Rift: Free Mobile Authenticator for Droid

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Rift dev team has announced that a new free mobile Rift authenticator for Android devices is now available in the Marketplace. The Apple version for iOS devices 3.0 and higher is in its final stages of development and will be released soon. The device gives players an extra layer of security against getting their accounts hacked.

Two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security making it much harder for insidious individuals to gain unauthorized access to your account, even if your computer has been compromised. This is an entirely optional (but highly recommended!) security measure that offers users invaluable extra protection.

To use the authenticator simply run the patcher to login to the game as you normally would. When prompted, provide the code generated by the application on your Android device in addition to your username and password.

Read more on the Rift forums or at the Droid Marketplace.

    Nice and fast work Trion. I still see people on this website make something negative from it though.

    Hopefully they release a Blackberry version soon!

    I hafta wonder, with all the viruses and everything populating the Droid marketplace why ANYONE would download ANYTHING from it.  I may not like the facist nature of Apple but atleast I don't have to worry that programs on there contain malicious spyware.

    My guess is that they had both versions (iphone and android) ready. They submitted the iphone for approval, thus the delay, while they released the android and thus the announcement.

    Can't wait for my iPhone authenticator! I love that they are working hard and fast to keep peoples account secure. Way to go Trion!

    Everyday Trion is showing every other MMO companies out there how work is done... Way to go Trion. At leats you work fast and dont rehash content in content patches while doing new items and mounts to sell in the real money market...

    authenticators work great!

    Trouble for me is, I cancelled my WoW sub this month, but if I uninstall the auth app, then I have to disable auth on the website, which makes it vulnerable, again.  I suppose I could try to wipe my CC info...

    Apple has had big issues in the past with programs. The biggest one everyone is having problems with is Pandora. They sell your information widley known.

    Past the apps that the Android Market has removed in its latest programs that were thought to have been malicious in nature the Android Market is way better than the App Store anyday.

    Fact is both have had issues with certian apps being bad, the only reason u hear about android is because they are open source and open to the news about what they are doing.

    @Rob

    In the case of WoW, I've kept my authenticator on my account (if I ever choose to head back that way, I'd like my toons to be as I left them).  I just wiped out as much of my personal info as possible.  But authenticators are notoriously difficult to get by so your info SHOULD be completely safe on Battle.net

    @Pepc

    You are completely correct that some apps in the App Store do sell your personal information.  Hence why you need to be very careful.  The difference is that the Open Source nature of Android (Google OS) is that many MANY people can easily plant viruses and coding in there that could harm your phone.  That isn't simply a data farmer but something that could potentially steal bank account info, friends phone numbers, passwords, and the like.

    Make sure to write down your authenticator code. If you do this you can wipe your authenticator much easier. Past that what i do is simply have a physical authenticator and move from my mobile one to my physical when i quit. So i ca remove the mobile one without fear and my wow account stays happy.

    You don't have to worry about malicious programs on the App Store?  Why?  If you think a tester poking around with something for--at most--an hour is going to root out every piece of malware, you're sadly mistaken.

    Also, your post amounts to saying that Trion would intentionally create a piece of malware with the hope that none of their users would ever figure out the program is doing more than just providing a login code.

    Anyway, I wish more companies would provide these for their games.  I'm surprised we haven't seen one for EVE...

    Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

    Don't put words into my mouth.

    I just don't mix things that can access my bank account and access my games.  I don't use my phone for game-related stuff and I have a separate computer for all my home finances and whatnot.  My gaming laptop is there for the media and gaming needs.

    My point was not that Trion or other developers do it but the fact that it was so widespread on the Android platform.  Trion, I don't believe, would be even remotely that malicious but after being burned it's easy to see how people become skittish not to be burned again.

    Why are there 4 articles all pertaining to rift in the news section?

    Do they really need that much exposure?
