I really liked the setting above all, it had a very well done mature atmosphere, and the characters and plot were a lot more interesting than anything in Oblivion.
I remember the game also had quite a few tough decision points that didn't really have a clear good or evil path, it kind of plays with your judgement a bit. I recall a lot of the time whatever you chose, it somehow came back to bite you in the ass at a later point in the game.
True enough it isn't open world, but areas do open up a bit after the tutorial and act 1, if you felt A1 was to linear. There are also plenty of sidequests to do if you don't want to rush to finish the main quest line.
i'd say give it more than an hour though if your going to give it another go, probably most of that hour is spent in the tutorial and maybe just the beginning of act 1.
If you do play it again, make sure to download the enhanced edition if you have the original version, and also the Flash mod, which is now included in the latest box version.
I personally could not stand the game. I played it for a few hours and stopped. Hadn't played it since. I think it got a lot of attention because of the sex.
sigh.
Seriously, it wasn't all that. Plus real sex is way better.

Lol.. obviously.. Is it a distant memory or what?
Really though, I found The Witcher to be one of the best RPG's I have ever played. The combat was fun, and it was one of the few new age RPG's that REALLY immersed me in the world. The sex options were hilarious as Geralt usually ended up speaking what was on my mind anyway. Overall the game was just really raw and awesome all together.
If you live in NA try downloading the Director's cut patch, as well as the two mods where you have access to your bank and the rest option right from your inventory. Makes the game that much better. Also be sure to play the game on the hardest setting as well, makes it more realistic.
Also to properly understand The Witcher 2's story right from the start, you will have needed to play the first one.

Three years ago in the gaming world; yes, it is considered a distant memory.
It was one of the worse RPGs ive played in the last five years.

Primarily for me it was the choices. In most games, even when story centric choices are available, they are black or white, generous or selfserving, good or evil, etc. The witcher explores the grey area in between extensively.
For example there are two possible factions to support. One is openly dedicated to preserving the law, protecting the community from the monsters that plague the land. They are also unrepenting racists, forcing nonhuman sapients to comply with crippling laws, and mercilessly hunting down those that resist. The other faction is mostly comprised of these nonhumans, fighting for freedom and equality, but have long since resorted to targeting innocents in terrorist attacks.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway

i sided with the scio'tel on the first, long playthrough. i had lots of trouble with random crashes in chapter 4. at some point along the way, i figured out what was causing it and remedied the situation. anyway, with teh choices, i liked that the consequences or advantages to making the choices weren't always immediate. near the end of the game, my choices came back to haunt me. siding with the scoi'tel prolonged their freedom from attacks but that all came a halt. i also had alvin stay with shani. she seemed to be more interested in his well being more than anything, and also wanted him to have a life that a child deserved.
the second playthrough will be sided with the humans. i've already had alvin go with trish. he hates me now. perhaps he'll appreciate it later on. i'm still up in the air as to what to do about berrengar. i let him live on the first time around. he wasn't very helpful during the fight against azar javed. he was killed within the first 30 seconds of that bullshit fight.
when it comes to the sex and sex cards, i can care less about it. yes, the game itself is a bit linear. however, the game's storyline sticks to the books quite well. the games' creators didn't go renegade on the characters, certain ideas, and stayed true to the series. i plan on picking up the second installment.

Probably because of the story, voice acting, and the fact that you can nail anything with two legs.
I couldn't get through the entire thing, namely because of the inventory hassles and such, but it was a decent game.

I thought it was a terrible game, right along with Dragon Age.
Another Cookie Cutter Generic RPG. Nothing special.

I didn't like it at all
