I've been living in Middle Earth for over 3 years now, and I can see myself staying until they turn off the servers. Just love everything about the game, the environments, music, exploring, combat.... I enjoy how Turbine is keeping the game fresh by adding new mechanics and providing something for everyone. Want to play music, decorate your house, craft, raid, PvMP, fish, etc?... it's all there.
It had the best PvE mechanics of EverQuest (pretty much all of them)
The first huge crafting system in an MMORPG
and the first massive scale PvP system. Siege towers, destructable keeps, towers, boiling oil, trebuchets, hundreds of people battling over keeps and relics and dungeons.
The balance of power was fantastic due to the fact you were in 3 realms.
The attention to lore and history to craft the realms based on real world settings was amazing.
And you really felt you were a part of your realm, and you hated the other realms, despite none of them being bad guys.
The balance between PvE and PvP was almost perfect. There was raiding, which was done for fun as much as profit because you didn't have to grind it over and over. You could get comparable gear from crafters, or you could do the encounter and get an equal shot at getting a good item. Because of this, there was no need for BoP or instancing.
There were close to 30 classes, and each class could be specialized at least 5 different ways, all different from one another.
And lastly, at level 50 you could further customize your character with realm abilities bought with realm points, earned by taking keeps and killing other players. Giving you an incentive to win, and a reason not to die to give your enemies realm points as well as field advantage.
FFXI ... it was my first and I have the most fondest memories. The main thing that made it great was the community. It was MMO (you had to group) it was RPG (a lot of people would roleplay and act like their race... especially the tarutaru.)
Guild Wars is second because the community was good at the start.. the missions and explorable areas and skills were all really fun.
Hard question to answer. My first experience was EQ back in 99, so nothing will ever top that novelty. My first time seeing a Druid in wolf form, a member of the Seekers of Norrath. They were the best at one time. I was mesmerized.
But then there was SWG and all the potential it had in the beginning. I was a Master Creature Handler, with a Rancor as my only friend in the Galaxy, hated by Imperials, distrusted by Rebels, cast out by my own kin. Then space came, and being able to fly a Z-95 Headhunter. What great times.
So, between those two, I couldn't really pick just one since they both declined so badly.
Yeah I think for me I'm a bit stuck I'm stuck on the EQ series regardless.... I just think since EQ was my first MMORPG erotic encounter I just love it for that and why i can't seem to think to myself if I'm indescivie about subing to EQ2 or not... I dont know but yeah its great.
I'm also in Guild Wars now but with the PvP Access Kit only because I wasn't too fond of the PvE ascept of it
Man that is a hard one, I have played so many games that pull you in, but I would have to say City of Heroes/Villains. For one it took my MMO virginity but like most people who get hooked on an MMO I had alot of memories in that game. I made friends that I never met but knew more about than my real life friends, I was on the super group site during school chatting with people and planning raids and task force's for the weekend. *sigh* I miss those days.
endless content, great design, challenging, best endgame ever created, marvelous community and under Verant a game from gamers for gamers. More like art than a normal MMORPG.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
Over all best game from start to end-game-content? Probably EQ1 but nothing after the PoP expansion gameplay. And of the PoP expansion, excluding the teleport books. Also best with the working ships, but excluding the new newbie park ride zone (demo/newbie start). It was the golden age of EQ, having the most subs of it’s run to boot. Then the changes came… sigh
Oh, and the carto maps were bad too made the game seem much smaller. "what? he didn't rail on the instances??" Most of what the sigh was for. But like I said, PoP, pre-PoP was golden by far.
Wasn't my first mmo, but content wise it was probably the best. Otherwise UO. UO for me was push to max skills in whatever way I could get there fastest, which didn’t always have to do with game content directly. Actually a lot of it was training with others, often beating each other over the head with newbie weapons and cross healing. But end-game-content was what it was all about where the game was played.
Anarchy Online, before the Shadowlands expansion. I loved the sci-fi theme, the unique class design, the depth and the difficulty. It was also my first MMO. I think that game still has one of the best designs and wish it was revamped. The whole implant system was very interesting & immersive, to the point where players would spend hours just making and trying to fit implants. The tradeskill system was quite solid, although tied to the classes. While there was an endgame, the game focuses moreso on leveling than rushing to max level. The World PvP system of towers actually motivated you to make alts for specific level caps.
The game did have its problems, no doubt, but for the time I think it was truly amazing.
Shadowbane before it went free to play. A multitude of race and class builds, meaningful and challenging open pvp without the silly mechanic of FULL loot drop**. The ability to steal from other players. The level grind was something you did to GET TO the real fun. And my most favorite thing of all, if anyone annoyed you badly enough, you and some mates went and burned his bloody town down around his ears. Good times good times.
** You got to keep your armor weapons and jewelry. Some might say that DF or UO style loot drop are the better idea but honestly if losing ALL your gear isn't much of a penalty then there is little point in bothering with it, all it really does is add PVP down time.
"Gypsies, tramps, and thieves, we were called by the Admin of the site . . . "
I'm gonna go with Ragnarok Online. It was my first MMO; like many, the first game kind of defined my taste.
I guess my favorite thing about it was the customization. There were so many ways to twek characters and equipment. I loved getting some crazy idea of a build, then trying ti out.
Even though there wasn't an AH, It was fun to shop around the market, buying all sorts of odds and ends; it gave it a better sense of community, seeing all the players set up in town, vending.
RO didn't hold your hand. Some games just let you waltz through with the ability to kill anything in your path with whatever gear it provided you with. You had to think about optimizing your equipment and your strategy with each monster (not so much in the beginning, but later on).
Unfortunately, like many old MMOs, it's just a shadow of its former self. It's bot-infested, and the economy is inflated to the point of no return, however it still has some of my favorite features intact.

