I hope this is really true because every little bit helps. I can't even imagine what the people of Japan are going through right now. I watched a news epiosde that showed an entier town leveled. Gone. Nothing left. It's beyond belief. The high death toll is mind blowing.
i don't think i've seen them advertising this.. so.. chances are they just did it without publicising it.. if he hadnt posted it here we probably wouldnt have known about it.. i think the fact they did that.. without expecting any kind of recognition.. says far more about them tbh..
Trion performed a mitzvah, the act of doing something kind without mentioning it publically. The fact that someone who was the recipient of said kindness said something does not diminish the mitzvah. I seriously doubt they did it to get publicity because people are usually quick to complain, but slow to praise. It would be an ineffective marketing trick.
It's nice to see. More people (not just companies) should do things just for the sake of being human, not for publicity or acknowledgment. (Wesley Autrey comes to mind)
Yes, I am a heartless asshole, but I think this needs to be said:
There is financial incentive for them to offer their condolences. It is cheap to mass mail people by location if it guarantees that they will retain them as customers in the future and create loyalty.
Trion, unlike Blizzard, realizes that it will have fierce competition coming up and it will fall into a sort of niche. Their niche will not be catering to arcane/innovative gameplay (obviously), but to treat their customers like gold and create a great community. Big companies, like Blizzard, really don't have the capacity, or even the requirement to cater to their customers like Trion does.
It's really the same deal when a business learns of one their best customers losing a loved one and sends them a sympathy card when in reality they could give a fuck less and merely want to retain their revenue from that person/family.
Sure, it's superficially a nice gesture, but I am confident that if only a couple of their players were from Japan they'd not care if it were to be swallowed by the ocean.
That is a nice gesture. The same thing happened to me. I don't live in Japan but, apparantly, since they took awhile to response to a question of mine they gave me an extra month + in-game weapon.
Square Enix did something equally (more?) notable.
At the (direct, perhaps?) request of the government, they shut their servers down so their staff could find their family and moreso so they weren't consuming massive amounts of power.
They donated something like $1.2 million to the relief effort.
Probably because they brought their servers down for like 10 days -- they gave everyone a free month.
Blizzard...devs have said Blizzzard has a donation match system.. Whatever any Activision-Blizzard employee donates, they will match. (I would assume this has a per-employee or total limit) still it is quite notable. Blizzard didn't make a fanfare of this either until a forum poster directly asked them why they weren't doing anything. Given that policy, there's no telling what else they did or if the donation-matching was all of it.
Letters in the mail are sweet but money and resources gets things done. Props to Trion, Blizzard, and Square Enix.
Spec'ing properly is a gateway drug. 12 Million People have been meter spammed in heroics.
lol what a bloody joke, pure business strategy. If they actually were "good" people wouldn't you think they would raise money or something of actual worth rather than promote their game to the people who didn't get their computers hosed? Yeah, good people indeed.
If Trion actually did something of the sort and I missed it, fair enough.
It´s very nice to see Trion is giving out for free what they have to Japan....
It might no be the most needed at the moment...but helping them get entretained, have some fun and get away from that horrible dissaster sure will help them recover.
All my prays to Japan and much respect for Trion. Awesome
Rift sent me a message expressing their sympathy and hoping my family and I were safe and doing ok what with the earthquake, tsunami and other troubles here.
They gave me a month free play time, too.
I was surprised at this act of decency and kindness.
Just wanted to let people know this.
Regards
Melmoth
Wow thats pretty damn awesome.
Im pretty bored of these style games but everything Trion does with their game makes me wish i wanted to play it. lol
It is very nice, theres nothing they can do about the people that did lose family members or homes or anything and it is ya know, a little weird getting free game time but just the fact that theyre doing it to show they care is still pretty damn impressive.
Trion is making the gaming world feel much safer and nicer in my opinion. Theres far too much hostility and greed and all around suck in the MMO world, Trion is blowing my mind and im not even that interested in Rift.

Best thing any entertaiment company did ever...

Only in a quiet mind is adequate perception of the world."

It's a really nice thing to do, they took the time to do what they did.
But I have to agree with the guy above. Sympathie isn't completely free, it never is.
That said, we can only encourage this behavior as long as possible :-)
