I didn't want this to get lost in the News thread of similar title (Five things Rift got right), but last night I ran into a major Rift zone battle last evening that had to easily have about 100 people on screen (50 Defiant, 50 Guardians) and I experienced no lag.
I was surprised, I have a decent gaming laptop, and when I played Aion I found myself totally crippled by lag during the big fights, however last evening things were totally smooth and I never had any issue. (other than my penchant for tab targeting had me "accidently" attacking the Guardians who we were "cooperating" with us to take down the Rift boss and I guess I might have killed a few when I noticed they had low health)
Maybe I didn't really have 100 people on the screen, but it was at least 60+ so i was wondering what some of the largest Rift battles people have experienced so far and how was their experience with lag.
Maybe I was just lucky, let me know here what your experience has been. (not in beta btw, I'm really only interested in post launch)

I've noticed it's not what i would call lag free, but there is certainly less lag than I expected.
the only time i've seen any lag is during one of the public boss events and even then it was not crippling.
and kyleran i know you play(ed?) a lot of eve so you must know the meaning of crippling lag *grin*
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Very little lag but that does tend to get worse as any MMO goes on. Lotro for example now takes an age to load and you get some short lagging, which hardly ever used to happen.
Not sure I can give much credit to Rift here. The newer a game the less lag it tends to have with a lot of players on screen, this has been the trend for 10 years now. It is more about new technology than anything else.
Oh, so now the bashes about the game engine being 9 years old are irrelevant?
Lets face it, if the game was merely an upgrade of WAR with better visuals, as the graphics engine would suggest, where is the lag between keystrokes and things actually happening and why is the combat so responsive?
Can't have it both ways I'm afraid.
Yes, generally the game is good with a crowd on the screen. Though I do remember one time where I had crippling lag on a public boss encounter, but frankly there were way too many people from both factions with a lot of adds pulled in as well (if I ventured a guess, I'd say easily more than 100 player+mob models, but I can be wrong, you know how these things go :P)... Not to mention that was a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't seen a replication of that since then.
agreed. Have not noticed any lag whatsoever in RIft. Smooth as silk, and fun.
Not sure I've seen this trend you're speaking of, last big title for me was Aion and it had horrible lag in its rift fights, was almost unplayable for me.
And as someone mentioned, as a former EVE player, I've seen some horrific lag, esp in the big 500 vs 500 battles.

Was it lag(ms) or was it frame rates(fps)? Did MS go up or did you see FPS go down? I never have these issues so it makes me wonder if it is technical or is it really server side.
DAoC was better than WAR in terms of lag
Yup. I was going to type "gasp" 100 people on screen at once? Have we finally caught up to 1999 EQ raids and 2001 DAoC seiges? Wait no.. those games had 300+ people...
Keystroke lag is taken care of by the silly global cool down. When everything pauses for 1.5 seconds there's less chance of input lag appearing.
Actually, DAOC's Realm Relic Keep raids frequently turned into unplayable lag fests for me, my computer (which was middle of the road) just couldn't handle them well.

In old emain when Hibs would pile into the the top building of the first little fort devide thing i know lots of people who lock up when we tried to enter the room. And lets face it DAOC was an amazing game but the spell graphics werent anywehre near rifts
Er.. maybe nowadays, but at the time DAoC had next gen quality graphics.
DAOC was ahead of the pack, 'next gen' only exists in marketing blurb next to 'iconic' etc, so overused the term is meaningless.