Yea Ragnarok online is amazing MMO. Probably best one for me too.
Played: Lineage 2,Guild Wars 1 and 2, Age of Conan, Ragnarok Online, LOTRO, World of Warcraft, League of Legends, EvE online Tried: KAL Online, Face of Mankind, ROSE online Playing: CS:GO
I could never pick just one...I've played so many great games over the past 23 years! If I HAD to narrow it down though, it would be GS3 (sadly, I didn't appreciate the changes that came with iv), Dark Age of Camelot, and (yes)(sigh)World of Warcraft. It's now my second longest played game, and I still find reasons to log in and still have fun.
Everquest by far. Nothing comes close to Everquest.
The community was the best ever. Helpful, fun, nice. (most of them).
Content. Talk about having a choice of places to hunt at any level. God I miss that the most. Today, you have a single path to level based on which faction you pick but not in Everquest.
Explorering. God another big thing missing from today's MMOs Explorering, Today we have full maps with every thing labeled and nothing left to explore.
Death. This is the one that alot of people disagree with me on and that is fine but man. I was scared to Die in Everquest because it cost so much. I had many close calls and they were the best part. It never stopped you from trying stuff that could get you killed but it make it so much better when you won events and raid after dieing to them.
Risk vs Reward no longer exist in the MMORPG genre. There are no risks only rewards in todays games. Such a shame. Risk is what made the rewards special.
EverQuest. It wasn't my first game, but it was easily the one I played the longest, and I could go back to playing it tomorrow and be happy doing it if my husband didn't have strong feelings about that. (It's the one game he feels he can't play responsibly-- he'd jump right back into full-time raiding and doesn't want the temptation. He was was a serious, hardcore player of UO at one point, but he was able to walk away when EQ came along. No game since EQ has had that kind of hold on him. )
Why do I love EQ? I like all the different races and the variety of zones in the world. Even with all the expansions, Norrath feels like a place that I am familiar and comfortable with. I like that I can do quests if I want to, but it's not the main way to progress. Unlike many people, I actually like the way the game has evolved over time-- I do love my mercs and my guild lobby-- but it is a fun game with or without those things.
I know the graphics are a huge turn-off for a lot of people, but I don't even mind that. The UI does make me stumble a little when I go back from time-to-time because I forget things like how to open the potion belt and I have to completely reconfigure the chat windows, but it is easy enough to for me to get back in the saddle within a couple of hours. Once I am back in the groove, I find it is just as fun as it ever was.
Well Wow was the first mmo i ever played , and i stil play it from time to time. I hate to admit because of the WoW haters out there ready to flame at any given second , but WoW is prolly my favorite.
Apart from the great memories I have from playing muds: 3030MUX, Materia Magicka then Asheron's Call 1 followed by Vanguard, the best right now is Fallen Earth.

All of this could and should have been done in one thread man.
Same answer as before.
Dark Age of Camelot.

Doesn't Exist -
I was talking to my buddy last night about how they need to make and Online X-Com UFO Defense game. That would pretty much top my list.
