I'm gonna go with AndyPreston on this. It really doesn't matter what the theme of the art design is, if a person doesn't like it, they don't like it. He's got every right to voice his opinion on it. When you're talking about visual media, how it looks is just as important as how it plays. If someone were to make the most amazing RPG system for a computer game the gaming world has ever seen, with the caveat that all of the characters are actually walking and talking turds, I wouldn't play it.
Of course, if you want to play the freedom of speech angle here, I suppose you have every right to feel the way you do about AndyPreston based on his opinion, just like I have every right to feel like you're a complete douche for your ridiculous responses to him.
I never said he couldn't state his opinion on it, I was pointing out how his opinion was skewed and wrong. Frankly I don't care if you side with him, good for you -- maybe you two can get together for late night coffee some time.
What if instead you had 2 playable races....a douche, and a turd?! I would totally play that, but I have no idea how I would decide between a douche and a turd.
On a serious note the dislike of an art style doesn't make anyone racist. I for instance hate country music, and I am white. I also hate rap. People are allowed to express their like, or dislike of artistic expression if they want to. Saying that they don't want to play a game because it is from asia isn't an attack on asian people, or culture. It is simply saying that they prefer their own culture, and there is nothing wrong with having pride in your culture. In this world I have preferences, and I am not going to pretend they don't exist to make others happy. I choose to play my games based on those preferences.
Then go by your preferences and stop trying to tailor the game to meet them, it wasn't made to fit everybody and certainly not those that have a disdain for "asian" MMOs in general.

How is his opinion skewed and wrong? He states he doesn't like the Asian artstyle in mmos and then goes on to list parts of said artstyle which he doesn't like. He isn't asking for all mmos to be made in a western style and he isn't saying Asians are any worse or better then any westerners, he is simply stating that such an artsyle is not for him.
Are you going to tell me next that if someone doesn't happen to like the colour green, but you do, that his disliking of the colour green is both a skewed and wrong opinion?
Personally certain aspects of the current standard Asian style we see in mmos puts me off as well, whilst it's not for me I can fully appreciate that it is what countless amounts of other people enjoy. But I guess that means little, simply the fact that I don't personally like a specific 'style' or aspects of it means I am an uninformed, xenophobic monster.

Saying that every asian developed MMO is the same, having little girls, picachu characters, pandas, and large men in trench coats wielding an oversized sword is a skewed and misinformed opinion.
To answer your question: no, and you draw a terrible example.
You prefer what you prefer. It doesn't make you an uninformed xenophobe until you start hate mongering in threads relating to foreign developed MMOs to vehemently argue obvious differences of preferences with weak stabs to illustrate your point of view.
What's wrong with aisan themed? If you mean by art work, then I'll have to say that asian style of MMO art or games period is a lot more visually appealing than American and UK games where the toons look unproportioned and having that stupid look on most of their faces. Just look at the male Alliance toon in WoW for example. In any case TERA looks amazing. Asians make better looking female toons. And that is kinda a big thing for me if I have to stare at a character for hours on end. Even though Aion was kind of a flop, I think it had one of the best looking character creations ever. And it looks as if TERA is following that same suit.

Actually he seemed to me to be picking out specific aspects that he doesn't like. Saying that you don't like specific aspects is far, far away from being hate mongering.
I doubt anyone would argue that there is not both an amazing amount of depth to eastern culture as well as now a massive amount of intermixing between the modern eastern and western youth culture scenes. But there are specific, key stylistic types that are prevalent in some asian styled mmos. Tera is a game that has such an art style, so he is more then justified in pointing that out. Or are you telling me that there are no oversized swords in Tera? Are there no panda/pikachu themed characters in the game? Are there no characters/classes that look like mini adult (read potentially sexualized) children?
Someone can dislike all that and point to it being of an asian stylistic bent, without stating that that is essentially the be all and end all of eastern culture. They can also state they don't like those aspects without saying 'thats wrong and immoral' or stupid, they simply don't like that art style.
I live in England, I'd like to think that there is quite a bit of depth to the culture of the place and Europe in general. But i'm sure many Asian players could point to the fact that all our fantasy mmos are all about knights and dragons with wizards with pointy hats and fireballs. You know what they would be right, and they would be more than entitled to say 'Oh God I hate that western art style crap'. It doesn't mean they are panning our culture, they are simply pointing out that in terms of games/mmos we tend to see a similar set of features. Much the same as we see in many of their games/mmos which we see details of/release over here.

You are taking this way too personal. You're also creating one hell of a strawman here based on one person's well-stated opinion. I guess by your definition, WoW is an asian themed MMO.
I guess by my definition WoW is an mmo that has drawn on those stylistic leanings which it finds popular enough at the time, your point being? Stating that there is a merging of east and west in certain games does not disprove the fact that each demographic has specific art components within the genre.
Or has your whole argument against people saying that they see certain aspects repeated in the eastern games they are aware of which they don't personally enjoy, shifted from 'you're a xenophobe'. To, 'well if there is a merging of styles in some western mmos then you must be wrong'? Because if so that's a pretty poor argument.
I'm not entirely sure why you are so against someone stating that over-sized swords and the like are more frequent in asian than western mmos and that they don't happen to like that.

