from what I can tell the higher level abilities dont seem that impressive, I figured the game would eventaully steer away from just auto combat since autocombat without many special moves gets old real quick
I noticed that instead of having all that many special moves for most lines, they simply upgrade the ones you have
is this system fun, it doesnt seem like there is much to look forward too
Im wondering if the weapon powers aka powershot are useful and fun to use, or if they are a let down as they seem to be
note: this is no way related to the CU so dont argue about it in this thread pls. thanks

It used to be like when you got to the higher levels and master professions you got new special attacks and abilities. Now the combat is just kind of boring looking. It's not as bad with melee as it is ranged.
Oh? I don't recall it too boring when I was solo'ing about 15 rebels at a time yesterday for faction. Died some, won alot, got incapped here and there. I am not sure how the new combat system where you are mortal is less exciting the god moding with doc buffs and stims on the old system. Knowing I am not gonna die no matter what I do was boring, feeling mortality has made it exciting again. If your combat is boring, its probably because you chose an easy target, I suggest you find something abit more challenging.
And so you know, I am a carbineer, all my combat is ranged.

I haven't noticed a ton of difference between the lower ones and the higher ones yet but I am still fully getting my head wrapped around the new system. And since I respected to carbineer from commando (a profession with no special attacks) I didn't get to fully see what the lower level attacks do. From what I have SEEN however I would say there isn't a breaking difference in them, but someone may correct me on that.

I don't think you understood my post.
I have to agree that combat is boring looking now. It's hard as hell and you spend a lot of time wondering if you're going to make it out alive, but it's no longer all that fun to WATCH anymore.
Are the elite combat professions' specials worth getting? Ummm... YES. The most effective, most devastating specials are all locked in the elite combat profession trees. They may not be nearly as cool as the old ones were, and may not look like much, but they are still well worth working towards.
I'm a Rifleman 2-3-2-2 so far and am seeing far better results from my specials than I did as a Master Marksman.

Call me wierd I guess but even that looks good again. Since the last patch Pike is as graceful as TK used to be. I imagine TK has gotten alot of their beauty back, which I dropped because I hated the profession post CU. I watch cygnia and she has them silly looking red ribbons back now and all the fancy moves while working her pike.
They changed alot of the animations with last patch to correct that.

Im a master pikeman and I agree. It's cool now. I will admit, UnarmedHit3 was my favorite move of all time.
Yes they have. Come hunt with me and Cygnia this week and you can see.

It will be back, don't worry.

I was MBH / MPistol / Nov Medic prior to the CU
I am now MBH / MPistol / CM 4/0/0/0
I solo CL 82 critters and NPC's on a regular basis. I will state the following:
Prior to the CU for PVP the strategy was simple: Get buffs, go join solo group, get quenker/mok/whatever mission, go to lair, use aoe attack till all enemies are dead. Heal up if necessary. Take more missions until buffs wear out.
Now it's more complex:
Special moves rule. If you don't use them you're really not fighting at your peak performance level. Most of the Elite Proff special attacks that existed pre-CU are still in the game Post CU, they just have different effects. Blind, Intimidate, KD and Roots are extremely useful as are Dizzy and Stun. The higher the 'ability' the better because it will 'stick' better on your target. Some lines just improve now, others change.
I liked the old combat system. I like the new combat system. I'd rate them as: Different but equal in fun-factor.
The single biggest difference is that you can't go gangbusters on a lair anymore, you have to take on high CL critters one at a time or you'll get munched fairly quickly. I can take down two CL78's at a time but that's about the limit. If I try to AOE a lair I will die very quickly Which, imo, is as it should be. I always found the 'god mode' game kind of lame.
So, in summary:
Yes, the 'higher level' powers are worthwhile, even necessary in some cases. Most of them have enhanced effects over the 'lower' versions and many have enhanced duration as well. A "Stopping Shot III" is far superior to just plain old "Stopping Shot".
Now, if you have a low end power that doesn't have a high end enhancement but is useful to you, by all means use it.
But just 'autoattack' with no specials is going to get you killed against top-end encounters.
