Mortal Online to release Dawn "Expansion" this month

Mortal Online News April 2nd, 2011

News too good to be true on April 1st, so we released it on April 2nd instead.

We are extremely happy to inform you that the remaining stability issues in the core engine that we have been struggling with since release are now solved. This week the server set a new up-time record of 50 plus hours before it was manually restarted for in-game maintenance – twice the uptime we expected. With these great improvements on stability, together with the fixes in our core system, we are finally able to start focusing on more content.

We have been silent for some time now while working very hard on our first expansion titled Dawn, and we now feel ready to reveal its contents. The expansion will be released in April, and it will not cost anything, all you need is an active subscription.

Please see the new Expansions section under “Game info” on the website for updates and details of features.

Player Stats and Facebook

We are going to give the option to link your account to Facebook, where you will be able to display status updates from the game as well as receive news about events and happenings. Linking your Mortal account to Facebook will also give you a subscription discount!

We have also been preparing a new section on the Mortal site where you will be able to see real-time status updates of wars, territories, guilds and characters in the game. The first iteration of this section will go online any day now so more information will follow shortly. Displaying information about your character will of course be optional.

Community and Events

A big welcome goes out to our new NEW Community Manager Black Opal! The team at SV would also like to extend its deepest thanks to former Community Manager Maerlyn for all his great work. We wish you all the best, and hope to see you back with us in the future. The machinima contest is being brought back for 2011, expect more updates on it in the coming days on the forums.

Also don't miss the interview with Henrik,

That is some funny stuff!

How many times have you heard the following statements:

"Since we feel that the core is getting stable in the game, and the technology is getting stable we can for the first time start to focus on game features and content."

"It is not easy for either part to deliver a new technology in time, and us adapt to the restrictions and "rebuilds" from Epic Games China."

"We managed to create a very dynamic crafting system that we will expand shortly; it won’t take long until we have converted our content into our new item system that means we can, without much effort add a ton of new armor parts, weapons and clothing to the game, using the dynamic system."

"We did focus a lot more on a robust crafting system that will work in the future and that supports a lot of new weapon groups and types. With that in place, we will rebalance our weapons."

"The mix is totally endless, you will probably never see two horses that are alike, we are talking about a million of combinations between appearance attributes age etc."

"This system will be applied in all our animals later on; it’s the next step after releasing the new gene system."

"We are going to work more on our AI/PVE, convert our GUI into flash, that will make our GUI look better and run more fluently compared to what we use today. We are also going to focus on our magic schools. We will continue adding social, trading tools as well."

I have to say... I laughed out loud. I really did, god help me. Its almost like someone took a database of everything the man said, since Combat Beta onwards, clicked Randomize and posted it up after doing a few cosmetic changes. Its always millions of combinations, starting to focus for the first time, adding without much effort, very dynamic system to be expanded shortly, the next step, focusing on magic schools...

Awesome, its like Oprah. Except Dr. Phil got fired recently. :D

If the free trial was such a success I would think there would be no need for a subscription discount.

Looks like the game might finally be out of the "beta" state, with this "expansion". Although calling it for expansion is way to ambicious, it is more of a content patch.. Sigh, I guess whatever helps them to keep the illusion for fans in place.

Also this part of interview is funny: "We didn’t mention everything in our last HoC because we wanted to be sure to be able to deliver what we aimed for, now when we see the results we will share more information in general." woah, looks like he finally started to learn. Weird interview thou, I guess Henrik made all questions himself to be able to make up more excuses.

50 hours.. perhaps nows the time to give mortal online a go.

Hell why not.. 14 day trial, looks good enough to me.. Heard nothing but negativity about this game, but perhaps they finally got their act together, I'll find out after patching :p

I always hoped Mortal Online would make it out of the gutter.. Please let this be that day >.>

Haven't played since the open beta, so my expectations are extremely low.. Perhaps thats a good thing.

I'm not sure where you get that idea.  It's more a way of getting people to advertise the game to all the people they are friends with on face book. It's a pretty good means of doing targeted marketing regardless of the success of last months free trials (or lack thereof).

Its the natural continuation of the "viral marketing" aka "let volunteers do the work for us so we save money" that SV has been employing since... well, forever.

I'm curious if "Black Opal" the new Community Manager who posted this is now a paid employee of Starvault or a volunteer CM.

    There's 3 possible scenarios:

    1. Maerlyn just had his name changed to Black Opal, similar how CM St.Judas got "fired" but it turned out he was moved to Lead GM Pompeii.

    2. Maerlyn got fired, and they promoted one of the senior volunteers Kootenay aka Landor or Talwin aka Sindas to take that role on as CM volunteers.

    3. They hired someone new, but that makes little sense if they fired him to cut costs.

The funny part is that nearly all of these updates and content expansions are things that should have been in the game from launch.  They JUST got their servers to stay up for longer than two days?  You know, I was a supporter of SV... but they really dropped the ball.  These companies really aren't doing sandbox fans any justice.  No wonder all the kids point and laugh at us.  I just wish some developers would come along that actually want to do it right, and no alienate everyone but the hardcore PK'ers in the process.

..For real? Not that I doubt it to much after all the stuff they done, but what makes you say that?

This is not an expansion. Hell these should just be normal core features. This is just MO trying to get people to re-sub to a game that is currently failing. Nothing has changed other than adding more complex features that is more irritating than fun.

I personally am excited about "Dawn".

Arguing over whether it can be called an expansion or a patch seems pretty pointless when it's free.

If you think these are"normal core features" you really should reread the plans http://www.mortalonline.com/expansions. Personally I can't think of any game that has genetic variability and breeding in mounts, much less as a "core feature".

Of course it's an effort to get people to re-subscribe (or subscribe for the first time). Perhaps you missed the part where the facebook page links to a 14 day free trial. http://www.facebook.com/mortalonline?sk=app_168781766504269

P.S. From your post I take it that you don't subscribe. How do you know how irritating /fun any features are,

Well I mentioned it as part of the 3 possible scenarios I see, based on how Starvault has dealt with these things in the past.

I think he meant that he wasn't aware that they mislead everyone and "fired" St. Judas but just renamed him as GM Pompeii.  I have to admit that I wasn't aware of that either, but if that's true it speaks volumes about their integrity.
