It appears that we are getting a Tribes game that at first glance appears to be a "sucessor" to Tribes 2. I love the Tribes franchise. I am excited about the announcement of a new Tribes game. I am concerned, however, that the success and/or failure of Tribes: Ascend will affect the production of Tribes: Universe.
Ever since I have player Starseige: Tribes for the first time, I have always wanted a Tribes MMOFPS with a persistant universe. The day that Tribes: Universe was announced, was like a dream come true.
I will see you guys in Tribes: Ascend (at the business end of my Stormhammer). But I really want to see you in Tribes: Universe.

Why would a match based online shooter usurp an MMOFPS?
Because there's a good chance we'll all prefer it.
All people would prefer a match game over a persistant game? That sounds a tad ridiculous. I may not even pick up Ascend, but I will definity give Universe a shot.
They've tried to make MMO versions of Unreal Tournament, Huxley for example. It failed. Global Agenda was a shot at a persistent version of Tribes. It also didn't do so well.
The sheer fact that a company is willing to push out a version of the game that is all action so close to a version that has more depth tells me that they would drop the latter if the action title does really well.
It's ALMOST like releasing a version of WoW that consists of nothing but instances/raids/battlegrounds and then later in the year attempt to release persistant version of the same thing aka the WoW we all know today.
And it is not so much that they want to release both of them that has me worried. But for both of them to have a release date so close together that smells fishy.
From what I can tell, Ascend is a testbed. That's all we can say about it. They want to see how well Tribes will still be recieved and if people really want an MMO or if the large fan playerbase just wants the same old thing (which we do). This also gives them a chance to make some big mistakes without leaving a bad taste in peoples' mouthes about the MMO.
GA has had a consistent population for many months, possibly over a year (I haven't bothered consistently keeping track). They are also pushing out updates on top of creating a whole new game (Tribes). GA did great. Still doing just fine every time I log in.
I would hope Tribes has more of a world to it than GA, especially considering it's supposed to support actual wars (100v100) instead of matches. For that matter, I wish GA had more of a world to it.
However, all we've really seen is one animated guy. Hard to judge an entire game based on that.
* edit * Actually went back and read the article on Tribes: Ascend. I bet the game does just fine. The large scale combat that they were going to put into GA is going to end up in Tribes: Ascend. Will it be any good? It'll probably be just fine. I'd still rather have Tribes: Universe, but I'll probably buy Tribes: Ascend anyway.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I played the original Tribes on the UR3 mods and I was a frigen God, no one could kill me. I have played many FPS over the years and none compare to that of the original Tribes. When I first heard they were doing Tribes Ascend I was excited however after reading a bit about the game I would say that I am not, and I'll explain why.
The first is there is no UR3 mods which blows. Part of the appeal to the UR3 mods back in the day was that it was all aerial combat. The combat was way faster it was like regular Tribes but on crack which made things much more fun in my opinion.
That being said the way it's designed there is no way players can design there own servers with mods and own rules (no UR3 mods). This also means players will not be able to create there own maps which to me was another big plus to the original Tribes because it gave players more control over new content which Tribes Ascend will not have.
Also I hate the whole unlocking stuff bit. We have seen more and more FPS turn to this method and it's stupid. I don't want unlocks I want to jump in to a game and have access to the same thing every one else does. I don't want to work for anything I just want to enjoy the game and playing. The whole unlock thing has become a pattern in FPS and I would like to see at least one FPS that refused to follow all the other idiot developers out there. Players didn't stay in Tribes because of unlocks or any of that crap. They said cause it was just a fun laid back game that you could hang out with your friends and play.
So I doubt very seriously I will be playing Tribes Ascend not any time soon any way. Once they allow players to create maps and design there own mods then I might pick the game up, not before.
Well I hat a LOT of fun on Tribes Vengeance and this game looks like Vengeance with better graphics, seriously, I played Tribes 2 as well and I get a more Vengeance feel out of this one, especially when I saw the engine and that decaptication disc gun hit on the video. I like the concept and am looking for something for my new gaming rig so I got it on the short list. God I miss the matches where you would have to take down the giant gunship, its almost gonna have to be a total war RVR kind of set up to keep people killing each other long enough to stay interesting though.
