Not what I expected

I've played a lot of MMOs and just because something is new is no longer a reason to play.  I'm looking for MMOs that are fun from the begining to the end game.  I'm looking for innovation and a new look at the genre because honestly, I'm getting burned out on the standard formulas.  Which brings me to Rift.  I got bored in 5 minutes.  I won't go into the specifics of what I don't like or do like, that's not really the point.  The point is I got bored that fast in a new MMO.  There was no sense of discovery or newness at all, everything felt like I'd done it already.

So what exactly is the appeal for Rift.  I'm not looking to rag on the game I can see a lot people that really love the game and I say enjoy, but I just couldn't make myself play past those first 5 minutes.  It felt so mind numbingly boring to me.

Please don't tell me I need to play more than 5 minutes to truly grasp the game, if a game can't catch my attention in the first five minutes then why should I plod along the boring part to get to something good, the whole game should be fun.

So again, why is RIFT worth my money?  Please I really want to like this game but if the most exciting and engaging part of the game is the box cover, I can't justify the cost.

So, thepatriot, what are you playing now or looking forward to playing that might break that standard formula and offer innovation in game-play and content for sustained subscribership?

  • MrMundoMrMundo Member Posts: 4

You say dont say play more, but that the only way youre going to find out why this game is fun. YOu must be to used to WoW, but what you need to rememebr is wow is very boring at first too. All MMOs atre boring at first actually. Your whole post is kinda nonsense anyway asking for an argument for the game,  but denying the one that actually makes sense. Go play bejewled you dont need to spend more than 5 minutes on there. Maybe invest in same adderall I think you have ADD.

So, you want us to tell you why a game that you've already decided you don't like is worth your money? And you tell us that you're not looking to rag on the game after you spent a paragraph doing just that?

    Not sure if serious...

naw -- he got a free ALLY code to try, he didnt pay a penny for it.  He just wasted an ALLY code that could of went to someone who was willing to give the game a fair shake.

Good thing you found out after 5 minutes....I went all the way to level 30 before I decided to throw in the towel.  The game is VERY standard fair...so much so that it can feel stale to an avid MMO player.

I decided to go back to Age of Conan.

Well...Rift is not a bad game. It runs smoothly and looks good and has its moments, for sure. I had the most fun between the levels of 12-20 when there was a lot of Rift activity in Silverwood and you group up with people in Argent for the invasions, etc. But you specifically mentioned being burned out on the MMO formula, which I am as well. Therefore I'd recommend you don't play Rift because it won't hold that many surprises for you. That's my honest opinion.

So you expect us, forums readers, to value your, the original poster's, opinion on a game you spent 5 minutes playing when your post imposing your poor opinion on those 5 minutes of playing took longer than 5 minutes to type? gtfo  Move along....there's nothing to see here fellow forum readers.

This question should have ended the thread.

There is pretty much no innovation in Rift other than the class system I guess. So if you are burned out on existing MMOs this isn't a good one to play for you.

Even worse, it needs to do all those things in the first 5 minutes.

5 minutes is like running to the first quest giver, what a lame post.

What aload of C..., 5min is bull S..., nomatter how hard you try to explain your bored in 5min its just not believeble to judge a game.

man that download was sooooo boring i decided to just quit the game after the first 50 megs.

  • ZebladeZeblade Member UncommonPosts: 931

The game is a blast 1-20.  What you find is after that going to different zones there is not tons of people.  Its just rinse and repeat. Take the event now happening.  Just rifts and some other kind of coin.

It was worth the 6month for 10$. But you cant get that. It is SO not worth $15 a month. Yes I am sorry but you have to get past 20 to see how boring it really gets. How the armor is just (most not all) awful. Guys "clerics, rogues" looks like they are waring dresses.

But hey you get 30 free days.. so dont take anyones word for it. Just buy it and see.

Thank you to those who actually read what I posted and gave helpful replies.  You pretty much confirmed what I could tell in those 5 minutes, that there is nothing really new here.

BTW:  The games I am looking forward to the Fallout mmo, SWTOR and The Secret World.  I was looking forward to The Agency.

I think the real issue is that I'm burned out on Fantasy games in general.  Between MMOS, CRPGs and tabletop games I've been playing fantasy genre games for 30 years now.  It's a bit played out for me.

Fantasy games can be different :  http://www.justin.tv/jvalen85/b/282739595  It will be worth the wait when the game goes live later this year.

At least you found out after 5 minutes. Unfortunately I took it to 50 and found it even less exciting.

  • LeetheLeethe Member UncommonPosts: 893

OP, I don't understand. Why would you spend less time playing a game than it took to download? You've already decided you don't like it. Why do you want to be convinced? You have said that the game is standard fair, nothing special and feels boring.

It felt so mind numbingly boring to me.

That does not sound like a person that wants a conversation.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

Come on seriously? You're burned out on fantasy games? Why even post this? That's like getting on a automobile forum and posting how you drove the new camero for 5 minutes, in a parking lot, in first gear, and said that you found it boring and not worth your time or money.  Then five minutes later telling everyone, "I'm really just burned out on sports cars, I've driven them for 30 years and want to drive an 18 wheeler."  Don't waste people's time with worthless ramblings.

I'm not a fan of RIFT, it's not a game I think deserves it's praise for taking what other people have spent years perfecting and because it uses the current technology it looks better, and for some reason it's the second coming. But, seriously, don't write a topic and leave out the most important reason why you don't like a game.  Of course it isn't gonna hold your interest, DUH it's something you're tired of.

I know you said not to say it, but really, you need to play a game for more then 5mins to grasp it.. ESPECIALLY a MMORPG.. And if you havn't done research on it or participated in the open beta to know that it is a fantasy MMO with a lot of traditional mechanics then i don't feel bad about you wasting you're money.. lol

Well I made it to level 40 and definitely hit a wall. I think I realized that once I hit 50, all I will be doing is gear grinding dungeons and doing pvp for gear as well.

I am in a excellent guild, however I can't seem to get the interest to load up the game anymore. I do have some RL issues going on right now, however games usually help me cope and relax, but I don't think it will be RIFT.

I think coming off of WoW into a game that is like WoW just did me in and must find something new and different from these types of mmorpg's.

RIFT is a great game, however its too much of the same ole, same ole feeling for me.

I did make a mistake about the MMO and DCU. However, I did read this review. I dont see one negative comment in the review. Where is there a markdown of any sort to take it to 85? Id like to know why the game got a 85 instead of say 91? Even in your Cataclysm review you said a few things negative yet it still received a Editors Choice score. This review says only great/good things about the game and nothing negative and yet it only gets a 85. Evan, please tell us why its a 85 and not a 90-94. In any case tell us why it didnt get a Editors Choice?
