During PAX East, MMORPG.com Industry Relations Manager Garrett Fuller had the opportunity to visit with the good folks from Nexon and a chance for a look at the upcoming Dragon Nest. Garrett also ran through a Vindictus demo showcasing new content and zones. Check out Garrett's impressions of Dragon Nest and Vindictus. Leave us a comment or two as well.
Nexon had a great booth at PAX East, two of them as a matter of fact. The company that is known for Maple Story really has been stepping up in terms of games lately. Dragon Nest may look a bit anime for some people, but the game play is fast paced and well organized. The company also showed off the new content for Vindictus with a new city and new zones for players to explore. Nexon remains a pioneer in the FTP space and continues to bring much stronger games to the market.

I played Dragon Nest when it was on the Korean demo, and I have to say that the combat, the skills and everything related to action is 10/10. You just need to see the gameplay in youtube, with players using the 2nd stages of the class they use and you will get that feeling we love --> "I wanna play this game NOW!"
BUT, the main problem of this game is the instances. If you start playing the game alone and you don't know anyone, you just feel completely alone when fighting, unless you get someone to team up you with that you don't know. That's the same problem in Guild Wars (1), but in Dragon Nest most of the instances, before you enter in a dungeon, are so damn short and so many that it makes the same problem become even worst. The only place where you can meet other people ocasionally is in cities.
So, I give this game a 6.5/10. But if you have someone to play with (or even an entire guild to play with you), the ranking gets higher (8/10), because the dynamic combat and the awesome struggle and power from the skills when you play with other people pay for the problem I said before.
About Vindictus, I haven't played it yet, but i wanna play that game since it was announced. I don't know if it has the same problem as Dragon Nest, but the awesome graphics, the ability to use a lot of things from the environment as weapons, and the realistic graphics + blood, it deserves a shot from everyone.
BTW, where is Continent of the Ninth (C9)? I lost track of it some time ago, but I think it's in the same boat as these two!
Why the heck are people using FTp for Free To Play? F2P is so much better.
the abbreivation FTP is already widely used around the internet for something completely different. A Search for FTP isn't going to bring up MMORPG.com or any other gaming site.
F2P will. It isn't used for anything else.
I hope this wasn't a gaming industry decision to brand this type of game service "FTP".
Gel214th, you are so right!
Example: "as a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) game"
That doesn't work... stop it and use F2P!
yeah! WTF
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
I've played Vindictus and the game is beautiful and fun for the first few levels then it becomes repetitive. Same with DFO and Dragon Nest. Altough, I enjoyed Dragon nest more then I did Vindictus. I played Dragon Nest during the Korean Open Beta. In the end, they all end up being a grind. If you enjoy that type of stuff then have fun.
I no longer support Nexon and affiliates so I wish everyone to stay away from the games they host, but that's just wishful thinking.
There is one more game that can be compared to those mentioned two: Divine Souls from Outspark Inc. All those non-target fightings, lots of combos so difficult for players with stiffy fingers (like me, lol) I admire Dragon Nest as well, and play it along with Divine Souls. Btw these two games are more alike than Vindictus, since both DN and DS have Fatigue feature (points you need to enter any instance), and huge resemblance in gameplay and interface. Thus, my day starts with DN and ends with DS )