There is one thing that could be changed in TERA that would make me more excited about it. Animations for the female characters. As of now, they run like pubescent girls on a playground, and their idle standing pose looks like mannequins at Saks Fifth Avenue. While one can throw the "It's fantasy! Duh!" argument around to a certain extent, some things need to make a little sense. Adventurers, regardless of gender, should be at the very least atheletic in poise and movement. I never thought I'd ever use such a dreadful show like Xena as an example, but at least the character had a demeanor about her that let you know she was serious. Most of the videos I've seen featured a female PC, and the only thing I ever took away from them was "My god, she runs like a dandy!"

I prefer Asian MMOs (I am a white westerner). However, few artistic “features” of these great games puzzle me a lot. Similar to AndyPreston I do not like to confront in a virtual deadly battle “little girls” and cute animals (Popori race). Over-sexualization of child-like body (Elin race) is not for my taste either (I am fine with “adult” races, they are awesome!). IMHO these two races (Popori and Elin) are out of place in the game, compare them with “seriously” looking other ones.
Dear Eastern gamers could you explain me what is so funny in killing child-looking avatars? It’s a game, it should be entertaining, one should enjoy her/his free time, right?
I must admit that I have also serious problems with artistic concept of the western Asura race (GW2).

Oh it's not funny to kill child looking avatars. What is funny is killing the hulking manly man looking avatars with a child-like one. Yep. it's mostly for folks who like to dent the pride of people that feel like they have to play manly men characters.

So the perception of "killing" an in-game avatar somehow translates to RL only when said avatar is perceived to be a minor? That somehow, it is OK to beat an adult female avatar into a blood pulp because they're of ripe beating age once they pass that perceived age threshold, right?
Lol, another person who can't distinguish between fantasy and RL, it's no wonder they have to implement safeguards.
“That somehow, it is OK to beat an adult female avatar into a blood pulp because they're of ripe beating age once they pass that perceived age threshold, right?”
Yes, that’s “OK”: I consider her as competitive opponent. But a baby-girl not.
"What is funny is killing the hulking manly man looking avatars with a child-like one. Yep. it's mostly for folks who like to dent the pride of people that feel like they have to play manly men characters."
To use a child avatar to insult other players. Is that serious?
“Lol, another person who can't distinguish between fantasy and RL, it's no wonder they have to implement safeguards.”
You are simplifying my words: in my free time I do not want to observe cartoon scenes of beating a child, period. This has nothing to do with the forum cliché explanation that some players are not able to “distinguish between fantasy and RL”. It is about of different esthetical perception of artistic content in video games. I do not understand why Eastern game designers/players/officials can massively and communally (MM) enjoy such “fantasies”.
BTW, an MMO player is a RL human and her/his playing style, preferences, skills, etc. are tightly related to her/his RL personality: game fantasy has a link to RL.
Seriously guys... when you look at a tree do you see the complete tree with all its branches and leaves? or do you just look at 1 leaf that looks dead to you and conclude that the tree is ugly because of that 1 leef... Do you get what i mean? ... Your talking and fighting because of a couple of character's skin... when in fact this game is the only mmorpg with "open world" that is in the "action" "non-targeting" "real physic collision" category. As a bonus it have very epic bosses to it. To me you guys been talking about that fallen leaf for way to long... look up... the tree is still there and its a beautiful and imposing one.

If an otherwise beautiful woman has a large hairy ugly wart in the middle of her face that she refuses to remove I will not date her. There are many things about this game that I like, and when one of the U.S. designers steals the ideas and puts an art style that I like with them than I will be happy to play.

This leaves me to wonder what the 'big wart' in TERA is. Is it just the art style in general? What specific things about the art don't you like? I'm not trying to be provocative - I'm genuinely curious.

Wow, you are really superficial. I rather date someone smart and funny with a wart than someone stupid that looks perfect.
I will try TERA, if it is fun I play it, if not I find something else. It is just that simple. Sure, I will most likely be annoyed by some of the stuff, like that lolita race but if I have fun I can look past that. If I don't have fun the game can look better than any FPS game, I still wont play it.
Since I so far havn't tried the game I have no real opinion about it.
"A large hairy, ugly wart in the middle of her face"...really? that much? Anyway.... it would be more then just a leaf in a tree to me...i would even say that its like the biggest branch... And i would'nt be there, wasting time posting about her if she is that terrible to me. Anyway we are in a free world.. people have the right to hate and post negativity on forums. Its their own choices to live in the negativity...Personally i prefer to live in a positive way and i try to avoid to do and discuss about things that are pointless and which i don't enjoy. To tell an opinion is right, but to keep insisting about something you do not even like, just by pride, to me it sounds like you could use your time for something better.
In simple words : Why post on games that are so repulsive to you? Does it benefit to anybody?
To answer the question "what is the wart" you are correct. It is the general art style. I've never been into JRPG's like final fantasy or anything like that due to the art style, and a story I don't find interesting. I don't relate to it. I grew up with my favorite movie being The Princess bride, and I loved the cartoon Heman.
As for why I choose to post on games I don't plan on playing..it isn't as if I go into the forums searching out these games. It just happens to be the topic of the moment on the main page, and as I'm reading through it I find that I disagree, and feel like voicing my opinion. It may not be helpful to anybody else, but I'm not an altruistic person so I don't really care if it benifits others. I do what I do for myself in this life.

The answer to the second question : No
To answer the question "what is the wart" you are correct.
