Skill or Equipments?

I think that some players are both skilled, and are also loaded to buy the nicest equipments in an MMO game, especially in an MMORPG. While some, are both not so skilled and underequipped. But with these two extremes aside, would you consider yourself a player who relies mostly on skills and try to win battles even if slightly underequipped? Or are you the one who relies on money and equipments because you aren't skilled enough?

Played: Runescape, Adventure Quest
Currently playing: Aika Global, Atlantica Online
Waiting for: Cardmon Hero, Dynasty Warriors Online

I think anyone who is competitive, regardless of skill, would always go for the best equipment.

I don't have the time or the ability to shut off the part of my brain that starts whining about too much grind.  So even in games like GW, where getting max equipment isn't that hard, I'll still sometimes tool around on a character with non-max equipment, and try to make up for the lack with skill.

I don't LIKE spending a lot of time to make my character competitive.  Possibly why I love board games so much.  I don't have to play 80 games of Risk, doing special Risk raids to get my full Risk gear so I can properly take over Australia. :T

... and most people would say I'm very competitive.  :)

lol, I suppose that's where I'm the opposite. I enjoy spending time to make my character more powerful and more competitive.

Sometimes I do really weird things in games because I'm weirdly neurotic about not wanting to spend points in a non-optimal way.

Like playing an MMO and not assigning any of my +stat points, and finally way later, realizing 'God, this is getting insanely hard, what's wrong?' and remembering I have a whole game's worth of skill points and stat points to assign. :)

... or the way I played KOTOR, which is I NEVER leveled up unless it literally became too hard to do an encounter, because I realized that leveling up gives you a free heal.  So I treated it like I had a pocket full of free potions. ;)

On one boss fight, I leveled up like 7 times in a row, mid-fight. :)

I'm looking for options 3 - A mix of both. Sadly there is little to motivate me to do grindy content for gear, if that's the only option for getting the best gear, I'm unlikely to be fully geared out, and try to make up for it with skill. Games really need to make getting the best gear more entertaining, less grind, less raiding (which given the way some guild manage it, they feel like a grindy job) more great gear coming from playing the actual content.

the issue about gear vs skill is weird.....

lets say player A and player B are both lvl 100, A is full pvp geared (with low lvl skills) and B has all skill maxxed while wearing crappy self crafted gear. If the game is gear bassed, player B wont have a chance against player A because A has full pvp gear; however, if the game is skill based, player A  wont have a chance because player B has all skills mastered? what about the crappy gear that doesnt protect player B?  any critical hit or a good combination of blows could kill him pretty quick even with crappy skills due to low defence and  low resilience......

i think it should be based on both gear, skill, along with more tactical combat (you know how to fight, then you have chances to win... not just  the fastest button masher wins no matter how good gear or skills you have...)

I'd prefer a mix of both too.

ding ding we have a winner... as it happens.. its because of things like that, that i only do PVP on games that do not have levels..  PVP + Levels = Rubbish game.. no exceptions.. if your going to have PVP in a game then it should be fair, in that you live or die by your actions.. not by your level advantage or gear of overpowerful uberness..  which is why i only PVP in Eve.. .. and before the fall.. Planetside..  image

if it's only about skill ; Then progression and large worlds are not required. Which equates to bland gameplay against a bunch of douche bags.

MMOs are about large persistant worlds with depth and storyline; and treasure...... otherwise whats the point. I can play any insta gratification arena game at the drop of a hat.

large persistent worlds yes..  depth ? im guessing you mean decent gameplay/combat mechanics... as for storyline.. meh.. never read the stuff they put out tbh, its just a fluff thing, and fortunately, just an optional extra.... treasure.. loot drops etc, i think we've all at some point had the ridiculous loot drops from mobs etc,  like, where did that animal keep a sack of loot on its person.. and why does it have a suit of plate armour? .. treasure.. in games, can be totally daft. image

i do prefer skill based games, having nice items is good, but they shouldnt give you an overwhelming advantage, it should be more about your own ability to outthink your oponent(s) and good teamwork. image

I think using the term skilled in the context of an MMO is really more about ego. How much "skill" does it take to press the button, none its about pressing the button at the right time, and thats situational awareness. I know its popular to simplify vocabularly on the internet, but to me, too much ego is floating around in MMO's.

Progression wise though it should be more about player achievement and less about what gear you have, while gear is a milestone on how and what you can achieve over time it shouldn't be the only defining attribute of your character.

By your definition it requires zero skill to be the world champion at Chess.

Personally I define skill as (a) making the right decision and (b) executing that decision.

    • Making the decision is tactics or strategy.

    • Executing the decision is usually referred to as twitch skill.

Obviously some games favor one or the other, but the point is MMORPGs clearly involve skill (just as it takes an enormous amount of skill to be world champion at chess.)

If I could have my 20-something reflexes back (which I wasted on Tetris, pinball and Defender) I'd give you kids a run for your money in a skill-based system.

Alas, my 45-year-old fingers won't get the job done.  So, sadly, I vote "quipmentz"
