the time.  No way to please everyone.

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

I do find myself skipping certain minor upgrades, because I hate the look vs. what I already have. It has been happening more and more as I continue to play the game. They really need a costume tab or player reskinning (see Aion) along with some better looks in general.

Visuals matter. If they didn't, there would just be one basic look for each class and that would be that. How much they matter varies from person to person. I believe a fairly good portion of players will find poor looking armor to be a factor that contributes to their decision to quit a game. Not the only reason, but it's effect is far from minimal.
