IMHO yes its worth it. And its not comparable to the other MMORPGs, which makes it interesting. You have so much freedom of choice to continually change your character to fit your mood and playstyle. You are not committed from the start to a certain career or class.
I would be very wary of this game and go for the free trail of the game before you make the decision to buy it. It is an expensive game to buy and the monthly subs are the highest of comparable MMOs.
I played the game for over 2 years (since the beta 3 test) and towards the end found it a very frustrating, and boring experience. You should be aware that the servers do experience large amounts of lag most times during the day, and the (depending on where you ar eplaying from), the nightly server restarts can often taken an hour and half - or up to 4 hours if they are doing a patch (which is a frequent occurance these days).
SOE to their credit are doing a lot of work to fix the multitude of bugs in game, but they do struggle at times and the player base (those that are left) has gotten used to this as a fact of life about the game. Server crashes have become more frequent since the new combat system was implemented but again, SOE are attempting to rectify these and other issues on an ongoing basis.
Overall though, the game is enjoyable to play for the new character but can get boring once you have done the missions and progressed to a master level. To advance, grinding in the game is almost a given so be prepared for lots of repetitive tasks and running backwards and forwards, though grouping does help and in most situations is a must (SWG doesn't lend itself to soloplay).
Leveling up is such that if you decide to try another profession, and then wish to change professions, you must drop most of the existing skills you have and then grind out experience in your new profession. If you decide though to go back to your original profession, you must drop your new skills and grind back the experience again in your original prof (the game doesn't allow remembered experience or skills).
If you are going to get heavily in the game it's almost a must to join a Player Association (esp for grouping purposes) and its also advisable to sign up to the forums - this is the best place for information about the game and the server that you choose to play on.
But I reiterate, if you can land a trail version of the game, grab it and try it before you lay down any cash. SWG may not be to your liking.
When I played the SWG trial version, it was the first mmorpg I ever played. That game was sooo laggy in towns but I have to admit that I loved it. Adventuring on the speed bikes to far unknown places...man It was awsome. This is one game you really got to try. I might subscribe to SWG this summer....and maybe Anarchy Online.

If you're going to try both, try Anarchy Online first. Do the froob thing (froob=Free Noob). Because once you've tried SWG, you won't be able to live with AO's graphics.

Erillion
do you think they would offer free trial? or do they have free trial already?
live and let live
In the past they offered a free trial about once every 6 months. There is no active trial right now.
