It doesn't look Korean to me. Sure, there are some Anime influences here and there but they seems more Japanese than Korean to me. The Asura is the race that could have been in any Manga or manhwa.
Most of the game however have excellent art (and I BTW like manga). I don't personally think that the asuras really fit in but that is just me.
I really do like the norn art even if the male norns looks somewhat odd, I can't really put my finger on it.
Still, GW 2 have the best art I seen in a MMO if you ignore tha asuras. Really good.
Sorry about that, just woke up, looked alright to me then.
Edit: looks like Korean with some fantasy type settings thrown in to me.
Hehe, morning g'mornin', Whilan.
Imo it's pretty damn rich. I am a sucker for immersive environments and GW2 looks to be a complete eyegasm in that sense.
Looks to be very detailed realism with a slight touch of expressionism and I'm looking forward to roam around in that world. That's why I complain so much about certain design decisions they made in regard to game mechanics. Teleporting gallore, no pvp in that open world, portals with loading screens, etc. *stomps head on desk*
I know ..."You can't always get what you want", ... but I sure as hell will bitch about it.

It's the size of their bodies, just looks too massive. Almost like they've been hitting weights since when they were babies.
The proportions of the character/creature design takes some liberties that could be considered leaning towards manga eg skinny-long legs etc, but overall I'm very fine forgiving that considering the watercolor atmosphere and details emulating a painting... tbh really impressed is all I can say. I'm sure the actual game will have many jaw-dropping sights.
There are some influences in the art from korean games just as in GW, however I don't think it's fair to say "it looks korean".
The Koreans ripped their style from the Japanese. The influences more seems closer to Final fantasy or something to me.
For some reasons do GW2s art style remind of of the Anime series "El Hazard" (not the crappy Tv version).
Particularly the wilderness is breath taking. The cities doesn't really look like real cities to me, the only GW city thta felt real was Kaeneng. Too litle focus on where people live and too much on public buildings and places.
Of course do this go for most MMOs. I blame it on the fact that most MMOs are American made and that the yanks never been in a intact medievil town so they have no clues how it should look.
I reccomend a vacation to Valletta (Malta, 16th century for the games that have some gunpowder weapons included) or Wisby (Sweden, 12-14th century), it will show you how cities should look. Yes, there are many more good cities but I can only reccommend places I actually been at.
Let's be fair. The Japanese people PAID the Koreans to draw in their style.
If you look at older anime, a LOT of it, the animation was actually done in Korea. Now I think Korea is too expensive for them and they get it done at even cheaper countries.
There's some pretty blatant artstyle stealing from both the Koreans and the Chinese of various manga artists, but some of them have their own art style, which just holds sort of stylistic similarities, rather than being a straight rip.
... just like your hobby-area of expertise appears to be Medieval weaponry, mine is manga. Which normally sounds like a badge of shameful geekery, but c'mon, I'm on a site dedicated to MMORPGs. It's not like I'm any geekier than most of the other people here, haha.
edit: To be on topic, I think GW2 has the best team of concept artists working on any game out there. I think while the in-game graphics engine is pretty solid, a very large part of what makes it look good is being carried on the work of the artists, rather than the graphics engine. Which is good, because it means the game should be able to run on less-than-optimal systems, and hopefully with the (relatively) low polygon character models, maybe that will help with really smooth super-massive W v W battles.
It's true that it isn't on the cutting edge of graphics (Even for an MMO), but right now we have no idea how stable and smooth the engine is, and what they're optimizing it for, or what it will look like when it's fully optimized.
Personally, I'd prefer if they put as much burden as possible upon the art design itself, so it runs smoothly and well even in really massive battles with over a thousand people in it.
From what I've seen so far, I'm pleased with the art style. At least the characters are attractive visually. Can't tell you how put off by, for example, LotRO's characters were to me, and Ryzom just gave me such a strange sense of unease that I couldn't even play it. Vibrant colors are fine with me in a fantasy. Yes, the eye candy DOES help me stay in an MMO. I do hope they go for more body type customization, though. I'm sure folks still remember the ability to make fat Mon-Cals in SWG, or really over-the-top (pun intended) females in Horizons. It may not be politically correct, but it's fun, and isn't that what gaming's about?

Once again, in the demo all the waypoints were unlocked, in the actuall game they won't be unlocked until you walk to them. No teleporting to places you haven't been to before. Major cities connected by asura gates so players can try out other race areas easily.
PVP belongs seperate from PVE so people who want to fight other players can and those of us who don't want to don't have to. PVP in open world equals griefing which Arenanet is completly opposed to. Loading screens mean more art work. Stop complaining.

I can't help but side-bar the topic for this: You are way less geeky than some of us here, particularly me... I majored in Medieval Studies (including weapons/combat) while in college AND my hobbies include large volumes of manga reading. And to make matters even better, I can't stop smiling as I type this; Meowhead you have made my day better by admitting to geekery
Ok, back to topic: I love the art-style of Anet, I've turned some of my screen-shots from GW1 into posters that adorn my walls (well, not really just screen-shots, I did shoop them up before printing), so I'm waiting oh so impatiently for GW2 to come out so I can make new ones.

Oh I agree wholeheartedly.. but imo this is a long-running problem with fantasy as a whole.
Just take a look at a typical D&D village or town map. They all resemble either a wild west town or a bit imaginative US suburb fluffed up with "medieval-looking" buildings. They're just too spacious. In middle ages people huddled together for protection and warmth, building one house atop another and you couldn't find a straight street unless the emperor himself razed half the city in order to build an avenue for his victory processions.
From my limited recent RPG experience I'd say that it is only Bethesda which does it at least half-right in their Elder Scrolls games.
The landscapes and cities look soooo good. The character art looks out of place compared to the surroundings; almost like they are superimposed. I hope it gets a bit more integrated in th ecoming months.
All I keep thinking of whenever I hear 'painterly' and 'artisinal' is the movie 'What Dreams May Come', with Robin Williams walking about in his afterlife...a world done as an oil painting. Very cool look and effect.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Did you have to repeat yourself, did you have to repeat yourself?
And could you poke around your memory to find where you have seen such an artstyle before?
This is not a game.

Nah, not seeing it.
This is not a game.
I really don't see how that can be

For characters.
Little bit at the beginning here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUSag9O_Pig
Reminds me of War of angles here
http://news.mmosite.com/content/2010-10-15/gamigo_adventure_in_war_of_angels_obt_live.shtml#ue_pic 3rd picture down
The background reminds me of Lotro a good bit.
I will say that the game looks better in character design then War of angel even if it reminds me of it.

I hope they do another pass on the shaders for the fire effects, but besides that, I really love the art direction.
